Cape Breton Deaths November 04, 2008 Tuesday Agnes Phyllis McGean, RN 69, Sydney Mines - With broken hearts and deepest sadness, we, the family regret to announce the passing of our beloved sister, aunt and friend, Agnes Phyllis McGean, on Sunday, Nov. 2, 2008, at the Northside General Hospital, surrounded by her loving sisters, nieces and friends, after a long, courageous battle with cancer. Born in Sydney Mines, she was the loving daughter of the late George and Rosella (Matthews) McGean. Phyllis was a devout member of Immaculate Conception parish, where she served as cross bearer and eucharistic minister. She was a member of the parish CWL. She also belonged to the St. Elizabeth Alumni and the Retired Nurses Association. Phyllis graduated from St. Elizabeth Hospital in 1960. The following four years she spent working in Ontario. She worked at Hotel Dieu, St. Catharines, St. Joseph's Hospital, London, and Kingston General Hospital, Kingston. Following this, she returned to St. Elizabeth's where she became the inhalation therapist and IV therapist. She finished her nursing career at Harbour View Hospital, from where she retired in 1994. Phyllis loved to travel, and had many enjoyable trips, from St. Pierre, Miquelon, to Hawaii, Western Canada, Europe, The British Isles, Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda and many times to Florida, from where she also took Caribbean cruises. Phyllis also enjoyed dancing, movies, playing cards and visiting with family and friends. Phyllis is survived by her sisters, Glenda (Allan) Graves, Kentville, N.S., Georgina (Roy) Graves, New Minas, N.S., and Mary Elizabeth (Betty) (David) Smith, Millville, N.S. She is also survived by nieces and nephews, George (Shelley), Roseann (Chris), Roy (Marci), Bernie (Carla), Sheldon (Carol), Jeff (Tanya), Tracey (Shawn), Kim (Jon), and their children, Phyllis's great nieces and nephews. Also surviving is her extended family, Dr. William and Carolyn Snow, and their children, and her special friend, Eleanor Strickland. Besides her parents, Phyllis was predeceased by her brother, Sheldon and loving companion, William Snow. Visitation for Phyllis McGean will be held in the J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines, today (Tuesday, Nov. 4) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral mass celebrate her life will take place Wednesday, at 10 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, Convent Street, Sydney Mines, with Fr. Hughie MacNeil officiating. A reception will follow the mass in St. Pius X parish hall. He passed away suddenly at his home in North Sydney on Saturday, Nov. 1, 2008. Born Jan. 28, 1962, in New Waterford, he was the son of Anna (MacDougall) MacLean and the late Raymond Myles MacLean. David leaves behind the love of his life and best friend, Ann Fifoot. David was also a beloved father to his children, Shana and Kurtis MacLean, Jana (Drew LeClaire) and Josh Fifoot and his two grandsons, Jaxon and Rylan. Countless lives have been touched by his unforgettable personality. He was always there for his brothers and sisters, Billy MacLean, Ontario, Audrey (Dave) Boudreau, New Waterford, Carol Ann (Mike) Harrietha, Glace Bay, Anita (Wayne) Chaisson, Ontario, Arlene (Kevin) McNeil, Halifax, Robert MacLean (Chris), New Waterford, Lisa (Kenny) MacDonald, New Waterford, and Randy MacLean, Ontario. He will be loved and missed by all his nieces, nephews and grandnieces and nephews. David will also be missed by the Fifoot family. He was a former employee of Sobeys for many years. To say he was a handyman would be a tragic understatement. David was also an avid fisherman and enjoyed camping trips with his family and friends. He was a selfless person whose attitude was 'I can do that,' 'we can have that done in no time' or 'when can we start'. David has countless friends, who he was never too busy to take time to visit. A lot of David's time was spent with his best friends Buddy Fifoot and John and Janet Eyking. Our lives have been changed forever. David gave this world the greatest gift it could have asked for . . . himself. There will be no visitation. A funeral mass for David will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Church, North Sydney with Rev. Jim Attwood officiating. Cremation to follow. Interment in St. Agnes Cemetery, New Waterford. Born in New Waterford and a member of Mt. Carmel Church, she was the daughter of the late Joseph P. and Catherine (Boudreau) Chiasson. Sr. Pauline entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity, Halifax in 1959. She worked in the dietary department at the Mother House and the Infirmary Hospital, both in Halifax and also at the residential school in Shubenacadie. Sr. Pauline was later employed at Seaview Manor, Glace Bay, as a CNA. Her last area of employment was doing home-care work with City Home Makers, which serves the industrial Cape Breton area. Sr. Pauline will be remembered as a very cheerful person who had a great sense of humour. She was also known as a superb cook. She is survived by two brothers, Johnny, Florida, Thomas, Toronto; two sisters, Janette Lundrigan, Sydney, Yvette (Wilfred) Boudreau, Cheticamp; as well as several nieces and nephews. Sr. Pauline was predeceased by two brothers, James and Wilfred. The visitation and funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, New Waterford. Born in Harvey Bank, N.B., he was the son of the late Joseph and Mabel (Dixon) Bishop. A veteran of the Second World War, Donald served with the merchant marine and was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 12, Sydney. He was retired from the federal government where he was employed as a radio operator. Surviving are his daughters, Mary Ann (Marc) LeFave, Kingston, N.S., Josephine Marie (Keith) Ramsay, Fall River, and Donna Bishop, Sydney Mines; sons, John LeFave, Cape Breton, James LeFave, Ontario, and Stephen LeFave, Toronto; brothers, Lloyd and Cecil, British Columbia, and Clyde, New Brunswick; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Donald was predeceased by his wife, Edna (Morgan), daughter, Judith Green, sons, Joseph and Gerald LeFave, sister, Shirley Wheaton, brothers, Truman and Eldon. There will be no visitation. Born in New Victoria, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Cybil (Petrie) Murphy. She was a woman of strong faith who was an active member of the Parish of St. Leonard, St. Michael Church, River Ryan. One of her favourite pastimes was writing poetry. Douglas was born in Sydney, Dec. 8, 1927, son of the late Hubert and Ivy Jackson. Doug was an avid golfer, a member of Seaview Golf Club for over 50 years. He worked in construction and retired from the Heavy Water Plant in Glace Bay. Douglas is survived by his dear friend and companion, Mavis Morrison; twin sister, Bertha (Paul) Benedict, Sydney Forks, Ralph (Georgina) Jackson, Sydney, and Edward (Trudie) Jackson, Vancouver. Born in Grand River, she was the daughter of the late Murdock and Katherine (MacDougall) MacCuspic. Tena was a member of Bethel Presbyterian Church, Sydney. Surviving are her daughters, Agnes (Ted) Cogan and Norma (Cameron) MacKenzie, Antigonish; sons, Kenneth (Carol), Halifax, and Gordon (Christine), Antigonish; 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
