MacLeod, William Layaton - published March 5, 2009 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Constance 'Connie' MacDonald, Baddeck Born in 11/02/1934 at Glace Bay , Nova Scotia , Canada - Constance Mary ‘Connie’ MacDonald of 57 MacLeod Street, Baddeck, N.S., died suddenly February 28, 2009, at home at the age of 75. She was born February 11, 1934 in Glace Bay, daughter of the late George and Mary (MacDougall) Briggs. Connie will be sadly missed by her beloved husband of 52 years, Donald ‘Don’ J. MacDonald and two daughters, Geraldine and Donna (MacDonald) husband, Dave Clark; grandchildren, Louie and Josie Zita (son and daughter of Geraldine of Mississauga), Amanda and Ulanta Clark (daughters of Donna and Dave of Brampton); brothers and sisters, Danny Briggs (Judy), Marilyn Popwell (Jack), Joan Aucoin (Eddie), all of Glace Bay, George Briggs (Margaret), Mississauga, Sheldon Briggs (Diane), Glace Bay, Wayne Penny of Glace Bay; many special nieces, nephews and many friends. She was predeceased by brother, Gerald and his wife, Annie Briggs, Ken and his wife, Sandra Briggs. Service will be held at Greenwood United Church, Baddeck on Saturday, March 7, 2009 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Karen Lynch officiating. As an expression of sympathy for Connie, donations in her memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Annette Rideout, Neil's Harbour at Neil's Harbour , Nova Scotia , Canada Annette Marie Rideout, age 64, of Neil’s Harbour, passed away at Buchanan Memorial Hospital on March 5, 2009, after a courageous battle with lung disease. Born at Neil’s Harbour, she was the daughter of Eliza (Fitzgerald) MacLean and the late Archibald MacLean. She was a proud mother, grandmother, friend and was a devoted member of St. Andrew’s Anglican Church. She is survived by her daughter, Sherry (Eric), Lower Sackville; sons, David (Sherry), Neil’s Harbour, Murray (Margaret), Neil’s Harbour, Michael (Pauline), Halifax, Claude (Florence), Halifax; her brother, Angus (Stella), Coldbrook, N.S.; 11 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter and her special friend, Roger. She was predeceased by her husband, Herman. There will be no visitation by request. Funeral services will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Saturday in St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, Rev. Vernon Reid officiating. Burial under the direction of Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home will be in St. Andrew’s Cemetery at later date. She lived a full life, in Sydney, in Antigonish while at St. FX, in Halifax and since 1973 in Vancouver, with her husband of 33 yrs, David Hopgood. She passed away on Monday, March 2, 2009, of complications due to lung cancer at home with David. Alayne was predeceased by her parents, Gerald and Bernadette "Bernie" (O'Neil) Keough. She is survived by her husband and their three children, Amber, Elizabeth and Stephen as well as her son Denis Fricker and granddaughter Taylor. In addition, her siblings, Fran (Al, Jack, Ron and Jerry, Pat (Kathy). Alayne will be remembered for many things, She raised three beautiful children. Her love and passion for them urged her to become inboleved in their school and her community. She became very involved, eventually serving as the chair of the Vancouver School Consultative Committee. She was instrumental in stopping the spread of big box housed in Kitsilano and recently worked to help preserve the trees along West Broadway. She was active in politics as presdient of the Kits Point Grey NDP, was on the NDP provincial executive and sat on their provincial council. Up until her death, she was co-chair of the West Kits Residences Association. In her work life, she followed the path of advocating for the poor and disadvantaged working at Tenant's Rights Action Committee, the Downtown Eastside Residents' Association and BC Public Interest Advocacy Centre. She stopped working shortly after being diagonsed with lung cancer in June 2008. She fought this scourge valiantly, never complaining until Monday. Many may remember Alayne waling her white boxer, Kyra, a gift from Amber, when she moved to Toronto. In addition to her work in the community, Alayne was an accomplished cook, as evidenced by the smiling faces when they tasted her food, both in her home, and when she managed to fit in a few catering jobs in her spare time. She has attended every Vancouver Folk Festival since it's inception, arriving very early to hold a place for the "runner", and has one child that has been there for everone of her 29 years. A summer vacation in Nova Scotia, especially on the beach at Ingonish, has been a highlight most years and Alayne has many dear friends in that beautiful province. Alayne's ashes will be spread on both coasts. Visitation/viewing will be on Monday, March 9, 2009 from 12:30 - 2 pm in the Fireside Room at the Unitarian Church, 949 W - 49th Ave, at Oak Street, Vancouver, BC. There will be a service starting at 2 pm with a reception to follow. A fund in Alayne's name has been set up wtih the Vancity Community Foundation. Instead of flowers, we urge you to donate towards the Alayne Keough Fund to keep her fight against poverty and for social advocacy alive; make cheques payable to Vancity Community Foundation, Alayne Keough Fund, P.O.
