Matheson, Helen - published March 2, 2009 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- John 'Johnny' Burke, Glace Bay at Main-a-Dieu , Nova Scotia , Canada - It is with heavy hearts and deep regret that we announce the passing of John David Johnny Burke of Main-a-Dieu at Taigh Na Mara Veterans Home, Glace Bay Saturday, Feb. 28, 2009, where he has resided since November 2006. Born in Main-a-Dieu, he was the son of the late John David and Annie (Mountain) Burke. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Johnny enlisted in the army at a young age and served overseas with the Cape Breton Highlanders during the Second World War. When he returned home, he began fishing and married his sweetheart the late Barbara Burke of Little Lorraine who passed away in 2007 after 60 years of marriage. Together they raised seven children, daughters, Marilyn (Gerry) Goyetche, Margie (Arthur) Kennedy, Debbie (Harvey) Sharpe, all of Main-a-Dieu and Penny (Mike) Hemmings of Sydney; sons, Fr. Bill Billy Burke, Ottawa, Kenzie (Charlene) Calgary, Joe (Debbie) Louisbourg and special son Howard (Valerie) Oehman of Halifax; 11 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, who enjoyed his great sense of humour. Besides his parents and wife, he was predeceased by sisters, Margaret, Mary and Catherine; brothers, Joe and Basil. Visitation will be held in Immaculate Conception Church, Main-a-Dieu, Wednesday, March 4, 2009, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held from the church on Thursday, March 5, at 2 p.m. with Fr. Bill Burke officiating, assisted by Fr. Patrick ONeil and Deacon Howard Oehman. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Born in Georges River, he was a son of the late George P. and Rose (Brown) Cartwright. Ken was employed as a coal miner in his early years, he also trucked coal, and later became a commercial fisherman until his retirement. In his leisure time, he was a skilled wood worker. He enjoyed his weekly Treat Night with all of his grandchildren and neighborhood friends. He is survived by his 12 children, Kenneth Jr., Wallace (Karen), Ellen (Ron), David (Jackie), Rosanne (Boyce), Arthur (Mary), Deborah (Ken Lalonde), Robert (Barbara), Dwight (Allan), Paul (Wendy), Carl (Joanne), Ruth (Greg Lively); the mother of his children, Mary (MacInnis) Cartwright; sisters, Ethel Missy Johnston, Mildred Kettlewell (Glen), Audrey Boutilier, Nancy Young; brothers, Gerald, Edward Teddy (Marge), George (Meredith); and by 31 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild; as well as his loving companion, Isabel Moore. Kenneth was predeceased by his two infant daughters, Carolyn Anne and Shauna and by two sisters, Muriel and Ruth. Raymond passed away on Saturday, Feb. 28, 2009 at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital. Born in Glace Bay he was the son of the late Bill and Cassie (Matheson) Coffin. Raymond was a veteran of the Second World War and a member of Branch 3 Legion. He was employed as a mechanic at Highland Motors for several years. He then trained as an electronics technician and operated a successful business for over 40 years, retiring in 1996. He was known as the TV Man by many of his customers. He took a keen interest in computers, enjoyed playing the guitar and loved to go for drives. He will be sadly missed by his two sons, Jerry, Ronnie (Janine) (with whom he resided), Glace Bay; brothers, Norman (Amelia), Donald (Shirley), James (Debbie) and Kelvin (Eileen), Glace Bay; sisters, Helen (Ernest) McKenzie, Glace Bay, Sara (Reg) Deveaux, Westmount, Carol (Bob) Norsworthy, Caribou, ME; cherished grandchildren, Troy (Cathy), Tammy, Dayna (Stephen) Murray, Rhonda (Tom) Gaudette and five great-grandchildren. Our mother was a wonderful, loving person who loved to be surrounded by her family and many friends. She was a devoted grandmother. Born in Louisbourg, Annice was the daughter of Dan W. MacDonald and Margaret Fiander. Annice was a homemaker and member of St. Pauls Presbyterian Church in Glace Bay. Annice was also a longtime member of St. Pauls Service Club and Morrison Home and School. Annice took great pride in her family, entertaining friends with her cooking and baking, and loved her summer home in Trout Brook, Mira. Annice is survived by daughters, Myrna (Clarence) Mmiller and Coleen Locke-MacLeod, both of Glace Bay; son, Bill (Diane), Glace Bay; sisters, Mary MacQuarrie, Anna Lloyd Lamb, both of Glace Bay, Willa Clarke, California; and sister-in-law, Sanda Locke, Glace Bay. Annice is also survived by seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and two step great-grandchildren. Annice was predeceased by her husband, Thomas W. Online condolences may be emailed to patten@seaside.ns.ca. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mr. Donald Roy MacLean, Glace Bay at Neil's Harbour , Nova Scotia , Canada - Donald Roy MacLean, 79, passed away peacefully Monday, March 2, 2009, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex after a short illness. Born in Neils Harbour, he was the son of the late Murdock and Flora (Strickland) MacLean. He joined the armed forces in 1954 seeing most provinces in Canada, including a tour in Germany for two years as well as serving with the United Nations in Egypt for one year. He had the opportunity to work the 1974 Olympics where he transported athletes during their stay in Montreal. He was stationed to the Sydney Radar Base in 1970 and there he continued to serve until his retirement in 1979. For the next 20 years he was probably best known as a rink attendant at the Dominion Complex. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and was an avid hockey enthusiast. He thoroughly enjoyed the camaraderie of the many players he met. Although a colourful character who was never afraid to voice his opinion, he was a man with simple needs. Donald Roy is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Helen Mary (Kosick) MacLean; four children, Joan (Paul) Desveaux, Cheticamp, Donna (David) Peach, Glace Bay, Colleen (Glen) Miller, Glace Bay; and son, Donald (Crystal) MacLean, Stellarton. He was affectionately called Grandfather by his grandchildren, Ryan, Jason, Shannon, Clinton, Renee, Grampie by Jeffrey, and Poppy by Samantha and Taylor; great-grandchildren, Jaden, Angelina and Grace. D.R. is also survived by his sister, Louise (Eldred) Wareham, and brother, Roddie (Irene) MacLean. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Norma MacLean. Born on June 5, 1947, he was a son of the late Leo and Irene Steves. He lived his childhood in Cape Breton, before moving to Toronto, where he lived for 43 years. Surviving are his loving wife, Jean (Mainoway); children, Barry, Patricia, Nancy and Julia and several grandchildren, all of Toronto; brothers, Leo, Ronald, Malcolm, Brian and Gerald, all of Sydney, Lewis of Edmonton and Raymond of Calgary. There will be no visitation. Funeral arrangements will take place in Ontario. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sister Anne Timmons, Halifax at Ingonish , Nova Scotia , Canada - Sr. Anne (Rita Ursula) Timmons, 105, died at Parkstone Enhanced Care in Halifax on February 28, 2009. Born in Ingonish, Cape Breton, she was a daughter of the late Angus and Jessie (Currie) Timmons. She entered the Sisters of Charity in Halifax in 1922 and made her Religious Profession in 1925. Sister Anne taught school for over 50 years in Nova Scotia, British Columbia and in the United States. Sister continued to work as a reading specialist in North Sydney and New Waterford, N.S. in a volunteer capacity for the next 20 years, prior to retiring to the Mount in Halifax in 1995. She remained active in her retirement years with visiting the sick and the ministry of prayer. She is survived by many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews and their families. She was predeceased by brothers, Adrian, Cletus, Sid, Leo, Russell; sisters, Viola, Clare, Agnes, Victoria (Sister Mary Huberta, Sister of Charity), Cecelia and Ursula. Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Agnes (Campbell) Johnston. She was a member of Immaculate Heart Parish, Mira Road. For a while, she was employed at Smith's Bakery in Ashby and then later she was bakery manager at Sobey's. Barbara loved music and dancing and she enjoyed the company of her family and friends. She will be sadly missed by her husband, Bernie, her daughter Leasa and son, Trevor. Born in 1920, in Montreal, Que, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Ethel (Mercer) Sheppard. Helen worked as a savings clerk at the Bank of Nova Scotia for several years. She is survived by two daughters, May Matheson-Thomas (Aubrey) of Yarmouth, Maine, and their daughters, Megan Thomas Genthner (Michael) and Aubin Thomas, both of Maine, and one great grandson, Max Genthner of Maine: and Marie Matheson (Nick Soper) of Gander, NL, and their children, Robin Soper of California, Hilary Soper and Katie Soper of Newfoundland.
