Cape Breton Deaths July 12, 2008 Saturday Vernon Robert Geddes 82, Florence - Vernon Robert Geddes, 82, of Florence, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 10, 2008, at the Northside General Hospital. Born in Florence, he was the son of the late Robert and Susan (Cave) Geddes. He was a member of Wilson United Church, Florence. Vernon was an avid sportsman, and a licensed guide. He was also an accomplished breeder of both racing pigeons and purebred beagles, holding multiple Maritime and Canadian records. A lover of harness racing, he was a member of the Nova Scotia Harness Racing Association, where his horses ran out of Sydney, Inverness and Truro raceway. He is survived by his wife, Mona (Shinners) Geddes, Florence; his daughter, Joanne (Jim) MacDonald, Ottawa; and his son, Lowell (Cathy) Geddes, Saint John, N.B. Also surviving are grandchildren, Jennifer and Robbie; his sisters, Ruby Walsh, Sydney Mines; and Marigold (Ed) Spence, Springhill, N.S.; and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Vernon was predeceased by his brothers, Andrew, Eric and Richard, and his sisters, Ellen, Evelyn and Olive. In keeping with his wishes, there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service to celebrate the life of Vernon Geddes will be held Monday, July 14, 2008, at 11 a.m., in Wilson United Church, Florence, with Norma Mills officiating. Born in Sydney, on April 15, 1940, Charlie was a lifelong resident of Mira Road. Born and raised in Florence, he was the only child of the late Hubert and Annie Scullen. He was a member of St. Stephen's parish, where he became an altar boy at an early age. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 83, Florence. He worked as a seaman on the Great Lakes for 37 years, serving on the Algonquin and in later years on the Halifax, until his retirement in 2001 due to illness. Scully was an avid baseball player. He excelled at the sport and loved playing dearly for years, starting with Little League. His love of horses and horse racing could not be surpassed. He followed it until his passing. Scully will be greatly missed by Gloria and her family, who became a second family to him. He is survived by a godson, Jamie Taylor and a large number of cousins. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by both sets of grandparents. In keeping with his wishes, there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A memorial mass will take place Monday, July 14, 2008, at 2 p.m. in St. Stephen's Church, Florence, with Fr. Reg Currie officiating. The burial will be in the parish cemetery. Born in North Sydney, Bernice was the daughter of the late John Peter and Ida Mae (Allen) Young. Bernice was a loving, kind and gentle mother who enjoyed spending time with her family, bingo, and a good game of cards. She has touched so many lives and will be greatly missed. Raised in Sydney, Elaine was a woman of abundant love, humour, kindness, compassion and generosity. Her children were her pride and joy in life. A diligent and dedicated worker, she was a longtime employee of Global Television. It was Elaine's personal relationship with the Lord that gives her family comfort in knowing that she found peace and has gone on to Glory. Gwen 'Mom' was born in Birmingham, England, Jan. 21, 1914, to Albert and Rosanna Bennett. She came to Canada as a "little immigrant" in May 1924, to the home of Donald and Mary Smith, West Tarbot. She resided with them and learned all the crafts of Cape Breton life from farming to all domestic duties. Mom was noted for years for her abilities as a spinner, weaver, knitter and quiltmaker (every stitch done by hand). Her quilts have warmed the beds throughout the United States, Scotland and Germany, as well as many other places. She married Lauchie Pottie in 1942 and most of their life was lived "at the corner" in Tarbot. He predeceased her in March 1996. Gwen was a life member of the Weavers Guild. She will be remembered for her humour, her faith in the Lord Jesus and her zest for life. She will be remembered always, loved and missed by her children, Rosanna (Everett Lewis), Carl (Lynn) and Marsha (Sandy) Allen; seven grandchildren; five great grandchildren. She is also survived by several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. To her family, she is indeed a Prov. 31 woman and they will rise up and call her blessed! Born in Dominion, he was the son of the late Michael and Catherine (Campbell) McMullin. He was predeceased by brother, Mickey (Lorraine). He is survived by his daughters, Karren and Cheryl and brother, Jim (Dianne) McMullin and sisters, Phyllis (the late Tom Boutilier), Dominion, Carol (Bob Wry) Moncton, Arlene (John Barren) Greenwood, Lee (Ed Kelly) Halifax, Bernadette (Donald Murphy), Chesincook (??) He was also survived by many nieces and nephews. He received his early education at Macdonald High School in Dominion, then went on to St FX University where he received his bachelor of science degree. He graduated from Ryerson University, Toronto, with a degree in public health. He worked many years in Port Hawkesbury with the Environment Department, retiring in 2004. John was an avid reader who enjoyed woodworking and spent many hours fishing at St. Peter's Canal. He was also an active member of the community coffee club. Born in New Waterford, Caroline was the daughter of Catherine (Fraser) and the late Lawrence McSween of New Victoria. Caroline was baptized, schooled and raised her family for most of her life in New Victoria. In her earlier years, she worked at Nova-Rite Drycleaners in New Waterford, but her pride and joy was her family. Caroline is survived by her mother, Catherine, Seaview Manor, Glace Bay; her sons, Edward, Sydney, Claude (Debbie) Brampton, Ont.; and a daughter, Mary 'Mamie', Georgeown, Ont. She is also survived by sisters, Mary 'Patsy' (Paul) Baxter, Bertha (Victor) Oliveri, both of Brampton, Ont., Barbara (John) McKinnon and a brother, Claude (Shirley) McSween, both of New Victoria. Four grandchildren, Wilfred 'Wilfie', Lauren, Glen and Daren Jospeh 'DJ', also survive Caroline. Caroline was predeceased by her father, Lawrence and a special aunt, Bertha 'Bea'. Also surviving Caroline is her companion of many years, Bernard MacPhee.
