Cape Breton Deaths July 17, 2008 Thursday John Charles Canning 57, Sydney River - It is with saddened hearts that we announce the passing of John Charles Canning, CIM, ECIP, 57, of Sydney River, Tuesday, July 15, 2008. Born in Sydney, he was the son of Myra Canning of Sydney, and the late Harry Canning. John is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Darlene (MacLean); his daughters, Natasha and son-in-law Greg Geizer, Meghan, Nantucket, Mass.; and son, Johnathan and daughter-in-law Jillian, Calgary. Affectionately known as 'Bump', John is also survived by his three special grandchildren, Keagen, Kennedie and Kallum. He will be sadly missed by his siblings, Mryna (Jack) Erickson, Howie Centre, Susan (Robert) Duchemin, Sydney, and Alan (Anna), Lantz, N.S. John worked in the insurance industry for 34 years, coached boy's and girl's hockey in the Cape Breton Minor Hockey Association for many years. A celebration of John's life begins today, Thursday, July 17, 2-4, 7-9 p.m., at Sydney Memorial Chapel. Funeral service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Sydney River United Protestant Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation Cancer Clinic or the charity of one's choice. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Sandra Jean Poulette 35, Eskasoni - Sandra Jean Poulette, 35, of 97 Castle Bay Rd., Eskasoni, passed away suddenly Tuesday, July 15, 2008, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Jean Catherine (Marshall) Poulette and Mr. & Mrs. David and Mildred (Gould) Poulette. She was an avid computer buff and loved to chat online. She was self-employed as an adult care worker for several years in Chapel Island and Eskasoni. She is survived by her companion, Peter Joseph Isaac; a daughter, Angel, three sons, Quentin D., Kenneth R. and Thomas R., all at home; eight sisters, Claudia (Joey) Joe, Cheryl, Amanda, Melissa, Irene, Elizabeth Rose, Charlotte Anne Young and Mag Bernard, all of Eskasoni; six brothers, D. Bradley, Curtis, David Jr., Alphonse Young, Kevin Bernard, all of Eskasoni, and Wilfred Gould, Whycocomagh. Also survived by one granddaughter, Emmie; numerous cousins, several nieces and nephews and one godchild. She was predeceased by her infant son, Thomas Ryan and infant daughter, Kendra and a stepbrother, B.J. Gould. Visitation for the late Sandra Poulette will be after 7 p.m., Saturday, June 19 at the family residence of 97 Castle Bay Rd., Eskasoni. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Monday, July 21 at Holy Family Church with Rev. Martin MacDougall officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery, Eskasoni. Online condolences may be sent to twcurryparkviewchapel@ns.sympatico.ca. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Shirley Cecilia Clarke 69, Sydney Mines - It is with great sadness in our hearts, after a short battle with cancer, we announce the passing of our matriarch at the age of 69, at home, near her garden with her family by her side. Born in Sydney Mines, Shirley was the daughter of the late Joseph and Nora (O'Toole) Richards. She was a member of St. Pius X parish, Sydney Mines. She is survived by her loving husband Harry M. Clarke (Jr.); her cherished children, Cathy MacNeil and Frank Sentence, Ontario, Lonnie and Nancy (Campbell) MacNeil, N.S., and Michael MacNeil, N.S.; stepdaughters, Michelle Adams (Clarke), Ontario, Lisa Clarke, Ontario, and Sonya Clarke, N.S.; as well as six grandchildren. She will be fondly remembered by her sisters, Edith Foster, Joan (Lawrence) Hurley, Mickey (John) Bushnick, and Verna (Cameron) MacNeil. Besides her parents, Shirley was predeceased by a brother, Joseph Richards and her first-born son, John D. (Jack) MacNeil. In accordance with Shirley's wishes, there will be no visitation. A funeral mass will be held at St. Pius X Church, Main Street, Sydney Mines, Saturday, July 19, 2008, at 10 a.m., with Fr. Hughie MacNeil officiating. A reception will follow in the parish hall. In lieu of flowers, donations in Shirley's memory may be made to the Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton. Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of J.M. A special thank you to Dr. John Kirkpatrick, Susan MacKenzie, and all the Palliative Care Staff, as well as the VON for all they did to make her last days with us all that they could be. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ James 'Bruce' Buchanan 1957-2008 Glace Bay - It is with deep sadness that the family announces the passing of James 'Bruce' Buchanan. Bruce passed away Tuesday, July 15, 2008, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. A lifelong resident of Glace Bay he was born July 19, 1957, eldest son of Edna (McGean) and the late James Buchanan. Bruce was Senior Manager of Labor Relations for the Cape Breton District Health Authority. His strong sense of fairness and professionalism earned him the respect and admiration of all his colleagues, not just locally, but provincially as well. Bruce was a member of the Tyrian Youth Lodge #45 and the Cape Breton Drag Racing Association. He was an avid sports fan and especially loved his Maple Leafs. Bruce will be sadly missed by his loving wife, Karen (Snow); cherished daughters, Laura and Lindsay; brothers, Ian and Lorne; sister-in-law, Linda (Walter) Fitzgerald; brother-in-law, Jim Snow; as well as several nieces and nephews. He will also be missed by his constant companion, Spike. In honoring Bruce's wishes, cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Friday, July 18, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The Philae Temple will hold a memorial service Friday evening at 6:45 p.m. in the funeral home. A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, July 19 at St. Paul's Presbyterian Church, Glace Bay with Rev. Michael Henderson officiating. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Glace Bay. Bruce will be missed, but never forgotten ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Michael Patrick Pierro Age 50 - Michael Patrick Pierro, 50, of 5 Church Loop Rd., Wagmatcok, passed away on Monday, July 14, 2008, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Baddeck, he was the son of Victor and Louise Pierro and was adopted at an early age by the late Andrew and Mary Ellen (Pierro) Simon. He was a landscaper and member of Queen of World parish, Wagmatcok. Michael was a quiet man but very visible to community members and children. Michael always made sure that children went home safely. To most children, he was better known as 'Uncle Mike.' He is survived by his brothers, Charles Richard (Mary) Pierro and Francis Chisholm (Bernice) Pierro. He is also survived by sisters, Susie Bernard, Alena Usher, Christine Pierro, Yvonne (Peter) Pierro, Jane Julia (Alliter) Simon and Mary Katerie (Walter) Isadore and several godchildren, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by one brother, John Simon, sisters, Mary Bell Isadore, Ida Mae Bernard, Rubena Gould and Theresa Pierro. The body is resting at the residence of Jane Julia Simon with visiting hours at 5 p.m., Thursday, July 17, 2008. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, July 19, 2008, at Queen of World parish with Rev. Robert MacNeil officiating. Burial will be in parish cemetery. Family flowers only by request.
