Ryan, Donald Alfonse - published March 17, 2009 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Mr. Thomas James Matheson, Glace Bay at Glace Bay , Nova Scotia , Canada - Thomas James 'Jimmy' Matheson, 75, of New Aberdeen, passed peacefully into eternal rest on Tuesday, March 17, 2009, at Harbourstone Enchanced Care, Sydney, after a lengthy illness. Born in Glace Bay, Jimmy was the son of the late Murdoch and Ida (Ward) Matheson. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Church, Glace Bay. Jimmy served with the United Nations Peace Force as a dental technician and visited many parts of the world on the Destroyer, Quebec. After service in Korea, he returned to Canada where he was struck down by illness which he endured until his death, ending a promising career in the military. Jimmy is survived by his siblings, Delores Young, Glace Bay, Cammie (Barry Gillis), North Sydney, Ethel (John Tennant), Ottawa, Maria (James Tutty), Lower Sackville, Bernadette (Bill Dixon), Stouville, Ont., Ida (Ron Winstanley), Oxbridge, Ont., Beverly, Toronto, Wayne (Josie), Ottawa, Reeves (Valerie), Halifax, Bernard (Lois), Mississauga, Ray (Judy), Chatham, Ont., and several nieces and nephews. Jimmy was predeceased by brothers, Gerald Robert, Vincent Paul, John Owen and Harold 'Sonny'. Cremation has taken place at the request of his family. A celebration of Jimmy's life will be held at a later date in St. John's Church, Glace Bay, followed by interment in the parish cemetery. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the V.J. Jessie Charlotte MacDonald, 93, Howie Centre.Pugwash - Jessie Charlotte MacDonald, 93, of Howie Centre/Pugwash, passed away March 7, 2009, in East Cumberland Lodge, Pugwash. Born in St. George's Channel, Richmond Co., she was a daughter of the late James and Annie "Morrison" Calder. Jessie loved to quilt, crochet, knit, do needlepoint and play cards. Surviving are her daughter, Anne (Allison) Gillis, Pugwash; grandchildren, Kerry (Peter) Turner, Tantallon; Leigh (Paton Francis) Gillis, Bedford; great-grandchildren, Jenna, Allie and Brennan Turner; brother, William "Billy" Calder, St. George's Channel; sisters, Margaret Warren, Vernon, B.C., Christine Wheaton, Halifax; many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents she was predeceased by her husband, Donald "Dan" MacDonald; son, Hugh Ian MacDonald; brother, John Calder. Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday, March 20, in Sydney Memorial Chapel, 49 Welton St., Sydney, from where the funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 21, Rev. Dana Feltmate officiating with a reception to follow in Memorial Chapel. Burial in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens at a later date. Family flowers only. Dad was born in Canso, NS, on Nov 24, 1922, son of Daniel Martin and Florence (DeCoste) Ryan. He was predeceased by his parents, as well as by his brothers, Pat and Tom, and his sisters, Freda MacInnis, Doris Asaph and Irene Malcolm. Dad was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He will be deeply missed by his wife of 61 yrs, Dolanna (Dollie) (MacLeod) Ryan of Alderwood, his children, Francis (Elizabeth) of North River Bridge, Donald (Miriam), Keith (Mary), Eileen (Colin), Walter (Georgina), all of Baddeck, Robert (Florence) of Hunter's Mountain, John of Sydney, Florence (Hughie) of Antigonish, as well as by special niece, Sr. Anne Malcolm of Rogersville, NB, and special family friend, Carmen DeGruchy of Antigonish, grandchildren, Daniel, Seamus, Dennis, Donald, Robbie, Kelsey, Brennan, Zackery, Shauna, Hanah, and Ryan. Dad was a veteran of the Second World War, having served four years in the Royal Canadian Navy, mostly on the corvette Shediac, completing 80 convo escorts, the majority in the North Atlantic. He was a proud and active member of Branch 53, Royal Canadian Legion. Recently, he was awarded the legion's 60 year pin, as well as a Nova Scotia Democracy 250 Certificate. He was a member of the Baddeck Volunteer Fire Department from 1959 to 1968. In addition to his lifetime involvement with the legion, he enjoyed reading, writing poetry, home brewing, following current events, cooking, working at the firewood, spending time in his fishing shack and family Christmas parties. Providing for his family, was always a priority and a source of pride. He worked as a woodsman, truck driver, fisherman. janitor, legion manager, maintenance man, garbage collector, bottle exchange owner, manager of the Baddeck legions' outdoor rink and keeper of the Kidston Island Lighthouse, these often in the multitude of combinations. His work took him from the Canso Causeway to Pinaude's Boatyard, to Victoria County Memorial Hospital, to Royal Canadian Legion Branch 53 and on the Bras d'Or Lakes. Visitation will be at MacAskill's Funeral Home, Baddeck, on Tursday, March 19, 2009, from 2-9 pm, with the Royal Canadian Legion service at 7 pm. Funeral serice will be held on Friday, March 20, 2009, at St. Micael's Catholic Curch at 11 am with Fr. Norman MacPhee officiatig. Burial to follow at St. Michael's Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice/Palliative Care, Victoria County Memorial Hospital, alderwood Rest HOme or a chairty of one's choice.
