Cape Breton Deaths November 06, 2008 Thursday Douglas Wilson 90, Glace Bay - It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of Douglas Wilson, 90, on Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2008, at the Glace Bay General Hospital, after a lengthy battle with cancer. Dougie was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Born in Dominion, June 1, 1918, he was the son of the late William George and Ethel (Coffin) Wilson. Doug grew up in Dominion and worked for many years in the automobile industry at Hyland Motors, Bay Motors and Bay Chev. He was a member of St. Mary's Anglican Church, Glace Bay and also a veteran of the Second World War, serving overseas from March 1942 to January 1946. Doug served in the liberation of Holland and the Battle of the Bulge and was also a member of the RCL, Branch No. 3, Glace Bay. He loved spending time in Florida and at his summer home of 50 years in Hillside, Mira. Other hobbies included fishing, hunting and going to watch his favourite hockey team, the Screaming Eagles. Doug is survived by his best friend and wife of 62 years, the former Margaret Lyons; sons, Robert (Rhonda) and Donald (Karen). He is survived by one sister, Polly Wynn; five grandchildren, Robin (Chris) Barrett, Beth (Darrell) MacMullin, Natasha (Ernie) Dalton, Dustin and Tatum Wilson and five great-grandchildren, Emma and Zackary Barrett, Duncan MacMullin, Lara and Kael Dalton. Besides his parents, Doug was predeceased by his brothers, George and Bob, sisters, Rhoda, Clara, Vivian and Lois. Visitation will take place Friday, Nov. 7 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral service officiated by Rev. Vernon Reid is Saturday morning at 11:30 a.m. in St. Mary's Anglican Church, Glace Bay. Interment to follow in Greenwood Cemetery. All are invited to join the family for a reception in the parish hall. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Dougie may be made to Cape Breton Palliative Care or the Canadian Cancer Society. Members of the RCL Branch No. 3, Glace Bay, will hold an honour guard at the entrance of the church to greet the funeral procession. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Oscar Murphy 1925-2008 Dominion/Glace Bay - It is with the saddest of hearts that we, the family of Oscar Murphy announce the passing of a beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather.Oscar passed away Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2008. Dad served during the Second World War with the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1943 and 1944, treasuring the time he spent with his fellow Legion Comrades. He was employed for 43 years as a coal miner in 20 and 26 collieries. Always quick with a joke and a happy, but mischievous, smile Dad will be truly missed by all who knew him. Dad is survived by his loving children, Judy (Billy Doyle), Glace Bay, Helen (Alan Brown), Dominion, with whom he lived, Brenda (Wayne Dunlop), Thamesford, Ont., David (Gaetane), Abbotsford, B.C., Sherrill, at home, Michael (Anita), Mineville, N.S., Shelly (Shawn Sheppard), Marion Bridge, Trevor (Charmaigne), Bracebridge, Ont.; brother, Rudy Power, Burlington, Ont.; 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Our father was predeceased by his wife, Elaine (nee: Minto), parents, Jimmy and Jessie Murphy (nee: MacKinnon), brothers, Harry Murphy, Sid Power, Alonzo Murphy (infant) and fiancée, Anne Kosnick. Mary passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2008, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex. Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late John and Annie (Brown) Howley. Mary was a member of St. Anne's Church, Glace Bay. She enjoyed bowling and playing cards. Mary had a special place in her heart for her two poodles. She will be sadly missed by her sisters, Irene (Earl) Sampson, Glace Bay, Millie Young, Glace Bay, Clare Patterson, Oakville, Ont., and Gloria (Ron) Piper, Kamloops, B.C. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Roy, sons, Grant Allan and Roy Blaise 'Rockie' and brothers, Dan and Gerard. Born in St. Margaret's Village, he was the son of Suzanne (MacNeil) MacDonald and the late Ronald Martin MacDonald. He spent the last number of years in Ontario, where he worked as a labourer. Calvin is survived by his wife and best friend, Kimberley Hill; their daughter, Hannah Jean, who was the "apple of his eye"; his mother, Suzanne; sisters, Goretti, Ottawa, Lois (Shane) MacNeil, St. Margaret's Village; brothers, William (Grace) Codrington, Charles (Sheila), Halifax, Leonard (Lisa) and Reg, both of St. Margaret's Village. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his father, he was predeceased by his infant sister, Mary. Visitation for Calvin MacDonald will be held on Friday, Nov. 7, 2008, in St. Margaret's Parish Centre, from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. A funeral mass to celebrate his life will take place Saturday at 11 a.m. in St. Margaret's of Scotland Church, St. Margaret's Village, with Fr. Born in Bangor, Me., he was the son of James Kerwin Gallagher and the late Guida Mae (Toney) Gallagher. He was a member of Saint Anthony Daniel parish. Christopher worked and lived for many years in Boston, Mass. He then resided in Toronto, Ont., prior to moving to Sydney to be close to his sisters and brothers. He is survived by his three sisters, Terry Lynn (David) Marshall, Membertou, Annmarie (Donnie) Gallagher, Benson, Ariz., Linda (Norman) St. Pierre, Auburn, Me. He is also survived by his brothers, Nelson, Phillip, Wayne and Anthony Morris, all of Eskasoni, Roger Morris, San Antonio, Tex., John Gallagher, Saco, Me., Michael Gallagher, Houlton, Me. In addition to his immediate family, Chris is survived by his nephews, Christien, James, Julian, Steven, Tarrin, Brendan and nieces, Andrea, Whitney, Tiffany, Jillian, Zara and Brandi. He was a son of Mrs. and Mr. Robert Turnbull, New Victoria. Robert donated his body to science. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ John Graham MacInnes 61, River Bennett - John Graham MacInnes, 61, of River Bennett, Victoria County, died Monday, Nov. 3, 2008, at home in River Bennett. Born in Breton Cove, June 19, 1947, he was the son of the late Johnny and Mary (Smith) MacInnes. John Graham began his teaching career at what is now Baddeck Academy in 1969. His career as a teacher spanned 34 years including terms as executive director of the Learning Centre in Sydney Mines and as an elementary school teacher at the North Shore Consolidated Elementary School in his local community. First elected to Victoria County municipal council in October 1985, John Graham was acclaimed in every subsequent campaign thereafter for the next 23 years. During this period, he served as deputy warden in 1994, between 2002 and 2004 and again from 2006 to 2008. He was elected warden of Victoria County in 1997 and held that position until 2000. John was very active in his community serving as clerk of session at St. Ann's Bay United Church; as a member of the North Shore and District Volunteer Fire Department and as an early member of the amateur drama troupe, the St. Ann's Bay Players. In recognition of his community service, John was awarded the Queen's Jubilee Medal in 2002. In addition to his community activities, John Graham was an avid gardener and hobby farmer, a lifelong fan of his beloved Montreal Canadiens and an active member of the Nova Scotia Liberal Party. As an educator at the elementary, junior and senior levels for decades and as a municipal councillor and community volunteer, John Graham, as he was affectionately known, touched a great many people in Victoria County. He will be sorely missed by his former students, constituents, family, friends, colleagues and his pets, Simba, Lizzie and Sandy. He is survived by his wife, the former Joan MacLeod and sons, Christopher Daniel, River Bennett, and John Kenneth (Tianna), Ottawa; brothers, Lloyd (Heather), Breton Cove, Merrill (Minerva), Breton Cove; sisters, Cathy (Ulrich Nikolai), Breton Cove, and Annmarie MacInnes (Sydney Hughes), Halifax. In addition to his immediate family, John Graham is survived by nieces, Megan MacInnes, Englishtown, Erika Nikolai, Toronto, Kate Nikolai, Tokyo, Amy MacInnes, North River, and Jenessa MacInnis, Fort McMurray. He is also survived by nephew, Lloyd Michael MacInnes, Little River; and grandniece, Lila Rose Donovan Nikolai, Toronto. The remains are resting at St. Ann's Bay United Church with visitation Wednesday from 2-5 p.m. and again from 7-9 p.m. today (Thursday). The funeral will be held at St. Ann's Bay United Church, Friday, Nov. 7 at 2 p.m. with Dianne Kempt, DLM officiating. Burial will be in Pinehill Cemetery, River Bennett. Born in Prince Edward Island, he was the son of Joe and Mary Van Schaick, Barrie, Ont. Casey graduated from Memorial High School, Sydney Mines, and NSCC in Springhill. He was presently employed by Buffets Office Supplies in North Sydney for the past 10 years. He was also an active member of the Big Bras d'Or Volunteer Fire Department. He will be greatly missed by his loving wife, Joan; his amazing daughters, Sharon (Chris), Fredericton, and Stacey (Nicholas), Sydney Mines; and his granddaughter, Sarah Marie. Born in Wagmatcook, he was a son of the late Matthew John and Mary Jane (Cremo) Mattie. He was a member of Queen of the World parish, Wagmatcook. Levi was devoted to St. Ann du Beaupré in Quebec. His favourite pastime was fishing and going to bingo. Levi loved his pets, Tooney and Valatino. He is survived by son, Frederick Isadore; brothers, Mathew Francis, Eskasoni, Lawrence Cremo, Boston; sisters, Susie Bernard, Jane Simon and Katherine Isadore. He will be missed by caregivers and friends, Allan John and Walter Isadore. He was predeceased by his adoptive parents, Mary Ellen Simon and Andrew Mattie Simon, daughter, Brenda Googoo, sisters, Mary Catherine Cremo, Ida Bernard, Mary Belle Isadore, brothers, John Simon and Michael Pierro. The body is resting at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Isadore, 22 Katie's Lane, Wagmatcook, with visiting hours Thursday after 4 p.m. and all day Friday. Born in Inverness, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Matilda (Gillis) Getto. She was a member of the Parish of St. Leonard, St. Agnes Church, New Waterford. She is survived by her six sons, Donnie (Nettie), Broad Cove, Gregory, Sydney, Wendell (Geri), Dwight (Jane), Zachary (Debbie), John (Pam), all in Massachucetts; one daughter, Mugsy (Chuck) Schima, Massachusetts; grandchildren, Kevin, Darryl, Heather, Hermine, Mandy, Daniel, Anna Rose, Michael, Natalie; great-grandchildren, Lily, Paige, Liam, Rhiannon and Jeremy. She is also survived by sisters, Matilda Blouin, Waterville, Sarah Wellner, Fredericton, Hermine Getto and Sylvia Medjuck, both of New Waterford; brother, Carl (Agatha), New Waterford; numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Donald, sisters, Margaret Thurbide, Rose Habicht, Leonie Hadley and Catherine Marchesin. There will be no visitation.
