Cape Breton Deaths July 26, 2008 Saturday Bertha Alexander 97, Sydney - It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Bertha Alexander, age 97, of Harbourstone Enhanced Care Facility on Thursday, July 24, 2008. Born in North Sydney, N.S., on Nov. 8, 1910, she was the daughter of the late Edgar and Violet (Janes) Parsons. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Bertha was a member of St. Theresa parish, Club 55 and Club 55 Rhythm Band, Sydney Pensioners Club and the Breton Quilters. She was an avid card player and especially liked to play tarabish. She spent many hours knitting, crocheting and sewing for her family. Bertha is survived by two daughters, Phyllis (the late Jack MacIntyre), Brampton, Ont., and Carol (Graeme) MacDonald, Howie Centre. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Bertha was predeceased by her husband, Edward in 1988, daughters, Evelyn Murray, Marjorie Black, son, Vincent, a daughter, Mary Josephine, in infancy, brothers, Charles and Joe Parsons, sister, Peg Knowles; grandson, Allan MacIntyre and granddaughter, Frances Black. Visitation for the late Mrs. Alexander will take place on Sunday, July 27 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. at St. Theresa Church with Rev. Jim Oliver officiating. Interment will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks. We wish to thank the devoted staff at Harbourstone Enhanced Care and especially Fisherman's Cove for their kindness to our mother. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Charles (Teddy) Edward Winter Whitney Pier - It is with great sadness that we, the family announce the passing of Teddy Winter, Thursday, July 24, 2008, at his home in Whitney Pier. Born in Detroit, Mich., June 5, 1937, he was the son of the late Charles E. and Mary L. (McGoey) Winter. Teddy will be fondly remembered by his friends and colleagues in the entertainment industry and Showmen's League which he was apart of for over 50 years. During his earlier years he was in the Air Force, stationed in Petawawa, Ont., and Beaverbank, N.S. Teddy was an avid poker player and always had a good joke to share with others. For those who knew Teddy, he will be remembered for his very generous and thoughtful ways. Overall, Teddy will be looked upon as being Genuine. Surviving is his loving partner, Noel Daley; six daughters, Darlene, Donna, Shirley, Tracey, Tammy and Rhonda; seven sons, Ronnie, Gary, Brian, Jimmy, David, Phillip and Michael. He is also survived by 21 grandchildren and his beloved dog, Leon. Besides his parents, Teddy was predeceased by his wife, Gloria Jean Winter, after 25 years of marriage. Visitation will take place Monday, July 28 at the Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. with entrance on Church Street, Whitney Pier, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service to celebrate Teddy's life will be held Tuesday, July 29 at 11 a.m. at Pier Community Funeral Home in the All Faith Chapel, with Maj. Dan Roode officiating. Reception to follow in the funeral home reception area and everyone is welcomed. Interment will take place at Oakridge Memorial Cemetery, Upper Sackville at a later date. Online condolences may be sent to info@pierfuneralhome.com Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Pier Community Funeral Home. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ MWO John Clarence Harrietha CD2 77, Bras d' Or 1931-2008 - With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Clarence at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on Thursday, July 24, 2008, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Sydney Mines and later moved to Bras d'Or with his family. He was the son of the late Joseph and Dora (LeBlanc) Harrietha. He was a member of St. Joseph Parish, Bras d'Or. Clarence worked at No. 1 Colliery in Sydney Mines prior to joining the Armed Forces in 1953. During his 28 years, he served in Petawawa, Korea, Debert, Gagetown, Germany, Winnipeg, Shiloh, Egypt, Ottawa, Halifax and HMCS Assiniboine. He retired as master warrant officer in 1981. Upon retirement, he worked as commissionaire at the Braemore Home, Sydney River. He was an active member of Branch 8, Royal Canadian Legion in Sydney Mines. Clarence had a true love of life, his family being first and foremost. He had many friends and acquaintances wherever he travelled. He was well known for his outside Christmas decorating and gardening. He had a true passion for nature, whether it was travelling, snowshoeing, feeding animals or going for walks. His hobbies included taking pictures, and scrapbooking. He was also a Toronto Maple Leaf and Blue Jays fan. Clarence is survived by his wife, Thelma (Tillie) White Harrietha; daughters, Thelma (Carmen) Solimine, Mississauga, Ont., and Linda (Jack) Benstead, Brandon, Man.; grandchildren, John (Wanda) McGuire, Tom (Yvonne) McGuire, Angela (Jason) Floyd and six great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Joe (Sharon) Harrietha and sisters, Carlotta (Gerry) Flowers, Rose (Eldon) Johnston and Violet (Ted) Jarvis. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Leonard Harrietha. Visitation for Clarence Harrietha will take place in J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines, Sunday, July 27, 2008, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A mass of Christian burial will be held Monday at 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph Church, Bras d'Or, with Fr. Peter MacLeod officiating. The burial will be in the parish cemetery. There will be a legion service at the gravesite. The family would ask that donations in Clarence's name be made to the Palliative Care at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Beloved husband of Joyce Harrietha (nee Day); loved father of Sherry (Richard), Perth, Australia, and Joe (Roxanne), Ottawa; loving grandfather of Mckaila, Lindsey and Madison; brother of Clarence, Adrian, Carlotta, Rosemarie and Violet (Babe); son of the late Joseph and Dora (nee LeBlanc) Harrietha. Predeceased by his infant brother, Joseph. Len will be sadly missed by all his nieces, nephews and friends. Jessie was born in Grand Mira, Cape Breton, on Nov. 19, 1917, the daughter of the late John R. and Mary (Gillis) MacLeod. She was raised with her brother Donald by her loving Uncle Jim and Aunt Maggie Gillis in Grand Mira. Jessie was predeceased by her husband, Archie Leo, daughters-in-law, Sheila MacEachern and Susan MacEachern, brother, Donald MacLeod, half-sister, Pauline Morrison, half-brothers, Hughie, Jimmy, Fraser and John MacLeod, stepmother, Susie (Powell) MacLeod. Left to rejoice in the memory of her loving life are daughters, Anna (Dave) Poirier, Mary (David) French; six sons, John (Paulette), Donnie, Archie (Marilyn), Jim, Len and Mike (Annette), all of Sydney. Jessie, affectionately known as Nanny, is also survived by her special grandchildren, Michelle Coleman (Paul), Karen O'Neil (Kelly), Deanna MacKinnon (Kevin), Janet MacDonald (Garrett), Laura MacEachern (Raymond MacLean), Tim MacEachern (Stephanie), David MacEachern, Michael and Renee Poirier, Leanna Carrigan (Michael) and Janine and Andrea French. Jessie was a lifelong member of Saint Theresa's parish, Sydney, and a long standing member of the CWL, a friend to its many loyal members. Always to be remembered as a kind, gentle, caring lady of great faith, with a warm smile and a quick wit. Her favourite times were spent when surrounded by her family. Jessie leaves many fond memories of her self-taught talents of sewing, knitting and crocheting. Many who visited her home were always treated to a great cup of tea and her delicious home baking. Dan worked for Golden Windows for 22 years in Kitchener, Ont. He played in various bands in Nova Scotia as well as in Ontario. Dan had a great zest for life and all who he came in contact with. Music was one of his greatest passions next to his family. Through his battle, Dan hung on for the arrival of his first granddaughter, Ada Danielle, born June 29, 2008. He was predeceased by parents, Mary and Michael MacNeil and brother, Michael (Mick) MacNeil. Dan will be sadly missed by his two daughters, April (Brendan) Glass and Leanne MacNeil (Jason); Linda MacNeil and granddaughter, Ada Danielle Glass. Dan will be lovingly missed by his sisters, Florence Chang, Glace Bay, and Charlene (Bill) Houlihan, Halifax; and many nieces and nephews. Daniel will be lovingly missed by his longtime companion, Kymme Sun, Burlington. There was a family service at Smith's Funeral Home in Burlington, Ont. Cremation followed and interment took place at Williamsburg Cemetery, Kitchener, Ont. If there was an Angel on Earth, Mom, it was you." ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Harold 'Hal' Spencer 60, Donkin - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Harold Harvey 'Hal' Spencer on Thursday, July 24, 2008, at the Glace Bay Hospital, after a courageous battle with cancer. Hal was born and lived most of his life in Donkin. He was well known in the music circles, playing in many bands around Cape Breton and it was said that he could make his guitar sing. Hal was employed in the construction industry and for a short while, worked in Calgary, Alta. He was predeceased by his parents, Aubrey and Dorothy (Caines) Spencer and brother, Gilbert Spencer. Hal is survived by his sons, Steven (Tara) Spencer, Halifax, and Bradley Spencer, Kingston, Ont.; sister, Patricia (Jack) Wheeliker, Glace Bay; brother, Aubrey (Chris) Spencer, New Brunswick, and Keith Spencer, Alberta; special aunt, Muriel McLellan; special cousins, Doug and Marg Howie and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel. A memorial service will be held at St. Luke's United Church at 2 p.m., Sunday, July 27. Family flowers only.
