Cape Breton Deaths July 29, 2008 Tuesday Joan MacDougall Sydney - It is with sadness, but with joy in a life wonderfully lived, that we announce the passing of Joan MacDougall, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, cousin and a friend. Joan passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Monday, July 28, 2008, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Whitney Pier, she was the daughter of the late John M. 'Dan C.' and Millie (Lappin) MacNeil. Joan attended Holy Redeemer Girls School, Whitney Pier, and went on to work for a time with the Royal Bank, Sydney. By far however, her greatest joy came from caring for her family with an endless supply of love and laughter. She was indeed a most precious wife, mother, sister and 'nana'. Over the years Joan lent her creativity and intelligence to oil painting, the game of bridge and many other interests. Her faith and strength were an inspiration to us all. She is survived by her husband, James 'Sham' MacDougall; her daughter, Joanne (Edmund) Harrison, Sydney; the lights of her life, grandchildren, Peter James and Sara-Beth Harrison; two sisters, Margie (Bud) Kozera, Sydney, Colleen ('Blick') Campbell, Sydney; three brothers, Dan C. (Valerie) MacNeil, Bill (Linda) MacNeil, John (Theresa) MacNeil, all of Sydney; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by aunt, Sadie (MacNeil) Fogarty, by Ethel (Timmons) MacNeil, also by her sisters-in-law, Helen (Stan) MacDougall and Peggy (Donnie) Antonello and, brothers-in-law, Gregory (Kay Marie) MacDougall, Angus MacDougall, Eddie (Rose) McNeil and Bill (Zelia) Goode. Visitation will be from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Wednesday, July 30. Funeral mass will be celebrated Thursday, July 31 at 2 p.m. in St. Joseph's Church with Revs. Gerald Dunphy and Norman MacPhee concelebrating. Emma was born in Sydney on April 4, 1921, to Mary and Isaac James Gillam and lived her early years on Forrest Street, Sydney. During the war years, she worked at a munitions factory in Toronto. She later moved back to Sydney and met and married her love, Bill. They lived and raised their family on Douglas Street. Emma worked in ladies wear at Crowell's Department Store until retirement. She was a parishioner of Christ Church and a former member of the ladies auxiliary and the Christ Church Bowling League. Emma was an avid card player enjoying a game of tarabish, 45's or bridge and was a member of the Cape Breton Bridge Club. She also enjoyed gardening, knitting, cats and dogs and taking care of others. Besides her parents, Emma was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, William 'Bill' and brothers, Stan, Fred and Bill. She is survived by her sons, David (Patti), Toronto, and Rodney (Madonna), Gardiner Mines; daughter, Linda (David), Kentville; and grandchildren, Darcie and Christine. Emma spent her last years at Victoria Haven Nursing Home in Glace Bay, where she always brought a smile to everyone's face. Visitation with Emma's family will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Thursday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will take place at Church of Christ the King, Friday, Aug. 1 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Sister passed away peacefully at home Sunday, July 27, 2008. Born and raised in Sydney Mines, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Aggie (Norman) Glogowski. Sister was a member of St. Pius X Church, Sydney Mines. She worked for a number of years with National Sea Products. Sister loved being with her friends, playing darts, cards or dancing. Sister is survived by her only daughter, Raylene (David) Jessome (daughter of Raymond Bailey); two shining stars, her grandchildren, David and Kelsie; her companion and best friend, David Winstanley; brothers, John and Frank (Rita) Glogowski; sisters, Mae Cousins, Jean Finney, Sheila Glogowski (Dannie), all of Sydney Mines, sister, Brenda (Harold Bailey), Fort McMurray; and several nieces and nephews. She will be dearly missed by her great neighbour and best friend, Mae Forrest. Sister was predeceased by a son in infancy, John Raymond. McKenna - 63, Saint John, N.B/Sydney Mines, N.S. Our Lord and Saviour called Frank home on July 27, 2008. Born Dec. 9, 1944, Frank was the eldest son of Frank and Mary (Collier) McKenna, Devoe, Forrest Street, Sydney Mines, N.S. He was predeceased by his dad, brother, Louis Adrian (infant) and sister, Ann Marie (Rolie) Randle. Frank is survived by his loving wife and best friend, Barbara (Green); daughter, Danielle; sons, Aaron and Andrew; mother, Mary (Walter) Devoe; sisters, Geraldine (George) Walker, Helen (Mike) Woroby; brothers, Michael (Sally), Blaise (Donna); step-brothers and sisters, Kevin, Blair, Gerald (Rita), Diane (Donnie), Michelle (Louie), and Patsy; special little ones, Baily and Brianne and several nieces and nephews. Frank will also be missed by many friends. Frank was class valedictorian for his Sydney Mines High School Grade XII graduating class. Frank joined the Royal Canadian Navy (ROTP) and graduated in 1965 from St. FX with a bachelor of science degree in mathematics. Frank was employed by NBTel in Saint John, N.B., from 1966 until his retirement in 2000. Frank's love of information technology (IT) then led him stateside to a rewarding seven-year IT consulting career. As a player, coach and administrator Frank was involved in baseball/softball for more than 40 years. He also enjoyed bowling, tennis, curling and hunting. Cremation has taken place. Henrietta passed away peacefully Monday, July 28, 2008, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex. Born in Margaree Forks, Inverness County, she was the daughter of the late Daniel T. and Lillian Mary (Arnold) Doyle. Henrietta was a member of St. Anthony's Church, Glace Bay. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. She loved to bake for her family. She enjoyed playing the piano and took great pride listening to her granddaughter play. Henrietta was also an avid bingo player. We love you! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Madeleine (Clarke) Duthie Baker - On July 27, 2008, Madeleine passed away at St. Michael's Hospital, Scarborough, Ont., after a courageous battle with cancer. She was the daughter of John P. Clarke and Gertrude (Hanrahan) Clarke, originally from 427 St. Peter's Rd., Sydney, N.S. Madeleine attended Constantine School and graduated from Holy Angels High School in 1948. Before moving to Ontario, she was employed with the Government of Canada, at UIC office in Sydney, N.S. During her early years in Ontario, she was a school counsellor at Cardinal Newman High School, in which she was loved and respected until her retirement. Born in Glace Bay, he was the eldest son of Jack and Frances (MacDonald) Bigley. Tom worked for many years as a paymaster starting at the Halifax Forum, then with Brown & Root at the heavy water plant in Glace Bay and Ontario. Returning home in 1970 because of his mother's ill health, he worked for Danny Morrison in Reserve Mines; as well as doing income tax returns for many of the residents of Valleyview. Tom was a member of St. Anne's Church, Glace Bay. Surviving are brothers, Jay (Marie) and Blaise (Eileen); sisters, Geraldine 'Deanie' (Alfie) Hardy and Audrey Cook; along with many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Josephine 'Joey' Conron and brother, Michael 'Mickey.'
