Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late James and Margaret Nearing. Lawrence was an avid Toronto Maple Leafs and Toronto Blue Jays fan. He truly loved to go fishing and hunting. He was well known for his great apple pie. Born in Louisbourg, Cape Breton on Nov. 18,1908, she was the fourth child of Douglas W. and Katherine (Boutilier) Ley. Alice attended school in Louisbourg, graduated from Sydney Academy and the Nova Scotia Normal School, Truro. Always interested in children and learning, supportive and generous with her time, she taught elementary and high school grades in various communities, including Louisbourg and New Waterford. Many of her students became lifelong friends. Her marriage to Victor A. Fisher in 1936 brought Alice to New Waterford where she taught at Central School and actively participated in many aspects of community life. She was a life-member of the United Church Women at Calvin United Church, a charter and life-member of King Edward VIII IODE and keen bridge player. She was an avid reader and enjoyed travelling all her life. For 70 years, Alice supported the work of the Rotary Club of New Waterford and was a Paul Harris Fellow. Efficient, loyal, enthusiastic with a great sense of humour, Alice enjoyed entertaining, readily and happily. The beautiful articles she knitted, crocheted or quilted were much admired and appreciated. Alice is survived by her daughter, Katherine (John) Nickerson, Annapolis Royal; sons, Lorne, British Columbia; and Ralph (Louise), New Glasgow; four grandchildren, Tanya (Michael) Tuckman, Florida, Geoffrey (Kelly) Fisher, New Zealand, Amy Fisher, Minneapolis and New Glasgow, Aaron Fisher, Sydney; along with two great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her family on Monday July 7, 2008, following a courageous battle with cancer. Sharon was born Oct. 24, 1941, in Sydney, to the late James Henry and Mary Jovita (Sampson) McGuire. Sharon attended St. Joseph's School and then graduated from Holy Angels High School in 1960. In April 1961, she was united in marriage to Bruce MacQueen who passed away in 1984. In 1990, Sharon met her common-law partner, Douglas Ritchie who passed away in the summer of 2007. Sharon was employed with Sydco Fuels Ltd. for 23 years until her retirement in 2005. Sharon is survived by her six loving children and 13 wonderful grandchildren. An arpent is a French way of measuring land. It's equal to 100 square perches (A perche is a French equivalent of the English rod). A square perche is 368 square feet, so calculated out one square arpent would be .84 of an acre. "Dit" names are complicated. It seems the French liked to add onto family names to identify one family from another. The "dit" name can represent any number of things, most often the area from where they came (usually in France). It was also used to recognize ownership of land passed down through the family, or to recognize ancient family names. Sometimes it was used to keep the existing French name while standardizing the name to something more local. I believe there is also some military attachment to some of the names. Briard, I believe, tells you the area of France from where they came, and there are several "Brie" towns near Larochelle which might seem likely for the Lejeune name.
