Cape Breton Deaths November 05, 2008 Wednesday Henry George Victor Hunt 72, Calabash Road, Southside Boularderie - It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of Henry G.V. (Hank) Hunt, devoted husband, father and grandfather, on Nov. 3, 2008, at the Northside General Hospital, after a lengthy battle with pulmonary fibrosis. Born on Jan. 30, 1936, in London, Ont., he was the son of the late William John and Pansy (Patricia) Octavia (Roberts) Hunt. He was a member of St. Joachim parish, Southside Boularderie. Henry was a veteran of the Canadian Air Force serving in Canada and Germany. He was also a member of the CNR Police. He moved to Cape Breton in 1963, working as a dairy farmer and forestry contractor until his retirement. He is survived by his devoted, loving wife and best friend of 51 years, Mary Jane (Harrison) Hunt; his three children, Debbie (Llowan) Walsh, Bras d'Or, Vicki (Donnie) MacDermid, Big Bras d'Or, and Gordon (Bonnie Patterson), Southside Boularderie; six grandchildren, Jaclyn and Curt Walsh, Erica, Angela, Lindsey and Malcolm MacDermid. He is also survived by his sisters, Janet (Wayne) Warren, Ft. McMurray, Alta., and Marguerite Battenburg, Toronto, Ont.; and many nieces and nephews. There will be no visitation by request of the family. Cremation has taken place. A funeral mass to celebrate Henry's life will be held Saturday, Nov. 8 at 11 a.m. in St. Joachim Church, Southside Boularderie, with Fr. Peter MacLeod officiating. A reception will follow in the Southside Boularderie fire hall. In lieu of flowers, donations in Henry's memory may be made to lung association, or to a charity of one's choice. Online condolences may be sent to the family at jmjobesfuneralhome@ns.aliantzinc.ca. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Albert Abbott 84, Sydney - Albert Fraser Abbott of Taylor Street, Sydney, passed away Monday Nov. 3, 2008, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Born in Bonavista, N.L., he was the son of the late Andrew and Isabella (Keel) Abbott. Albert was a former elder of Trinity United Church, Whitney Pier, and a former member of the Odd Fellows Lodge, Sydney. In 1984, he retired from Sydney Steel where he worked in the No. 3 boiler house. Surviving are his wife, Blanche (Etsell); daughter, April (Bob) Moore, Port Hastings; sister, Dorothy Russell, Bonavista; and grandchildren, Kyle and Jordan. Albert was predeceased by his brothers, Ray, Sidney and John. Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Thursday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held in Trinity United Church, Friday, 2 p.m., with Rev. Jackie MacDonald officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens. Following the service a reception will be held in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice. Condolences may be sent to the family at sydneymemorialchapel@ns.sympatico.ca. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ John Graham MacInnes 61, River Bennett - John Graham MacInnes, 61, of River Bennett, Victoria County, died Monday, Nov. 3, 2008, at home in River Bennett. Born in Breton Cove, June 19, 1947, he was the son of the late Johnny and Mary (Smith) MacInnes. John Graham began his teaching career at what is now Baddeck Academy in 1969. His career as a teacher spanned 34 years including terms as executive director of the Learning Centre in Sydney Mines and as an elementary school teacher at the North Shore Consolidated Elementary School in his local community. First elected to Victoria County municipal council in October 1985, John Graham was acclaimed in every subsequent campaign thereafter for the next 23 years. During this period, he served as deputy warden in 1994, between 2002 and 2004 and again from 2006 to 2008. He was elected warden of Victoria County in 1997 and held that position until 2000. John was very active in his community serving as clerk of session at St. Ann's Bay United Church; as a member of the North Shore and District Volunteer Fire Department and as an early member of the amateur drama troupe, the St. Ann's Bay Players. In recognition of his community service, John was awarded the Queen's Jubilee Medal in 2002. In addition to his community activities, John Graham was an avid gardener and hobby farmer, a lifelong fan of his beloved Montreal Canadiens and an active member of the Nova Scotia Liberal Party. As an educator at the elementary, junior and senior levels for decades and as a municipal councillor and community volunteer, John Graham, as he was affectionately known, touched a great many people in Victoria County. He will be sorely missed by his former students, constituents, family, friends, colleagues and his pets, Simba, Lizzie and Sandy. He is survived by his wife, the former Joan MacLeod and sons, Christopher Daniel, River Bennett, and John Kenneth (Tianna), Ottawa; brothers, Lloyd (Heather), Breton Cove, Merrill (Minerva), Breton Cove; sisters, Cathy (Ulrich Nikolai), Breton Cove, and Annmarie MacInnes (Sydney Hughes), Halifax. In addition to his immediate family, John Graham is survived by nieces, Megan MacInnes, Englishtown, Erika Nikolai, Toronto, Kate Nikolai, Tokyo, Amy MacInnes, North River, and Jenessa MacInnis, Fort McMurray. He is also survived by nephew, Lloyd Michael MacInnes, Little River; and grandniece, Lila Rose Donovan Nikolai, Toronto. The remains are resting at St. Ann's Bay United Church with visitation from 2-5 p.m. and again from 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6. The funeral will be held at St. Ann's Bay United Church, Friday, Nov. 7 at 2 p.m. with Dianne Kempt, DLM officiating. Burial will be in Pinehill Cemetery, River Bennett. Family flowers only by request. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the North Shore and District Volunteer Fire Department - First Responders Unit. Arrangements are under the direction of MacAskill Funeral Home, Baddeck. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Cecilia Currie Shaw 82, Sydney - It is with great regret that we, the family announce the passing of Cecilia Shaw on Monday, Nov. 3, 2008, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, after complications due to meningitis. Born in Paisley, Scotland, she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Anne (Currie) Barr. Cecilia has left behind to mourn are her loving husband, John Anthony; sons, David Anthony (Jocelyn), Kenneth John (Cheryl); daughter, Karen Cecilia (Joe) Schnitker; her wonderful grandchildren, Madeleine, Jenna and Bradley as well as many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Anne and Andrew, she was predeceased by her siblings, Ruby, Janet, Dan, Alma, Mary, John, Betty and Anne. She will always be loved and missed by her family and friends. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will take place Thursday, Nov. 6 at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney, 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Friday, Nov. 7 at the funeral home chapel. The funeral mass officiated by Rev. Paul MacNeil is Friday morning at 11 a.m. in the Parish of St. Leonard, Mt. Carmel Church followed by interment in the parish cemetery. All are welcome to join the family at the Carmel Centre for a reception. Condolences to the family can be expressed at www.vjmcgillivray.ca. The Sisters will be holding a prayer service Thursday night at 6:15 p.m. in the funeral home.
