Hello Bob; The best place to start is with this list, if it is CapeBreton folks you are looking for. Name the couple, their children (their spouces if known), last known place of residence and any pertinent details, to help identify them. More than likely someone may have them in their data base, know of them or someone who does. Or you maybe lucky and one of the living descendants does genealogy and is on the list. I don't know whether you have tried this or not, but I take a surname and work backwards yr by yr from 1957, and go through the death records on line at NSARMS. I usually limit it to the last county the family resided in, and than work out from there, to other counties. By doing so I have discovered children I was not aware of. A wife's full name, when I've only had her first or surname. A link to other family members when it is a niece, nephew or brother/sister-in-law who were the informant for the death record. Its really great to use for those old time obits on the CapeBreton Genweb, http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nscpbret/CBIOBITS/qryindex.htm where they say " Mr/Mrs. So & So died, [day, month, yr] and he/she is survived by husband/wife, 4 sons and 3 daughters." Its not so hot for the years 1908-1918, as very little information is given other than birth date (not always included or correct), residence (community), married (no spouce's name), cause. You pretty well have to be very familiar with a particular family, to pin the person down to being someone you are looking for. Unless the old obit gives a little more detail, other than name rank and serial number. City directories, old phone books, voters lists, are useful if you have access to them or know someone who does. As I know you are looking for Gillis, I will give you the names of Gillis, in the GlaceBay district who had a phone in 1935. GILLIS, ANGUS J, Dominion # 1 ..... 619-31 GILLIS, JAMES, 9 Berkely .....523-1 GILLIS, JOSEPH, 35 South ..... 57-2 GILLIS, MALCOLM, 33 Water .....175-2 GILLIS, N J, 137 Main ..... 139 GILLIS, ROD, 71 Union .....753-2 GILLIS, SARAH Mrs. 16 Concord .....828 You can write to a historical society in the area where the family lived. They may know the family or where they went if they left the area. Post your query on a 'Surname' Genforum and a surname mailing list. I don't know if you are a member of CBGHA or not. If not you might consider joining, http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nscbgha/JOIN.html and posting your family/or query there. Another avenue to try is to write to the Cape Breton Post, and ask them to post your query in 'letters to the editor.' Many of us forget about newspapers, with the internet being so convenient. Yet many still do not own a computer or want access to them. And of course you have this list archives http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/index/NS-CAPE-BRETON/ and may discover a posting related to information you are looking for. Good luck and Happy hunting Juanita MacDonald ----- Original Message ----- From: "bob gillis" <robertgillis@verizon.net> To: "Cape Breton" <ns-cape-breton@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, March 03, 2009 9:48 AM Subject: [NS-CB] Finding Descendants of People after 1911 > Is there any way at the present time to find descendants of couples and > children that are in the 1911 Census that I do not find a marriage, > death or obituary for? > bob gillis
