The CAPE BRETON GENEALOGY & HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION is pleased to announce that CBGHA member, Wayne Macvicar, will be the speaker at our next meeting, 5 Nov 2008, 7:00 PM at the Lyceum, George St, Sydney, NS. Mr Macvicar is the author of the Obituaries From The Sydney Post-Record, 1933 -1956, in four volumes. These books are a great resource for anyone doing Cape Breton family research. Mr Macvicar's new book "Vital Statistics From Cape Breton Newspapers 1901-1912" provides access to records from a time period that is often difficult to research. We applaud Mr. Macvicar's research and look forward to the next two volumes to follow at a later date. A first release on the new publication from Wayne Macvicar is as follows - The first volume in a new 3 volume series of "Vital Statistics from Cape Breton Newspapers" has been published. Volume 1 covers the period 1901-1912. Subsequent volumes to be published will cover 1913-1922 and 1923-1932. These publications will fill the gap between a series of publications covering the nineteenth century by Mildred Howard and my series of Obituaries from the Sydney Post-Record covering the years 1933-1956. The three volumes in the series include extracts of obituaries/deaths, marriages and births found in the various surviving newspapers that were published on Cape Breton Island during that time period. The publications include Sydney Daily Post, Sydney Record, Glace Bay Gazette, North Sydney Herald, Richmond County Record, Bras d'Or Gazette, Sydney Mines Star, Inverness News, Hawkesbury Bulletin and others. Due to the number of entries it has been divided into three volumes. Each death entry includes the following information: surname, given names, date of death, place of death, date and place of burial (when known), limited biographical information to assist in identification of the individual, and the dates and pages of the newspapers in which it appeared. A maiden name cross-reference was also prepared and incorporated into the main body of the index to assist the researcher in finding married female lines. Each marriage entry includes bride's name, groom's name, date and place of marriage, parents' names (if given), officiating minister (if given), some brief biographical information and the dates and pages of the newspapers in which it appeared as well as separate bride and groom surname indexes. Each birth entry includes family name, date of birth (if given), parents' names, sex (child's name was not usually provided) and the dates and pages of the newspapers in which it appeared. Volume 1, 1901-1912, is 423 pages and contains over 5500 deaths, 2700 marriages and 1000 births. Volume 1 sells for $30.00, or $40.00 (CDN or US) by mail, postage included. Please note: A cheque or money order is required in advance prior to shipping.
