Cape Breton Deaths July 09, 2008 Wednesday Maisie Dornadic 92, Sydney - Maisie Dornadic, 92, a resident of Harbourstone Enhanced Care, formerly, MacRae Avenue, Sydney River, passed away Tuesday, July 8, 2008, at Harbourstone. Born in Glace Bay, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Mary (MacLean) MacLean. In her earlier years, Maisie ran a tailoring/dressmaking shop located on Charlotte Street. She was a former member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 12, Sydney. Surviving are her 15 nieces and nephews and lifelong friend, Enid Johnstone, Sydney. Maisie was predeceased by her husband, Arsene 'Dick' Dornadic and stepbrother, Robert MacLean. Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Thursday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held in the chapel Friday, July 11 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Stephen Mills officiating. William Walters - William Walters passed away on Wednesday, June 25, 2008, at the Greater Niagara General Hospital. Predeceased by his first wife, Margaret. William is survived by his loving wife, Rita (Mac- Donald) Walters. Born in Sydney, N.S. on Dec. 29, 1921, William was employed for over 40 years at Sydney Steel. A veteran of the Second World War, William was raised with 13 brothers and sisters. Predeceased by his daughter, Leona, William is survived by his son, Jack W. Walters (Beverley), Toronto, and his daughter, Rose Leveille ( Jim). Beloved Papa of Lisa Marie and Aindrea Leveille, Dustin and Brandon Domalion. Willie will be lovingly remembered by all his family & many friends. Mamie Kathleen MacLennan - Mamie Kathleen MacLennan, RN, 91, passed away on July 6, 2008, in the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney. Born in Elemsdale, N.S., she was the daughter of the late Samuel Paley and Caroline (Isenor) Paley. She graduated from Nova Scotia and Victoria General Hospital in 1940 and became a RN in 1941. She nursed for many years at the Toronto General Hospital. She and her husband, 'MJ' resided in Toronto for 35 years, then moved to North River, Victoria County, N.S., in 1982. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Murdock J. MacLennan and many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was also predeceased by six sisters and two brothers. Visitation will be this evening (July 9, 2008) 7-9 p.m. at St. Ann's Bay United Church. Funeral service will be held at St. Ann's Bay United Church, Thursday, July 10 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Sharon Anne (McGuire) MacQueen 66, Sydney, N.S. - In 1990, Sharon met her common-law partner, Douglas Richey, who passed away in the summer of 2007. Joseph Andre MacDougall 60, Jamesville, N.S. - Joseph Andre MacDougall passed away on July 7, 2008, in Victoria County Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. Son of Helen (MacKinnon) MacDougall and the late Walter MacDougall. He was retired from the Department of Highways ferry service. Besides his mother, he is survived by three sisters, Mary Jane MacMillian (Greg), Big Pond, Angela, Antigonish, and Jo-Ann, Toronto; three brothers, Leo (Linda) and Dan, both of Halifax, and D.F. (Bernadette), Ottawa Brook; and several nieces and nephews. He was a member of St. Columba parish, Iona and Sacred Heart Mission, Mackinnon Harbour. His remains will be resting at St. Columba parish hall, Thursday, July 10 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. with Mass of Christian Burial, Friday, July 11 at 11 a.m. in St. Columba Parish Church. Ida Sarah Finney (nee Brown) Sydney Mines - On Tuesday, July 08, 2008, Ida Finney, wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, passed away at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Ida will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 50 years, John (Jack); their children, Bill (Belinda), Chilliwack, B.C., Derrick (Marcia), Cole Harbour, N.S., Trevor, Edmonton, Alta., Darryl (Brenda), Alder Point, N.S., and their three grandchildren, Jordan, Jessica and Brandon. She is also survived by her brother, Jim (Donna), Sydney Mines, N.S.; and sisters, Judy (Bud), Edmonton, Alta., and Glenda (Al), Glace Bay, N.S. Ida was predeceased by her loving parents, Bill and Mary (Pyke) Brown of Florence.Ida was very active in her church community throughout her entire lifetime. She was an avid bowler and square dancer, and after retiring from Nova Scotia Power in 1997, she focused her significant energies as a palliative care volunteer, through which she impacted the lives of many people. Sr. Irene Doyle - Sr. Irene Doyle, formerly Sr. Mary Anselm, 95, a Sister of St. Martha of Antigonish, died at Bethany, the motherhouse, on July 7, 2008, in the 76th year of her religious life. Born in Melford, Cape Breton County, N.S., she was the daughter of the late Daniel O'Connell and Catherine (Boyle) Doyle. Sr. Irene entered the Sisters of St. Martha on Sept. 8, 1930, pronounced her first vows on July 11, 1932 and made her perpetual commitment on Aug. 24, 1935. Also in 1935, she graduated from St. Francis Xavier University with a BSc in home economics and began her ministry with the extension department of St. F. X. Sister was a field worker in the extension department from 1935-39, 1940-44 and 1947-52. The years off from the extension department were used to attend Massachusetts School of Art and Design and to serve as Mistress of Postulants for the congregation. In 1952, Sr. Irene took part-time studies in the field of child welfare and social work. She began full-time study at Boston College in 1953, graduating in 1956 with a masters of science in social work. Until her election to serve as general councillor in the congregation in 1961, Sr. Irene worked at Family Counselling and Guidance Centre in Boston. She was a certified charter member in the following associations: Canadian Social Work Association of Nova Scotia and Canada, and in the U.S. National Association and the U.S. Academy of Certified Social Workers. Sister served as general councillor for the congregation for two terms, 1961-67 and 1967-73. During her second term as councillor, she served as vicar general of the congregation. Following a year of renewal, she returned to social work in 1975, ministering at Family Counselling and Guidance Centre in Boston until 1979. During some of her years of service as general councillor, Sr. Irene worked as the director of staff development for CSM Social Workers in the Antigonish Diocese. She also served as the local superior in four of the Martha residences where she lived. After retiring from social work, Sr. Irene served as director of our two retreat centres, Martha Centre in Lethbridge, Alta., and Bethany Centre in Antigonish. Sister was always interested and involved in keeping the history of the Sisters of St. Martha alive, documented and recorded. From 1990-2005, Sr. Irene served the congregation as oral historian. Sister moved into Bethany's extended care unit in June 2008, a few short weeks ago. In 1975, she received an Exemplary Service Award from the extension department and Coady International Institute of St. Francis Xavier University. In 1982, Sister was given an honorary degree of Doctor of Laws from St. Francis Xavier University. In 1997, Sr. Irene was inducted into the Hall of Thought at the same university. These awards were given for her qualities and accomplishments, her exemplary dedication and service to adult education with the extension department, in the field of social service, as well as for her contribution to the university and the church. Sr. Irene is survived by one sister, Romayne Waye of Port Hawkesbury. She was predeceased by five sisters, Ida Fougere, Ethel, Frances, Helene Gertrude, Sr. Jean, CSM, and Marjorie MacGillivray; and by one brother, Myles Daniel, who died in infancy. The remains will be resting at Bethany, beginning Thursday, July 10 at 1:15 p.m., where a Celebration of Vigil will be held on the same evening at 7:30 p.m. Liturgy of Christian Burial will take place on Friday, July 11 at 2 p.m. in the Bethany Chapel. Bernice MacIntyre Sydney - It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Bernice on Monday, July 7, 2008, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Corner Brook, N.L., June 16, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Clara Dwyer and Bernard O'Hearn. She was a loving, kind and gentle woman who inspired her family to choose goodness, faith and honesty in every aspect of their lives. Her understanding and dedication to family values coupled with a positive, caring attitude were key strengths that molded a family and created lasting memories. She loved life and found the greatest satisfaction in helping others. We will deeply miss her unconditional love and the 'motherly' knowing smile and her unique sense of humour. Bernice is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, Jerry; brother, Gerald O'Hearn, U.S.A.; daughters, Carol (Bud) Streeter, Fall River, Lynn (Kenny) Pitchuck, Petawawa; sons, Kent (Madeleine), Halifax, Mark (Norma), Lower Sackville, and Ted, Pemberton, B.C. Also surviving are eight grandchildren, three stepgrandchildren, five great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister, Patricia. Bernice was a past president and lifelong member of St. Anthony Daniel CWL; a founding member of St. Anthony Daniel parish council; a former volunteer with palliative care and an active member of a small and dedicated prayer group. Thomas Albert (Bert) Hanratty Age 67 - Thomas Albert (Bert) Hanratty, aged 67, died in Toronto on Saturday, July 5, 2008, at the Toronto Grace Health Centre. He was born April 16, 1941 in Sydney, N.S. to Thomas John and Mary Margaret (nee MacDonald) Hanratty. He attended Sydney Academy and Xavier Junior College in Sydney and graduated from St. Francis Xavier University in 1961. He married Mary Helen Burke in 1963 and they lived in New Brunswick from 1963 to 1994. A school teacher and principal for over 30 years, he was also very active in the New Brunswick Teachers Association, serving as its president from 1983-1985. Following Bert's retirement, he and Helen lived in Montreal from 1994-1996, after which they moved to Toronto. Bert is survived by his wife, Helen; four children, Liam (husband of Lisa), Kate, Siobhan and Niall (husband of Tina); two grandsons, Griffin and Sam; two sisters and five brothers. Christine Marie Whalen Sydney Mines - Christine Marie Whalen died peacefully with her family by her side on Monday, July 7, 2008, at Miners Memorial Manor in her 90th year. Christine had been a resident of the manor for the past seven years. Christine was born in Beaver Cove in 1918 and was the daughter of the late Joseph and Flora (MacNeil) MacMullin. Christine was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She will long be remembered by family and friends for her quiet demeanour. She was a longtime member of Immaculate Conception parish. She was active in the CWL and renowned for her baking skills. She was a seamstress and taught adult classes in that discipline. Surviving Christine is her son, Liam (Pamela), Halifax; daughters, Margaret (Alfred) LeJeune, Grantham, New Hampshire, and Kathleen (Chris) Parsons, Oakton, Va. She will be sadly missed by nine grandchildren, Tony, Danielle, Christine, Jennifer, Brenan, Jared, Kealan, Evan and Maggie and two great-grandchildren, Tanis and Titus. Also survived by brother, Michael Mac- Mullin; sisters, Johnanna MacKinnon, Theresa MacKinnon, all of Beaver Cove, and Josephine MacNeil, Halifax. Christine was predeceased by her husband,Tony in 2001, six children in infancy and daughter, Geraldine Whalen in 2002.
