Hi All, I am still picking away at my brick wall. I am putting some names out there to see if they ring a bell with anyone or if anyone has them in their tree. I also have questions I hope someone can answer . First : I have a great grandmother Nellie Sutherland who was brought up in Louisburg with Murdock David (son of Angus and Sarah) and Florah ( dau of Norman and Jessie Beaton) Cameron . Nellie claimed to be a home child .Her obit states the same .She died in Jan. of 1964 . But nothing shows up on her as a home child. I also cannot find out anything from local historians in Louisburg on the Cameron's. Nellie also had a twin sister Winifred who was placed with the Cameron's. It is like Winifred never existed. Nellie's children where taken by Children's Aid in Oct. 1933 and placed in Bairncroft . We just received what little Children's Aid had on the family. It states that Nellie Cameron Sutherland was a home girl from Halifax and she was 39 years old in 1933 when she lost the children. Other facts on Nellie: She was never married to her children's father(s??) She lived with Malcolm MacDonald on Alexandria Street and also in New Boston. She worked at a restaurant on Charlotte Street Sydney. Different birth dates from 1885-1894. The 1901 census states she was born in N.S. She was a twin and gave birth to twins. The Children's Aid file also states that Nellie lived with Hugh Morrison in Hillside Mira for 17 years and they had 6 children . The file mentions that Hugh's wife lived in Western Canada with her children . Hugh married in Jan of 1891 Sarah (MacKeigan) MacLellan widow of Archie MacLellan . Sarah and Archie had 3 boys ,Alex and Dan born 1881- twins and John born in 1883. Hugh and Sarah had one daughter Mary in Dec of 1891 . In 1901 Hugh, Sarah and their children are living in Sydney. In 1911 Hugh in back in Hillside Mira with his elderly parent's, no wife or daughter. We didn't have any idea what happened to Sarah and Mary till now. Sarah's parent's were John and Christy MacKeigan. Archie MacLellan's parent's were Alexander and Jessie MacLellan from Mira Big Ridge. Hugh Morrison's parent's were Ewen and Jessie (MacDonald ) Morrison . I need a fresh perspective. First what do you make of a "Home girl from Halifax" ? Do you think she was an orphan ? Or were the twins illegitimate and the facts about their birth hidden? I think Sutherland was probably their real surname .Does anyone with knowledge of Sutherland's have a birth or history of twin births between 1885 -1894? Does anyone know of any connections or marriages between the Cameron's ,MacDonald's ,Sutherland's that can account for Nellie and Winifred? In the 1881 census there are two Sutherland girls in Gabarus with the same birth year. There Mom was widowed . I wondered about them just because of the possibility they were twins and there were many family connections between Gabarus and Louisburg . I also was wondering , does anyone know or have information in there tree on what happened to Sarah MacKeigan MacLellan Morrison and her sons Dan ,Alex and John and her and Hugh's daughter Mary? Did they go to Western Canada as the Children's Aid records suggest. I also was wondering if anyone knew how to or where could you search family court records? Or magistrate record 's for Cape Breton County? Thank you all for your time, Arlene _________________________________________________________________ Share photos with friends on Windows Live Messenger http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9650734

Hi Arlene; There were two children, Winnie & Nellie [no surname given which is indicated by a stroke] age 1,b. N.S., living in the 'Infant home' run by Bessie J McKeen & her sister Christiana MacDonald in Halifax on the 1891 census. It is unkn where either of their parents were born. There was no indication that these two children were twins, as Winnie's religion was listed as Presb. and Neillie's was Baptist. Makes you wonder if they were just abandoned on the doorstep? The 1891 census page is 11, dist # 33 Halifax City ward 1d. There was no search results to show any twin sisters by the name of Winnie & Nellie (also various spellings) under the name Sutherland, Cameron or Mac/Mc Donald. If the children in fact were born after 1891, than they would not appear until the 1901 census and if I am reading correctly you have them on the 1901 in CapeBreton. (?) In which case, if they were born in Halifax and in a home for 'unwed mothers' you would need to discover which home it was. If they were wards of the court, than there should be some record of their existence in Halifax from the time of their birth to their adoption and coming to Cape Breton. As for a 'Home' girl being from Halifax, most definitely. A 'Home' is a shelter for the care of orphaned, needy, and the infirmed besides all the other meanings we apply to the word 'home'.
