Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Martin and Josephine (Dawson) Delaney. She was a member of Holy Rosary Parish, the Catholic Woman's League and the Sydney Pensioners Club. Mary was an expert seamstress having worked at the Canada Games in 1987. She was also a avid bowler, bingo player and active traveler to figure skating competitions across Canada. She is survived by two daughters, Lynn of Sydney and Karen at home, two sons, Blair (Patricia) of Sarnia, Ontario, and Michael (Frankie) of Sydney. She will also be missed by her five favorite grandchildren, Cheryl, Ryan, Jennifer, Kathyn and William. She is also survived by three sisters, Margaret (Earle) Healey, Agnes (Marty) MacIntyre, Jean MacLeod, four brothers, Mart (Ruth), Jim (Cecelia), Joe (Betty) and Pat (Myrna). She was predeceased by her husband, William "Bill" Tobin in 1982, brothers Gerry and Ron and sister Theresa Smith. Visitation for the late Mrs Tobin will take place at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel on Monday, March 9, 2009 from 2-4 & 7-9 pm. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Tuesday at 11 am, at Holy Rosary Church with Rev Doug Murphy officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery. Donations may be made to the C.B. Cancer Centre, C.B. Palliative Care, V.O.N., or a charity of one's choice. Born in Sydney Mines, she was the daughter of the late Carl and Helen (Donovan) Morgan. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Parish. She is survived by her daughter Patricia (Mike) Williams, sons, Joseph (Donna), Clarence (Valerie) and Melvin (Crystal), all of Sydney Mines. She is also survived by sisters Millie (Dan) Young, Jean (Bob) McGean, Yvonne (Doug) Serroul, and brothers Clarence, Carl (Lillian), Wallace (Dorothy), and Morgan, 15 grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her companion, Anthony Thurbide. She was predeceased by her loving husband Harold Gerrow and sisters Blanche and Eunice. Visitation of the late Mrs. Gerrow will be in the Fillmore & Whitman Funeral Home on Sunday from 2-4 & 7-9 pm. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday at 2 pm in Immaculate Conception Church. Fr. Born in Lower L'Ardoise, she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Mary (Masters) Sampson. She was a long time member of St. Theresa's Parish, Sydney. In her earlier years, she was employed at Kurtins Dairy on Gore Street. A devoted daughter, wife and mother, Emma is survived by one son George Albert MacNeil Jr. of Amherst, daughter-in-law Margaret and granddaughters Katelyn and Erin, a sister Sara Miles of Dartmouth, a brother Hillary "Frenchie" (Ethel) Sampson of Sydney. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 38 years, George Albert MacNeil on August 14, 2001. Visitation for Mrs. MacNeil will take place at T.W. Born in Stellarton, she was the daughter of the late Hugh Fleming and Ethel (Cameron) MacKenzie. She will always be remembered by friends and family for her beautiful soprano voice. Betty is survived by her husband, Walter, sons, Bruce and Kevin Mallory, daughter, Elizabeth (Tony) Blake, five grandchildren and one great grandchild. She is also survived by brothers, Alexander MacKenzie of Trenton, NS, and Hugh Parker of Scotsburn, NS, sisters Sharon (Geoffrey) Wilson of Sydney, NS, and Isabel Zwicker of French Village, NS, and several nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place in St. Thomas, Ontario, Condolences may be sent to the family at sydneymemorialchapel@ns.sympatico.ca -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Gordon Edward MacDermid, Sep 22, 1939 - Mar 3, 2009 - Gordon MacDermid died peacefully at Health Sciences Centre, Winnipeg, on Tuesday afternoon, March 3, 2009. Gordon was raised in Westmount, NS, before venturing out to earn his B.A. at Mount Allison University and his M.Dv. at Pine Hill Divinity Hall in Halifax. In 1961, he was ordained as a minister in the United Church of Canada. His first pastoral charge was West Bay, NS. After completing his Ph.D. in Church History at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland, he returned with his young family to join the faculty at Pine Hill Divinity Hall in 1967. His association with the school, which became part of the Atlantic School of Theology, continued for 33 years, and saw him take on a variety of roles and challenges there. During that time, he also served for five years as minister for St. Andrew's United Church in Halifax. Too young to retire at 60, he moved west to occupy the office of the Dean of Theology at the University of Winnipeg until 2005. Throughout his career, he was active at different levels in the United Church and was, for many years, on the board of the Association of Theological Schools, which afforded him many welcome opportunities for travel. After retireing, he continued to contribute to the community. The peace movement was especially important to him among the many social issues that drew his attention and energy. His passion for life manifested itself in his zeal for lively debate, his habit of staying in motion, his curiosity about people and his delight in their diversity. He enjoyed the feel of a fountain pen on paper, the taste of single malt scotch, the sound of Leonard Cohen's songs, and the sight of the highlands of Cape Breton. Gordon possessed a rare intellect, abundant compassion, extraordinary humour, and sesquipedalian vocabulary, gifts he readily shared with all who cared to receive them. Gordon was predeceased by his parents, Edward and Katherine (Morrison) MacDermid of Wreck Cove, NS. He is survived by his children, Graeme, Heather (Barry) Meston and John (Meaghan Seagrave), their mother, Pam MacDermid, his brother, Allison (Jane, his sisters, Mary and Anne, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He is also remembered by the many close friends he cherished in his life. Visitation will be held on Monday, March 9, 2009 from 2-4 & 7-9 pm at Sydney Memorial Chapel, 49 Welton Street, Sydney, NS. Born in Cape Breton on March 2, 1927, to the late Peter R. and Elizabeth (Burton) MacDonald. Rannie "Beaver" worked for CNR for forty-six years. He was a proud railroader who was well respected for his work ethic and easy going ways. Ronald was an honest man who loved family, friends, music, card games and a good joke. He was athletic (hockey and baseball) in his younger years and in later years, enjoyed being a sports fan and proudly supported his grandchildren's activities. Ronald is survived by his wife of fifty-four years, Maxine (Richardson), two sons, Darren (Louise) and Sheldon, three daughters, Debbie (Frank) Muller, Kim (Al Ferguson) and Michelle (deceased in 1970, six grandchildren, Lauren, Mark, Brittany and Jenna Muller, Mitchel and Kristin Ferguson. Ronald was predeceased by brothers Clifford, Jim, George and Bobbie MacDonald, Joe and Raymond Collier, sisters Julia, Eunice and Arthena. He is survived by Donnie (Barb) Collier, Dellie Dove, and Lorraine Schofield. Ronald and Maxine enjoyed many road trips with John and Lois (Richardson) Dunn of Sydney, NS. Dad was proud of his Cape Breton heritage, and moved with Maxine to Calgary in 2000 to be close to his family. Until his passing, he resided at The Villas, where mom & dad made wonderful new friends. She will be fondly remembered by her grandchildren, David, Emily, Jillian and Kash, her sister Wendy (Buck) and relatives and friends. She ws predeceased by her parents and daughter Natalie. The family would like to thank the staff, past and present, of Taigh Solas (3rd floor), Northside General Hospital, who became her second family, for their long time care and commitment. Born in New Waterford, she ws the daughter of the late Malcolm E. and Janet (Humphrey) Rose and was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was a kind and gentle person, an avid bowler, with many awards and loved nature, was an honest hard working employee of Zellers for 33 years, having worked all positions there and was an adherent of Calivn United Church in New Waterford. Catherine is survived by her loving husband of 22 years, Vincent and also aunts, Millie Humphrey of Sydney, and Lucy Gorman of Victoria Mines, Eileen Humphrey of Halifax, Alice Humphrey of Newfoundland, and Winne Rose of Alberta. Besides her parents, Catherine was also predeceased by her brother, Ruben, uncles Bobby Thomas and Jimmy Humphrey, Wesley Rose and aunt, Lillian Antle. Cremation has taken place, by her request. She is with God now" -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Katherine Munro (MacIntosh) Wilson, Milton, Ontario - Katherine Munro (MacIntosh) Wilson in her 96th year, passed away peacefully at Allendale Nursing Home, Milton, Ontario, on February 06, 2009. She was predeceased by husband, Adrian, sons, John and Wayne and granddaughter Cathy. She is survived by her son, Joe and his wife, Valerie of Calgary, grandchildren, Christopher, Ian, Andrea, Amanda and Derek, great grandchildren, Raven, Christine and Riley. She was predeceased by brothers, Earl, Dan, Harriett (Kemp), Erma and Anna (Gouthro). Katie was born in Donkin, the second eldest child of John and Annie (Panton) MacIntosh. She grew up in Dominion and in her late teens, she moved to the USA. A few years lataer she returned to Dominion, married Adrian, raising their family on Neville Street, until the late 50's, when they moved to Toronto. She was very pround of her Scottish heritage and Cape Breton roots. Any news from her old home town, sparked her interest and was the topic of discussion up until her final days. Sandy passed away on Thursday, March 5, 2009, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, in Sydney. Born in Antigonish, he was the son of the late Alex and Leta (McAulay) Farquhar. Sandy was employed at Sydney Steel prior to joining the military from 1956 to 1970, serving in Gyprus and the Northwest Territories. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Black Watch. He completed his service in Base Gagetown. He was employed at the Radar base until his retirement. He had a great love of mustang cars and was the only one in Nova Scotia in the mid 60's to own a Shelby Mustang. He will be sadly missed by his best friend and companion of many years. Born November 17, 1941 in Lower Montague, PEI, he grew up in Big Glace Bay and moved to Toronto as a young man. He was predeceased by paarents, Elizabeth (Betty Henderson) and Robert (Bob) Patton, sisters and brothers-in-law, Josephine and Jack Henderson, Edith and Jack Kendall, Evelyn and Ezra Slack, Percy Williams, Major Rabey and Nick Rachey. He is survived by his daughter, Dawn, grandchildren Mathew, Jonathon and Nicole, brother Seward Patton, sisters, Aileen Williams, Violet Rabey, Louise Rachey, Ellen (Chuck) Simms, Gertrude (Carl) MacIntyre, Buelah (Jim) McInnes and Roberta (John) Garcia, an extended family, and many good friends. John was a strong, proud man who lived life fully and delighted in providing for his friends and family. He will be deeply missed. Cremation has already taken place.
