Cape Breton Deaths November 21, 2008 Friday Alexander Roderick Matheson 89, Sydney - It is with heavy hearts that we, the family announce the passing of Alexander 'Sandy' Matheson on Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2008, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Big Harbour, he was the son of the late Alexander and Mable (Parsons) Matheson. He was a member of the Merchant Marine during the Second World War and an active member of the Whitney Pier legion. Sandy was a member of Holy Redeemer parish, Whitney Pier. He was employed as a pipefitter for many years with several different companies until his retirement. Sandy was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He is survived by his three children, Brenda (David) Sawler, Sydney, Henry (Lauranne) Matheson, Ottawa, Sandy Matheson, Sydney; his precious grandchildren, Stephanie, Amy, Laura, Dylan and Nan, as well as several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Sandy was predeceased by his loving wife, Mary (Kennedy), sister, Josephine, brothers, Henry, Murdock, Robert, Murray, Jess, Donald, Alfred and Lloyd. Visitation will be held Friday, Nov. 21 at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney from 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will take place 10 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 22 at the funeral home chapel with Fr. Errol MacDonald officiating. He will be deeply missed by his wife and best friend of 56 years, Lenora 'Lee' (MacKinnon). Also left to mourn are his sons, Doug (Joan), Glace Bay, Glenn (Sandra), Lower Sackville, Brent (Helen), Bedford; his granddaughters, Kimberley (James) and Kristin (Jeff); his grandsons, Scott (Sarah) and Brett; also his great-granddaughters, Tara Lynn and Emma Rose. Also surviving are his sisters, Margaret (Bill) Shepherd, Mary (Fred) Woodill; sister-in-law Hazel, along with his many loving nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Charles and Della, he was predeceased by his stepmother, Gertie, brother, Bobby, brothers-in-law, Fred and John, his sisters, Ruth and Doris and daughter-in-law, Frances. He worked for many years with Hamilton's Biscuits and retired from civil service at the Provincial Building in 1991. He will always be remembered for his kind and gentle nature. His great joy in life was sports; a fan of the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles, watching his sons and grandchildren in their many sporting events, spending time with family and friends at the cottage in Bras d'Or. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service celebrating his life will be held Monday, Nov. 24 at St. Andrew's United Church, Bentinck Street, Sydney at 2 p.m. with Rev. Born in Holyrood, Nfld., he was the son of the late Francis and Sarah (Timmons) O'Rourke. Phil was retired, as a delivery driver for Imperial Oil for 32 years. He was a member of Holy Redeemer Church and a member of NNS Highlander, ICHB 27th Brigade. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, spending many summers at their trailer at Lake Ainslie. Phil is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Hattie (Richardson); daughters, Debra, Peggy (Jay) King, Susan (Mic) Hardy, Phyllis (Sheldon) Covey, all of South Bar, Colleen (Glenn) Tighe, Sydney, Maureen (Jim MacArthur), Howie Centre; sons, Philip (Leanne Matheson), B.C., Sean (Tracey), St. Stephen, N.B.; sisters, Bride (the late Charlie) Drohan, Sydney, Peg (the late Bud) Carrie, Oshawa; brother, Jack (Kathleen), Sydney; 17 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Born March 22, 1910, in Greenwich, Kings County, she was the eldest daughter of the late Archibald and Frances (Harvey) Hatchard. She was a member of the Canning United Baptist Church for over 50 years and a life-member of the Women's Missionary Society. She graduated from Normal College in Truro in 1931 with a teaching diploma. She upgraded her teaching licence in the early 1960s, attaining a Level 5 Certificate. Teaching and family were her life. She taught in various schools in Kings County for 29 years. Alice was predeceased by her husband, Clyde Randolph Porter, her son, Clyde Randall Porter, sisters, Eileen (Hatchard) Cohoon and Madeline Hatchard, brothers, George Hatchard, Clark Hatchard and Harry Hatchard, a son-in-law, Vaughn Beal. Born in Port Morien, he was the son of the late David and Bessie (MacIntosh). Barney was employed with H H Hopkin and served in the Armed Forces Signal Corps. Barney is survived by two daughters, Jackie (Greg), Glace Bay, and Ruby (Ernie), Donkin; three sons, Brian, Keith (Nadine), Dominion, and Steward (Tanya), Glace Bay; three sisters, Annie (Gordon) Butts, Margaret (John Brown) and Ruth Acker; three brothers, David (Doris), Earl (June) and Dougie (Brenda). Barney is also survived by 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Barney was predeceased by his wife, Jessie; son Wayne; sisters, Rita, June and Helen. Born on Sept. 16, 1949, in Inverness, Cape Breton, he was the son of the late Alex Jim and Agnes (MacQuarrie) MacEachern. Surviving are his sister, Cathy (Alvin) Croken, Howie Centre, N.S.; niece, Bethany (Kent) Johnstone; nephew, Aron, P.E.I.; uncles and cousins. Besides his parents, Hugh was predeceased by a brother, Hugh Daniel, in infancy. He was the grandson of Noel and Margaret Vanderlinden of Dominion. He was the son of Betty (nee Vanderlinden) and Tom Orgar of Surrey, B.C. He leaves behind his wife, Megan. Thomas is survived by his siblings, Joanne, Robert (Michelle), Colleen (Marcel) and Michael and four nieces and nephews. He has numerous uncles, aunts and cousins across Canada.
