Cape Breton Deaths July 21, 2008 Monday Anna Philemena Hillier 85, New Waterford - It is with great sadness that we announce Anna (Van Hove) Hillier passed away peacefully Sunday, July 20, 2008, at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital, surrounded by her loving family. Born Dec. 18, 1922, in Antwerp, Belgium, Anna was the daughter of the late Mathilda (Sleeckx) and Henri Van Hove. She married the late Walter Hillier in Belgium on Jan. 11, 1946. Anna was a loyal member of All Saints Anglican Church. A true lady, she enjoyed life, especially her family, her grandchildren, summers in Mira, her friends and her many adventures with her war bride friends. Anna is survived by her daughter, Lillian (Colin) Donovan; daughter-in-law, Margie (MacIntyre) Hillier; grandchildren, Shawn (Klaire), Ryan (Eva), Conal (Aimee), Leeannem, Gillian, Matthew; and great-grandchild, Cullan; numerous Canadian nieces and nephews and Belgiumm nephews, Henri Van Hove and Thion Eeckels. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Walter, her son, Harry, brothers, Victor and Alfons, sisters, Rosalie, Lean and Margarite. Visitation for Anna will take place Tuesday, July 22 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at McLellan Brotheres Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford, N.S., 862-7500. A funeral service to celebrate Anna's life will be held Wednesday, July 23 at 11 a.m. in All Saints Church with Rev. Stacey LeMoine officiating. Burial will be held in the parish cemetery with a luncheon to follow in the church hall, all are invited. A sincere thank you for the help and kindness given to Anna is extended to the VON, Dr. Farrell and the staff of the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.mclellanfuneralhome.com. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Duncan Francis Currie 83, Campbell River, B.C./New Waterford - Duncan Currie, 83, passed away Saturday, July 19, 2008, at his home on Plummer Avenue, New Waterford, surrounded by his family. Born in New Waterford, Duncan was the son of the late Duncan Sr. and Mary (Hawley) Currie. He worked for a short time in No. 16 Colliery then moved to Ontario and finally settled in Campbell River, B.C. for many years. While in British Columbia as well as Ontario, Duncan worked at various jobs. One of the last jobs he was employed at was working at the B.C. School Board. Duncan always displayed a strong work ethic. He was described as a quiet man and good listener with an easygoing, kind nature. Duncan was a Third Degree Member of the KOC, Council 5468, Campbell River, B.C. and very active in church affairs. He is survived by his sister, Martha Gillis, New Waterford, whom he was residing with the past few weeks; two brothers, John (Chris), Boston, Gerald, B.C.; and several nieces and nephews. Duncan was predeceased by his wife the former Loretta St. Denie, two sisters, Margaret Boutilier, Mary Murray and two brothers, William and Al. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, New Waterford. The funeral mass is Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Parish of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Church followed by interment in the parish cemetery. The reception will take place at St. Agnes Parish Hall. As an expression of sympathy for Duncan, donations in his memory may be made to Cape Breton Palliative Care Society. Born in New Waterford, she was the daughter of the late Gaston and Elizabeth (Mason) Lussier. Mary was a member of the Parish of St. Leonard, St. Agnes Church. She was a very kind and compassionate lady who loved to knit, crochet and solve book puzzles. Mary is survived by three daughters, Betty (Pat) Bartlett, Sydney, Florence MacLellan (Roddie), Dominion, and Carol, New Waterford. Also surviving are four sons, David (Jennifer), Dougie (Vilay), Allan (Méta), all in Ontario, Don, at home; and her sister, Carmen Woodland, New Waterford. Mary was grandmother to, April, Heather, Jennifer, Al, Keith, Mason, Mitchell, Ian, Star, Luna, Sky; and three great-grandchildren, Santana, Carrigan and Ross. She is also survived by a daughter-in-law, Georgina. Mary was predeceased by her husband, Alex MacLellan, one son, Alex Jr., sister, Theresa Brennan and two brothers, Emil 'Butch' and Gaston 'Gum Eye' Lussier. Visitation will take place Monday, July 21 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. The funeral mass will be celebrated Tuesday, 11 a.m. in the Parish of St. Leonard, St. Agnes Church followed by interment in the parish cemetery. All are welcome to join the family for a reception in the parish hall directly across from the church. Born at Neil's Harbour, she was the daughter of the late Dan J. and Annie (Buchanan) MacDonald. She was a member of Cape North United Church and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was a member of the Hannah MacLeod Unit of the UCW, and operated the Highland Heart Canteen in Dingwall for over 35 years. She is survived by three sons, Walter, Dingwall, Arnold (Clara Fitzgerald), Baddeck, and Neil (Carrol Ann), Dingwall; sisters, Janet Dowling, Pictou, Hectorine MacDougall, Glace Bay; grandchildren, Debbie, Scott, Wally, Dwayne, Tanya, Jonathan, Jonilynn and Krisha; great-grandchildren, Jordan, Jessica, Mitchell, Madeline, Carter, Keegan, Talia, Kori, Gavyn, Joey and Ryan; and a number of nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, John Neilie, her son, Alexander, granddaughter, Melanie, brothers, Donnie B., Munroe and Murdock, sisters, Mary, Evelyn and Jane. The family extends a special thank you to the doctors and nurses of Buchanan Memorial Hospital for the excellent care given to mom. Online condolences available at www.glenoaks.ca. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Larry Mikol - Larry Mikol, 61, died in An Cala Palliative Care Unit Cape Breton Regional Hospital July 18, 2008 after a 14-month struggle with leukemia. A longtime resident of Cape Breton, he and wife, Donna, operated a family farm in North River, raising four children. He worked as a furniture maker, carpenter, trained in silviculture and forest management and was known to close friends as a poet and musician. Friend and mentor to many, Larry was beloved for generosity, humour and wisdom. With his family, he was an active member of the Baddeck Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses. Survived by his wife of 36 years, Donna; children, Jessica (Sean), Gabriel (Rachel), Carmel and Luke (Krisann); granddaughter, Judea; sister, Dina (Ted) Horn; mother-in-law, Laura Entin; sister-in-law, Martha Entin (Chris); many dearly loved nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late John and Agnes (MacDougall) Bennett. Jean was a school teacher, retiring in 1991 after a lengthy teaching career in the Port Hawkesbury school system. She was active in the Retired Teachers Association and was also an active volunteer with the Port Hawkesbury Food Bank. She was a member of St. Mark's United Church, Port Hawkesbury. Surviving are daughter, Pamela, Halifax; son, Ebbie (Gail), Port Hawkesbury; grandchildren, Ryan, Ashley, Madison, Alan and Emily; sister, Mary 'Benny' Sheppard, Glace Bay; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Ebbie, son, Kenneth in infancy, daughter, Lesley MacMaster, son-in-law, Joseph MacMaster, brothers, Alec and Jackie. Visitation will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Born in Cheticamp, he was the son of the late Damas and Emma (Poirier) Gaudet. He was a member of St. Peter's Church, Cheticamp. He was a veteran of the Second World War serving in the Canadian Army. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He is survived by several nieces and nephews. He will be missed by everyone who ever knew him. Predeceased by his brother, Joseph Gaudet, two sisters, Julie Muise and Olive AuCoin. Cremation has taken place. A graveside service will be held today (Monday) at 10 a.m. in St. Peter's Cemetery, Cheticamp with Fr. Peter LeBlanc officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery. She was the daughter of the late James and Beatrice (LeRiche) Kettle. She was a member of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church and a devoted member of the church choir for over 60 years. She was a life member of St. Andrew's AMS, a past Explorer leader, a former Sunday school teacher and a Vacation Bible school teacher at St. Andrew's. She is survived by her daughter, Brenda (Jack Billard), George's River; granddaughter, Angela (David Measher), granddaughter, Anita (Kenny Mountain); great-grandchildren and lights of her life, James and Claire Measher and Brandon Mountain. She is also survived by her stepson, Freeman (Margie Serroul), Sydney Mines; step granddaughter, Mary (Jake Rendell), George's River; step great-granddaughter, Stacey (Jamie Billard), Sydney Mines; step grandsons, Jamie Rendell, Sydney Mines, and Shaun Rendell, George's River, step great-granddaughter, Abigale; and step great-grandson, Max Billard. Also surviving are sisters, Amelia Bird, Halifax, Jean Kettle, Grand Bay, N.L., Rita Collins, St. John's, N.L.; and brother, Arthur (Jean), Grand Bay, N.L. She was predeceased by her loving husband, James, sister, Myrtle Kettle, brothers, Walter, Cyril, Harold and Oscar Kettle.
