Cape Breton Deaths July 02, 2008 Wednesday Archie Woodland 79, New Waterford - Archie Woodland, 79, of 8th Street, New Waterford, passed away Saturday, June 28, 2008, at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital. Born in New Waterford, Archie was the son of the late Eli and Elizabeth (Pynn) Woodland. Archie was a member of the Salvation Army Church and a former member of the Orange Lodge, New Waterford. Archie worked in the coal mines of Cape Breton for 42 years. He loved going to Lake Ainslie with his family and also enjoyed going on fishing and hunting trips with his buddy, John 'Beck' McDonald. Archie will be remembered as a very gentle and quiet man who loved his family dearly. He is survived by one daughter, Deuane (Charles MacKay), Glace Bay; two sons, Dempsey (Anne Fitzpatrick), New Waterford, and Timothy (Lisa Bradley), Sarnia, Ont. Archie is survived by one sister, Marge Watt, Vancouver; and four grandchildren, Jason MacKay, George and Wendell Woodland and Ainslie Rankin. Archie was predeceased by his wife, the former Joan Winnifred Davies, one son, Wendell in infancy, four brothers, Henry, Malcolm, John, Clifford, two sisters, Lillian Schfield and Maude. Visitation Wednesday, July 2 at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford, from noontime until the time of service at 2 p.m. in the Salvation Army Church, New Waterford. Capt. Condolences to the family can be expressed at : www.vjmcgillivray.ca. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Edith 'Eta' Nemis 92, New Waterford - Edith 'Eta' Nemis, 92, of King Street, New Waterford, passed away Monday, June 30, 2008, at New Waterford Hospital, following a long battle with cancer. Born in New Waterford, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Enrica (Miccossi) Nemis. Edith was a member of the Parish of St. Leonard, Mt. Carmel Church. She enjoyed travelling and spent several years in Montreal and then Brantford, Ont. She would also make frequent trips to Los Angeles visiting her daughter, Helen and granddaughter, Ashley. She enjoyed playing cards and darts and was known to be a great conversationalist. Edith was also an active lady who loved to walk. She loved people, especially her relatives, and had a great sense of humour. She will be sorrowfully missed by her daughter, Helen, granddaughter, Ashley, niece, Sally and all of her family and friends. Surviving are daughter, Helen Hendra and granddaughter, Ashley, Los Angeles, Calif.; brother, Joseph (Rita) Nemis, New Waterford; special niece, Sally Durando; special nephew, Leno and his wife Pauline DeGiobbi; as well as several other nieces and nephews. Edith was predeceased by her sisters, Rena Rizzetto, Anna DeGiobbi, brothers, Johnny, Dominic, James 'Cookie' and Louie. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral mass of celebration will be held Friday, July 4 at 2 p.m. in the Parish of St. Leonard, Mt. Carmel Church with Fr. Dan MacDonald officiating. Born in New Glasgow, N.S., she was the daughter of the late John G. and Myrtle (Williams) Blackwood. Joyce enjoyed baking, woodworking, sewing and playing cards. The last number of years, she especially enjoyed playing darts with her many friends at the New Waterford Pensioners Club. She will be sadly and deeply missed by her children, Joe (Dian), Tom (Mary), Tony (Beverly) and Shane (Jennifer), all of New Waterford; also her nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; sisters, Shirley Blackwood, Markham, Ont., and Irene Dack, Fergus, Ont.; brother, Arthur (Pearl), New Glasgow, N.S.; sister-in-law, Sadie (MacKinnon) Blackwood; and lifelong friend, Alice Ryan. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Paul Phillip Aucoin, sister, Jennette, brothers, George Edwin, Kayo Fraser and Robert. Born in New Waterford, Tina was the daughter of the late Norman and Lucy (Tighe) MacLeod. Tina and her husband, Joseph, lived for a number of years in Toronto, where she worked in the cafeteria at Toronto Hydro and did volunteer work with the Salvation Army. She also enjoyed a good game of cards and bingo. Tina is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Joseph Fiore; sons, John, New Waterford, Terry (Diane), Glace Bay, Francis (Rebecca), New Waterford, David (Janis), New Victoria, Joey and Morley (Pat), both of Ontario; daughters, Janette (Ken), Orangeville, Susan, Cathy, both of Ontario, and Leeann (Tony), New Waterford; 27 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; brothers-in-law, Louis Fiore and Bucky Sives; and sister-in-law, Amelia McLeod. A special niece and nephew, Corrine Petrie and Norm McNeil, who were like a brother and sister. Tina was the last surviving member of her family and besides her parents, she was also predeceased by brothers, Norman, Neil, Norman, sisters, Regina, Carmella, Ethel, Christie Effie and Christina, grandson, Justin, uncle, Harry Tighe and aunt, Charlotte Tighe. Visitation for Tina will take place Thursday, July 3 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford, N.S., 862-7500. Born in Sydney, Ruth was a daughter of the late Roy and Frances (Soper) Peddle. Ruth graduated from Glace Bay General as a registered nurse, first in her class. She began her nursing career at Harbour View Hospital, Sydney Mines, and worked in nursing administration until her retirement from Northside Harbour View, 33 years later. Ruth will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She made a real difference, not just in her professional life, but the lives of her wide range of friends and extended family. From an early age, Ruth loved singing, since her debut in the Sydney Academy operetta production of the Pirates of Penzance (1951). She sang for numerous weddings and functions, including her own 50th wedding anniversary, where she sang for her husband. Ruth was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, where she was soloist and choir member for 50 plus years. For approximately 20 years, Ruth sat as a board member of the Baptist Senior Homes for Atlantic Canada. Ruth could often be found at St. George's hall selling her (Swedish needle weaving) T-shirts and for 10 years, she was a member of the Bras d'Or Lakers Craft Guild. Surviving are her husband, George; daughter and best friend, Karen (Victor) Jackson; sons, Robert (Neila) and Donald (Carla); grandchildren, Allan Ryan (Rachel), Jayne Wile (Marcus), Kate, Sarah Tutty (John), Adelle and Amber Buchanan, Graham, Andrew, Nicholas Carmichael, great-grandchild, Brent Tutty; sisters, Margaret Campbell (Duncan), Eva Gillis (Dave) and Carol Peddle (David); brothers, Fraser (Barbara), Robert (Lorraine) and Alan. Ruth was predeceased by her sister, Joan Shaw and brother, Foster. There will be no visitation. A celebration of Ruth's life will be held at Calvary Baptist Church, North Sydney, Saturday, July 5 at 2 p.m. with Rev. John Hannem officiating. Flossie was born in Sydney, the daughter of the late Daniel Surdick Quinn and Mary Elizabeth Digout. She grew up in South Bar, where she resided until her death. Flossie worked many years at Woolco in Sydney River and was a member of Branch 128 legion for more than 50 years. She was an executive member of the women's auxiliary, a member of Branch 128 legion singers and loved playing ukulele with the Ukulele Strummers. She was a member of Club 55 and Sydney Pensioners and played darts three times a week. Flossie is survived by sons, Wilson (Gary) (Shirley), Aberdeen, Shaun (Bev), Whitney Pier, Thom (Anita), Whitney Pier, and Dana (Cheryl), New Waterford; daughters, Heather Sampson, Whitney Pier, Denyse (TC) Norton, Toronto, Wendy (Stan) Cheung, Ajax, Ont., Janine (John) Tubrett, Whitney Pier, and Leanne (Wes Bonnell), Port Perry, Ont. She is also survived by her brother, Leo (Dolly); sisters, Colleen (Leo) and Delores; and many grand and great-grandchildren whom she loved dearly. She was predeceased by her loving husband, John (Jack) McCabe, two sons, Brian David and Derek Joseph, a daughter in infancy, Elizabeth, a great-granddaughter in infancy, Lauren Scarlet, daughter-in-law, Georgina, brothers, Howard, Adrian, Raymond, Bernie and sisters, Thelma, Gertrude and Marion. Flossie was a woman with a loving and warm heart who truly enjoyed having family and friends around. She was always there to assist and there was always room for one more if someone needed a place to stay. She would get up early Saturday mornings and make a large pizza for her family who would come to visit and spend time together. We will never forget that warm and wonderful part of Mom. She was the anchor in all our life stories. In accordance with Mom's wishes, there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service at St. Joseph's Church, New Victoria, at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 3, Fr. Dan MacDonald to preside, with a gathering at Branch 128 legion, Whitney Pier, following the service. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Mass for Shut-Ins or Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton. Born in Neil's Harbour, May 1, 1967, he was the son of Peter Dan and Catherine MacKinnon. He is survived by his two sons, Joshua and Zachery, and his daughter, Hope; brothers, Junior (Stacey), Violet (David) Donovan, Alex (Shaunna) Liston, Clifford (Alice), Arthur (Sherry) and Jason (Chrissy). He is also survived by his 19 nieces and 11 nephews. He will be sadly missed by many family and friends. Graveside service Thursday, July 3 at Greenwood Cemetery, Baddeck, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Born in Dutch Brook, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Maimie (Archibald) Squires. Ruthie is survived by her husband, Murdock Earl Ferguson; daughter, Wendy (Grant) Mann; two sons, Jimmie Ferguson and Randy Ferguson, both of Sydney; her precious grandchildren, Savannah and Breton. She is also survived by her two sisters, Margie (late Jim) Bingley, Dartmouth, Ethel (Frenchie) Sampson, Sydney; as well as several nieces and nephews and her beloved dog, Tippy. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and will be fondly remembered at the R.K. for her beautiful smile. Born in Halifax, Feb. 4, 1921, John volunteered for service in the Canadian Navy during the Second World and served overseas for three years. When he returned home, John followed in the tradition of his father and had a long and successful career with the CNR extending over 45 years. John's devotion to his family, particularly to his late wife Elizabeth during her illness, was an indication of his kind and caring nature. He was a true gentleman, for whom duty, family, church and an appreciation of simple blessings were the cornerstones of his well-lived life. A loyal member of East Gate Lodge of Westmount, Cape Breton, and then Keith Lodge of Stellarton, John received his 50-year jewel in the Masonic Order. John is survived by his daughter, Sharon (Elmer) MacKay, Lorne, and his son, Doug, Stellarton. Besides his parents, Roland and Catherine (Sadie) Lloy, Halifax, John was predeceased in 2000 by his beloved wife of 54 years, Elizabeth (Baylee) Lloy of Pictou County. He was also predeceased by his sister, Marg Armstrong, Ottawa. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Beth MacDonald and Nancy Terris whose exceptional kindness and dedication as caregivers will always be remembered.
