Cape Breton Deaths July 31, 2008 Thursday Margaret (Peggy Nash) Head 80, Howie Centre - It is with great sadness we, her family, announce the passing of Peggy at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital on July 30, 2008. Peggy was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Born in Dominion, she was the daughter of the late Edwin and Katherine (MacNeil) Nash. Peggy is survived by her husband of 63 years, Rolf; one daughter, Kay Edwards, Sydney; two sons, Teddy (Claire), Dartmouth and Frank (Janet), Sydney. She is also survived by her six grandchildren, Laura (Edwards) Smith, Sydney, Diane Edwards, Philadelphia, USA, Keith Ball, Dartmouth, Lyndsey (Ball) Flemming, Dartmouth, Ryan Head, Sydney and Flannery Head, Dartmouth; her four great-grandchildren, Taylor Smith, Alex and Kaelyn Ball and Eliot Flemming and a number of nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceaced by her daughter, Elaine Ball, two brothers, John Nash and Hugh Fraser Nash, son-in-law, Bill Edwards. As per her wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held Friday, Aug. 1 at 3:30 p.m. at Sydney Memorial Chapel with Major Bill Head officiating. Family flowers only. Memorial donations can be made to charity of choice. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Violet Irene McIsaac 94, New Waterford - It is with deep sadness that the family announce the passing of Violet Irene McIsaac, age 94, of Eighth Street, New Waterford. Violet passed away peacefully Tuesday, July 29, 2008, at the Maple Hill Manor in New Waterford. Born in River Ryan, she was a daughter of the late John and Catherine (Lee) Quinn. After the death of her husband, Ronnie, Violet was employed at the New Waterford Hospital in the central supply room, until her retirement. The name Violet suited her quite well, as she loved to have flowers everywhere in her home. Violet truly enjoyed visits from her nephew, Jamsie, 'the Quinn girls', Eileen and Hilda. She was very active in her life and loved playing cards with the ladies in her club (Annie MacEachern, Mary MacKenzie, Ella Cummings, Olive Chiasson, Theresa Webb, Rita Connors), bingo, shopping, sitting on her front step swing having a great chat with neighbours and friends, a good argument and a good joke. She was always dressed to the nines in her leopard skin clothes and wore lots of jewelry. Violet was a member of Mount Carmel parish Catholic Women's League, New Waterford Seniors, Ageing Gracefully and Seniors Exercise Class. She is survived by daughters, Helen (the late Frank) Sharpe, Mary (Jimmy) Kavanaugh, Ann Louise (Danny) MacNeil, all of New Waterford, Deborah (Eddy) McIsaac, Halifax; grandchildren, Kim (Glen) Matheson, Quinn Kavanaugh, Ronnie Sharpe, Stephen (Amber) Sharpe; great-grandchildren, Kendra McIsaac Matheson and Jake Anthony Sharpe; as well as several nieces and nephews. Violet was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Ronald Joseph, one son, John, in infancy, brothers, Barney Quinn and Jimmy Quinn, sisters, Beatrice Carpenter, Minnie Petrie, Alice Cameron, sister-in-law, Catherine McIsaac and niece, Beverley McNeil. Visitation with Violet's family will be held Friday, Aug. 1 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A celebration of Violet's life will take place Saturday, Aug. 2, at 11 a.m. in the Parish of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Church with Fr. Paul MacNeil officiating. Cremation will follow with interment in the parish cemetery at a later date. A luncheon will take place in the Carmel Centre immediately following the mass. All are welcome to attend. Donations in her memory may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association or the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia. Donnie was predeceased by his parents, Clarence Hugh Maclennan, QC, and Hazel Margaret Hyde Maclennan, brother, Clennan in infancy, his grandmother, Ada Jane Johnston Maclennan, beloved uncle, Warren 'Doc' Maclennan and cousin, Arlie Beth Kay. Donnie is survived by his sisters and brother, Dorothy (Roddie) MacNeil, Sydney, Mora Maclennan, North Sydney, Elaine (Terry) MacNeil, Grand Narrows, Allison (Barry) MacKenzie, Christmas Island, and Ian Roy Maclennan, Halifax. Also, by his cherished nieces and nephews, Sarah Jane and Morgan MacKenzie and Ian Hugh and Christina MacNeil; his aunt, Doris; Maclennan cousins, Sheila and Cathy and maternal cousin, Ann Marie Cadden, Edmonton. Our brother, Donnie, was kind and gentle, caring and compassionate. He was always willing to extend a helping hand to his fellow man, friends and strangers alike. He was a wonderful storyteller and conversationalist. His passions included his family, music, books, film, world events, current affairs and dancing. Donnie was a member of Carmen United Church and an associate member of the Royal Canadian Legion. A funeral service in celebration of Donnie's life will be held at Carmen United Church, Clyde Avenue, Sydney Mines, Thursday, July 31 at 4 p.m. with Rev. Shawn Hancock officiating. Friends and family are invited to gather for a reception in the church hall after the service with burial to follow at Brookside Cemetery Halfway Road, Sydney Mines. MacDougall Pictou - Frank Chalmers MacDougall, 83, of Pictou and formerly of Lyons Brook, passed away July 23, 2008, in the Aberdeen Hospital New Glasgow. Born in Big Ridge, Cape Breton, he was a son of the late Norman and Minnie (White) MacDougall. Frank worked as an undertaker and funeral director at Fillmore's Funeral Home in Sydney and car dealerships in Sydney and Halifax. He graduated from Greer Technical School, Chicago, in air conditioning and refrigeration and worked in Florida before moving back to Nova Scotia, where he worked in the maintenance department at Michelin Tire, Granton, until his retirement in 1988. Frank and Claire spent the winters in Florida after he retired. He is survived by his wife, Claire (Langille); son, Roly (Mary), Burlington, Ont.; sister, Katie Eddy, Sydney; sister-in-law, Mabel MacDougall, Sydney; several nieces and nephews; grandchildren, Rhoda, Shawn and Ronald and eight great-grandchildren. Frank was predeceased by brothers, Danny, Donald and Allen and a sister, Floina. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held 7-9 p.m., Friday, Aug. 1 and 11 a.m. to the time of the memorial service at 1 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 2, both in McLaren Funeral Home, Pictou. Mary MacDermid will officiate. Reception to follow. Burial will be in the Bethel Cemetery. Family flowers only. Donations in his memory may be made to the West Pictou Food Bank, the Lyons Brook United Church or a charity of your choice. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ James Garland 68, Baddeck - James Garland, 68, of Baddeck, died Tuesday, July 29, 2008, in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Baddeck, he was a son of the late Sarah (MacLean) and George Garland. He was a mechanic by trade and was a member of Knox Presbyterian Church. He is survived by his wife, Kay (MacLeod) Garland; son, Dougie and wife Nancy (Tarbot); daughters, Ruthann, Sydney Mines; Mary, U.S.A., and Helen, Montreal; brothers, John and Billy Garland, both of Toronto; Ewen (Kay) MacLean, Baddeck; sisters, Rita (Charlie) Cook, Marian (Herman) Phillips, Sally (Billy) MacDonald and Hilda (Aubrey) Pardo, all of Baddeck; grandchildren, Cathy, Justin and Melissa Garland, Brandon, Megan and Jade Bennett. By his request, cremations has taken place. Visitation 1-2 p.m. followed by funeral at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 1, both in Knox Presbyterian Church, Rev. Lloyd Murdock officiating. Burial at a later date. Born in Sydney, she was a daughter of the late Clarence and Flora (Morrison) Peech. Phemie was a member of Trinity United Church, Whitney Pier, and for many years taught at Colby Elementary, retiring as school principal. She is survived by her cousins, Audrey Trider and Clifford Coveyduc, Dartmouth. Besides her parents, Phemie was predeceased by her sister, Mary Evelyn Peech. Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel at 10 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 1, followed by a service in the chapel at 11 a.m. with Rev. Duncan Roach officiating. Interment in Hardwood Hill Cemetery. Special thanks to all Phemie's friends and neighbours who helped during her last days.
