Cape Breton Deaths July 30, 2008 Wednesday Edward 'Eddie' French Sydney - It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Edward 'Eddie' French, on Friday July 25, 2008. Eddie was born in Sydney, N.S., Feb. 28, 1944, the son of Evelyn (Lively) and the late Cecil French. Beloved husband and best friend of Annette (nee MacLean); loved father of Donna (Dan Campbell); sons, Kevin (Evelyn) and Chad (Renee), all of Sydney. Eddie is also survived by his Mom, Evelyn who through her example taught him to be the man he grew to be, a loyal and loving husband, a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather and a devote and compassionate brother to his siblings. He was a true friend to all that knew him. He is survived by grandchildren, Denise, Mitchell, Michelle, David and Tyler and one great grandchild, Donovan. Eddie is survived by his brothers, David (Mary) and Ron (Diane); sisters, Peggy (Eric Brophy), Beverly (Elmer Muise), Germaine (Kenny McLeod) and Debbie (Jack Lessie), all of Sydney; and sister-in-law, Dorothy (Art Young), St. Catharines. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Eddie was a lifelong member of Holy Redeemer parish, Whitney Pier, and an active member of Branch 128, Royal Canadian Legion. Eddie had a zest for life and this shone through in his early morning rising at the break of dawn. It was then that he would contemplate his day and give thanks for his family, his many blessings and especially his Mom, Evelyn. He enjoyed spending time with his friends and sharing the events of the day over coffee as well as a good game of tarabish. He was an avid sports fan with his teams being Toronto Maple Leafs and Toronto Blue Jays. Eddie was employed in his early years with Rowe's Freight & Marine Service, Progressive Wholesale and later with the CBRM. He was predeceased by his father, Cecil, brothers, Johnnie, Bobby and Terry, brother-in-law, Harry Burt, sister-in-law, Sylvia French, mother-in-law, Jeanette MacLean and father-in-law, Dan MacLean. In accordance with Eddie's wishes, his body has been donated to science. A Mass of Remembrance in celebration of Eddie's life will be held at Holy Redeemer Church, Whitney Pier at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 31 with Fr. Errol MacDonald as celebrant. Donnie was predeceased by his parents, Clarence Hugh MacLennan, QC, and Hazel Margaret Hyde MacLennan, brother, Clennan in infancy, his grandmother, Ada Jane Johnston MacLennan, beloved uncle, Warren 'Doc' MacLennan and cousin, Arlie Beth Kay. Donnie is survived by his sisters and brother, Dorothy (Roddie) MacNeil, Sydney, Mora MacLennan, North Sydney, Elaine (Terry) MacNeil, Grand Narrows, Allison (Barry) MacKenzie, Christmas Island, and Ryan MacLennan, Halifax. Also, by his cherished nieces and nephews, Sarah Jane and Morgan MacKenzie and Ian Roy and Christina MacNeil and his aunt Doris and MacLennan, cousins, Sheila and Cathy and maternal cousin, Ann Marie Cadden, Edmonton. Our brother Donnie was kind and gentle, caring and compassionate. He was always willing to extend a helping hand to his fellow man, friends and strangers alike. He was a wonderful storyteller and conversationalist. His passions included his family, music, books, film, world events, current affairs and dancing. Donnie was a member of Carmen United Church and an associate member of the Royal Canadian Legion. A funeral service in celebration of Donnie's life will be held at Carmen United Church, Clyde Avenue, Sydney Mines, Thursday, July 31 at 4 p.m. with Rev. Shawn Hancock officiating. Dance, dance, wherever you may be! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ David Campbell Bruce 69, Dartmouth - David died suddenly at home on July 28, 2008. Born in Sydney Mines, he was a son of the late David and Christine (MacLean) Bruce. He is survived by son, Steve (Margo), Dartmouth; daughter, Carolyn, Brantford, Ont.; grandchildren, Andrew and Julianne Bruce; brother, Brian (Geraldine), Dartmouth; sister, Ronalda (Roy) Bishop, Sydney Mines; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Linda (George) Ferguson, Dartmouth. David left home as a teenager to become a military policeman in the Canadian Forces and was posted in Debert, Marville, France, Torbay, Nfld., Greenwood, Shearwater and Chatham, N.B., before retiring in 1977 and moving to the Truro area with his family. His children were born in Belgium while he was stationed in France. He lived in Halifax-Dartmouth for the last 20 years of his life and spent hours walking around downtown Dartmouth and the Sullivans Pond area. He adored his grandchildren, who affectionately referred to him as GaGa, and was so proud of their accomplishments, particularly in hockey. The past two seasons, he rarely missed a Dartmouth High boys game or Dartmouth Whalers bantam girls contest. Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be held Friday, Aug. 1 at 11 a.m. at Dartmouth Funeral Home, 29 Queen St. Family flowers only. Donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of your choice. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Heather Lorraine (Mackie) McMullin April 5, 1948-July 22, 2008 Gardiner Mines/Peterborough - It is with deep sadness that we, the family announce the passing of our dear sister, Heather, at the Peterborough Regional Health Centre, on July 22, after a brief battle with cancer. Heather is survived by her beloved husband, Gerry McMullin, and cherished sons, Jason (Shelley) and Michael. Will be greatly missed by grandchildren, Maybelle, Tarok and Ethan. Loving sister of Louise (Charlie) Boutilier, Evelyn (the late Fabian) Boutilier, George (Rosalind) Mackie, Anne (Wayne) Gedney, Seward Mackie, Brendan (Judy) Mackie, Leone (Keith) White, Gail (Daniel) O'Connell, and sister-in-law of Joan Mackie. Donations to the Cape Breton Cancer Centre or the Children's Wish Foundation may be made in her memory. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ David Wayne Moore April 26, 1946-July 29, 2008 - It is with sadness that the family of David Wayne Moore announces his passing at Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on July 29, 2008. Wayne was 62 years old. Wayne was born and raised in Sydney, the eldest son of Marty Moore and Della (Martell). His early career was spent in policing with the Royal Canadian Air Force, Sydney Police Department and Sydney Steel Corp. More recently he had a career in property management in Western Canada where he made many friends in his work. Wayne is survived by his wife of 33 years, Georgina (Saunders); her son, Frankie Walker (Sydney); daughter, Shauna Walker (St. Croix) and four grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers, Barry (Shenacadie), Paul (Margie, Sydney), their two sons, Iain and Matthew, and his sister, Coleen Moore Hayes (Allen, Westmount) and nephew, Kenneth. Smith 40, Baddeck - It is with heavy hearts we announce the sudden passing of a dear son, brother and uncle. George C. Smith, 40, of Twinning Street Baddeck, died July 19, 2008, in Red Deer, Alta. Born in Baddeck, he was the son of the late Colin Smith, survived by Mabel (MacDonald) Smith. He was an occupation sales manager and a member of the Knox Church, Baddeck. George will be sadly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. He is survived by three sisters, Joan Smith, Colleen (Bert) Kendall, Mae Smith and his nephew, Daniel. At the family's request, cremation has taken place and a memorial service will take place at Knox Church, Thursday, July 31, 2008, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Lloyd Murdock officiating.
