Cape Breton Deaths July 14, 2008 Monday Virginia Joan Burke May 29, 1924 - July 12, 2008 - We, the family are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our loving mother Virginia Joan Burke on July 12, 2008, surrounded by her loving family. She was the daughter of the John and Mary (MacDonald) Gushue. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Left to mourn are her children, daughter, Virginia (Peter) Oickle and their children Andrew, Jonathan and Christianna, and great-grandson Adwyn. Son, Donald (Sandra Clarke) and their children Forrest and Storm. Daughter, Lori (James) Kennedy and their children, Rena (Shawn) Lahey, M.J. (Liane) Burke, Jim Kennedy, Jr., Tara Kennedy. Great-grandchildren, Noah and John Lahey, Ryan, Cally and Megan Burke, step great-grandchildren, Chelsea, Corrine, Kayla, Kelcey, Zackery and Brooke. Daughter, Deborah (Michael) Mahon and their children Patrick and Adrianne. Daughter, Patricia (Kevin) Gardiner. Son, Bernard Burke. Daughter, Jackie (Tim) Klein and their children Brooke and Bronwyn. Grandson Thomas Adam Burke. Granddaughter Lee Anne Penny and her son Thomas David Penny Gallop. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Susie Gushue, and sister-in-law, Clara (Les) Wilson, and several nieces and nephews. Virginia was predeceased by her husband, Patrick, and their children, Les, John and Tommy and their infant children, Mary and Terry. Visitation will be held at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, Tuesday, July 15 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral will take place Wednesday, July 16 at 11 a.m. at Stella Maris Church, Louisbourg, with Rev. Everett MacDow officiating. Interment at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Brickyard Road, Albert Bridge. Virginia had tremendous faith that carried her through her life and to the next. She believed 'We are all precious in the eyes of God.' He passed away July 10, 2008, at the age of 97. Family and friends look forward to sharing memories, stories, laughter, and tears at the service taking place at the United Protestant Church, Sydney River. Ted was born Nov. 4, 1910, in St. Anthony, N.L. to the late Charles and Patience (Brown) Noseworthy. In June 1935, he was united in marriage to Clara May Annesty, who passed away in 1973. They had two children, Ralph and Clifford. Ted later married Margaret (Andrews) Noseworthy who survives him. He is also mourned by his sister, Dora MacDonald, and his sister-in-law, Chris Noseworthy, and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and friends. Ted worked in he Sydney Steel Plant's nail mill for over 40 years. He was a very active member of the United Protestant Church and IOOF (the Independent Order of Odd Fellows) and well known for having painted his home in Howie Center Cape Breton tartan. Visitation will take place Monday, July 14, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, July, 15 in Sydney River United Protestant Church, with Rev. Dana Feltmate officiating. Burial to follow in Alfred E. Smith Cemetery. Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Joseph and Mary 'Mame' (MacCuish) Spencer. Raised on Scatarie Island until 1945, he then moved to Main-a-Dieu, where he was a fisherman until his retirement. Clem loved to dance and attended the seniors dances. In his younger years he enjoyed playing lob ball in his NHL golden sneakers. Clem is survived by his sister, Jane Harris; sister-in-law, Theresa Spencer, both of Main-a-Dieu; as well as numerous nieces and nephews and extended family who lovingly referred to him as 'Uncle Clem'. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Joseph Spencer, his brother-in-law, Jim Harris and his special uncle, Will. Visitation took place Sunday, July 13 at Immaculate Conception Church, Main-a-Dieu, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held 10 a.m. today (Monday) at Immaculate Conception Church, with Fr. Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late William and Agnes (McGean) Wall. Tish was a member of St. Anthony's Church and was an employee with Stream Canada, Glace Bay. Tish was a kind, gentle and loving person and will be greatly missed by her family and friends. She is survived by her husband, Frank; and son, Dennis. Also surviving are sisters, Elly (Frits) Bekker of the Netherlands, Delores, Marie (Wayne), Wilma (Wayne), Paula (Perry); brothers, Fred (Charmaine), Pat (Kathy), Gerald (Marlene) and Joey (Michelle), also a godchild, Natasha Gale, the entire German family from Montreal and many nieces and nephews, her dearest friends, Sharon and Lonnie Pye. Besides her parents she was predeceased by sisters, Lillian, Elaine and Elizabeth Ann, brother-in-law, Bill and nephew, Joey. Visitation will be in the V.J. "You left us peaceful memories, your love is still our guide and though we can not see you, we know you are always by our side" ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Margaret Jean MacEachern-Curran - It is with great sorrow that we announce the sudden death of a loving wife and mother, a wonderful daughter and sister, Margaret Jean MacEachern-Curran, age 45, at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, Ann Arbor, Michigan, July 7, 2008, of breast cancer. She will be deeply missed by her husband, Michael Curran; her four and a half year old son, Ryan, and her two stepchildren, Colleen and Sean. Her Mom and Dad and her three sisters are also profoundly saddened by her passing. Born and raised in Sydney, N.S., she was the oldest daughter of Harvey and Clare (Gillis) MacEachern. She attended St. Joseph's School and graduated from Sydney Academy in 1981. She attended Carleton University upon receiving the President's Scholarship Award and graduated with her bachelor of arts degree. After completing a bachelor of education degree at Queen's University, Kingston, Ont., Margaret Jean taught in the Ontario school system for 15 years. In her last few years in Ontario, Margaret Jean served as a school administrator in several schools in the Toronto Catholic School Board. Margaret Jean was always very active in her community serving on church boards and school co-op programs for her son, Ryan. Margaret Jean is survived by a large and loving family of Gillises, MacEacherns and Currans. She will always be remembered by her three sisters, Dr. Shauna (Larry Babineau), Ottawa, Elizabeth RN (Neil Ferguson), Halifax and Lora LLB (Chris Daly), Halifax. Margaret Jean loved her nephews and nieces including Maria and Nolan Babineau, Jonathan and Hillary Ferguson as well as Alexandra and twins, Dan and Bridget Daly. The family will have a memorial mass to celebrate Margaret Jean's life at St. Joseph's Church, Sydney on Friday, July 18 at 11 a.m. Donations in memory of Margaret Jean may be made to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. Margaret Jean will be remembered for her deep sense of family, her terrific zest for living life to the fullest, her sociable and friendly personality, her love of learning and adventuresome spirit, her appreciation of her Scottish heritage and her Cape Breton roots, her flair for debating current issues, especially politics. Above all, she will be remembered for her deep love for her young son, Ryan, who was never far from her side. She would always want him to know how difficult it was for her to part from him. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ William Joseph MacKenzie 80, Red Islands - William Joseph MacKenzie, 80, Red Islands, Richmond County, C.B., died July 11, 2008, close to his home on the family farm where he was born and raised. Bill spent many years away in Winnipeg working and raising his children, but his heart was always in Red Islands. When retirement time came he and Lorna moved back to make a home on their hill overlooking the Bras d'Or Lakes. A son of Alexander Stephen 'Alex S' and Sarah Emily 'Sadie' (MacInnis) MacKenzie, he is survived by his wife, Lorna (Emery); sons, Boyd (Jo-Anne), David (Cindy); and daughter Beth-Ann (Rob) McFaddin; the mother of his sons, Alice (Campbell); and grandchildren, Tyler, Sara, Kyle, Ashton and Kiana, all of Winnipeg. He was predeceased by brothers Peter, Lawrence, Leonard and Philip, and sister Marguerite. He will be mourned by his brothers, Stephen (Annabelle) and George; sisters, Marie Morrison, Sister Ann (CSM), Doris Brown, Frances (Byron Howat); sister-in-law, Catherine (Lawrence); as well as many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly. He will be greatly missed by many friends and neighbours at Red Islands and surrounding area. Heartfelt thanks are extended to Doctors Eric Downing (deceased), J. Collins and M. MacKenzie, and the staff at Strait Richmond Hospital for their compassion, care and kindness during Bill's illness. Cremation has taken place. No visitation by request.
