Sobol, Janet - published March 08, 2009 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Eric Beresford, 76, Glace Bay - Mr. Eric Bersford, 76, Glace Bay died on March 7, 2009, at Glace Bay Health Care Complex. Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Albert and Edith Beresford of Glace Bay. He was employed at the British-Canadian Co-op Ltd, Hopkins Transport, Turner's Transfer, and Nova Scotia Power Corporation. He always referred to himself as a truck driver. He was a member of St. Mary's Anglican CHurch, the Thistle Lodge No. 36, and the Tyrian Youth Lodge No. 45. He is survived by sisters, Ethel and Audrey (Bill), and brothers, Roy, Billy and George (Norma). He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother-in-law, Andre' Charlebois and his sister-in-law Irene. A masonic service will be held on Wednesday at 1 pm at Patten Funeral Home, 71 Union Street, Glace Bay. A funeral service will be held at 2 pm at St. Mary's Anglican Church, Marconi Street, Glace Bay, with Rev Vernon Reid officiating. Internment at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Palliative Care, the Thistle Lodge No. 36, 2641 Port Morien Highway, Port Morien, NS, B1b-1C5, or to a charity of one's choice. online condolences may be e-mailed to patten@seaside.ns.ca -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Eva Mary Kaifosh, New Waterford - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Eva Mary Kaifosh on Monday, March 2, 2009, at the Seaview Manor, Glace Bay. Eva resided at Seaview Manor and was formerly of Catherine Street, New Waterford. Born in Reserve, Jan 13, 1912, she was a daughter of the late Emerance and Frederick David. Eva was determined to succeed even as a young lady. As a teenager, she started a candy store with one plate of fudge that she had made. A local supplier noted her determination and convinced her to take an assortment of stock on credit. Eva went on to become his top seller of ice cream by the scoop. John Kaifosh, a young man with a liking for ice cream by the scoop, frequented her store. One scoop led to another and Eva married John in 1930. After Eva and John married, she continued to gathaer local produce when in season for which she baked dessert waffles, pancakes, and pies for her family and the ladies at the former Scotchtown Mission. Eva was a member of Calvin United Church, New Waterford. Eva was predeceased by her husband, John Kaifosh (1988) and is survived by her son David Kaifosh and her daughter, Elsie Nagy. Nana will be missed by her grandchildren, Fred Kaifosh, Deborah (nee Kaifosh) Koivu, Sandrea Kaifosh, Mike Nagy, Ken Nagy, Tim Nagy and her 13 great grandchildren. In respect of Eva's wishes, a private visitation will be held at V.J. McGillivary Funeral Home, 380 Smith Street, New Waterford. A funeral service will take place on Wednesday, March 11, 2009 at 10 am in Calvin United Church with Rev Duncan Roach officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney. To Daisy Kaifosh, for frequently visiting Nana and making her last years more comfortable, we express our deepest appreciation. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Emerson Roper, 86, North Sydney - Mr. Emerson Roper, 86, of North Sydney and formerly of Shore Road, Sydney Mines, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on March 7, 2009. He was the son of the late Hugh P. and Alice (MacLennan) Roper. He was a member of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 8, Sydney Mines. Educated in the Sydney Mines school system, he immediately joined the armed forces and served overseas in the Second World War with the 65th Tank Transport Battalion. He was later employed with the federal government's UI department from where he retired after 35 yrs of service. Emerson was a devoted family man and enjoyed many summers at Lake Ainslie. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 yrs, Jessie (Wilson), his daughters, Ann Ledgerwood of Charlottetown, PEI, Lynn (Kenzie) of Sydney, and his son, Ian (Chris) of Halifax. Also surviving are grandchildren, Sean (Michelle) Ledgerwood of Charlottetown, Jennifer Steward of Surrey, BC, and tacha Reed of Halifax, great grandchildren, Hanna and Fox Emerson Close and Kaitlyn and Emma Ledgerwood, and his sister, Louise of Mississauga, Ontario. He was predeceased by his brother, Arthur and his infant great grandson, Avery Close. A special thank you is extended to Dr. J. Kirkpatrick, VON Palliative Care and staff of Northside At HomeCare Service for the exceptional care provided during Emerson's illness. There will be no visitation. Funeral services will be held in St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church at 2 pm on Tuesday with Rev Marion Barkley MacKay officiating. Burial under the direction of Fillmore & Whitman Funeral Home, will be in Brookside Cemetery. As memorials, donations may be made to a charity of one's choice. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Therese Wierbiski, Cheticamp - Therese Margaret Wierbiski, Feb 16, 1926 - March 7, 2009, passed away peacefully at the Sacred Heart Community Health Centre, Cheticamp, after a long battle following open-heart surgery. During the past few months, her life ws filled with many challenges but she faced them with courage and faith, always surrounded by her family, friends and so many others who helped her through this difficult time. Therese was the daughter of the late Pat (a'Joe) and Minnie Aucoin of Saint-Joseph-du-Moine. She was the beloved wife of the late Walter Wierbiski. She leaves behind brothers and sisters, Philias (Laura) Aucoin of Montreal, Gerard (Therese) Aucoin of Saint-Joseph-du-Moine, Elizabeth Poirier of Waltham, Hermine Chiasson of Oakville, Ontario, Celina Aucoin of Saint-Joseph-du-Moine, and Catherine (Joseph) of Saint-Joseph-du-Moine. As well, she leaves many special nieces nad nephews who will cherish fond memories of her. Some especially remember the excitement from visits with her and Walter, wonderful times spent together. For over 50 years, Therese worked in the Sydney area for Dr. Clem Young and his wife Margaret, as their housekeeper. She helped raise their family and became like a second mother to their five childen. She leaves behind her extended family Margaret of Sydney, Paul (Donna) of Ontario, Brian of Halifax, David of Sydney, and Catherine of Halifax. She was predeceased by her husband, Walter Wierbiski, brothers, Freddie Aucoin and Leo Aucoin. Therese was known for her kindness and her love of life - joie de vivre. Upon retirement and selling her house in Sydney, she moved back home and resided at the Bellevue Apartments in Grand-Etang. Her door was always open for fmily and friends. Still very active during her golden years, she especially enjoyed her daily walks, driving her car, taking her sisters out for afternoon strolls, and stopping by for tea at Tim Hortons. She was a member of St. Joseph's Parish, Saint-Joseph-du-Moine, the St. Joseph Church Choir, Les Dames de Sainte Anne and the Nouveaux Horizons St. Joseph (Seniors Club). Visitation will be on Monday, March 9, 2009 from 2-4 & 7-9 pm at the Cheticamp Funearl Home. The funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, March 10, 2009, at 3 pm, at St Joseph Church, Saint-Joseph-du-Moine, with Fr. Peter LeBlanc officiating. He was the son of the late Charles and Ann (Walker) Smith. He was employed with S&L Railway for over 25 yrs. He owned and operated Pat's Convenience Store and Harbourview Guest Home Ltd, in Whitney Pier. He was also employed at the Cape Breton Regional Housing. Don loved to hunt and fish and spend time in the country at New Campbellton. He is survived by his wife, Geraldine (Gerry) Pike, son Richard of New Campbellton, daughters Donna (Keith) Wall of New Campbellton, and Tara (Leonard) Bergmane of Ottawa. Don is survived by his precious grandchildren, Cory Wall, Anabella and Douglas Bergmane-Smith. Also survived by his siter, Linda (Wayne) Hayes of Sydney. Don was predeceased by his parents, sister Colleen Bunce and brother Melvin. According to his wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Tuesday, March 10 at 2 pm, with Rev Wade Reppert of First United Church officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Nova Scotia Heart & Stroke or Kidney Foundations. Lunch will be served following the service at Sydney Memorial Chapel. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MacDonald, Ronald Francis - Ronald (Rannie), beloved husband of Maxine, passed away peacefully on March 5, 2009, at the age of 82 years. Born in Cape Breton on March 2, 1927, to the late Peter R. and Elizabeth (Burton) MacDonald. Rannie "Beaver" worked for CNR for forty-six years. He was a proud railroader who was well respected for his work ethic and easy going ways. Ronald was an honest man who loved family, friends, music, card games and a good joke. He was athletic (hockey and baseball) in his younger years and in later years, enjoyed being a sports fan and proudly supported his grandchildren's activities. Ronald is survived by his wife of fifty-four years, Maxine (Richardson), two sons, Darren (Louise) and Sheldon, three daughters, Debbie (Frank) Muller, Kim (Al Ferguson) and Michelle (deceased in 1970, six grandchildren, Lauren, Mark, Brittany and Jenna Muller, Mitchel and Kristin Ferguson. Ronald was predeceased by brothers Clifford, Jim, George and Bobbie MacDonald, Joe and Raymond Collier, sisters Julia, Eunice and Arthena. He is survived by Donnie (Barb) Collier, Dellie Dove, and Lorraine Schofield. Ronald and Maxine enjoyed many road trips with John and Lois (Richardson) Dunn of Sydney, NS. Dad was proud of his Cape Breton heritage, and moved with Maxine to Calgary in 2000 to be close to his family. Until his passing, he resided at The Villas, where mom & dad made wonderful new friends. A funeral mass will be held at Ascension Roman Catholic Parish, 1100 Berkshire Boulevard, NW Calgary on Tuesday, March 10, 2009 at 1:30 pm. Born in Reserve Mines, he was a son of the late "Red" George and Marion (Martin) McDonald. He resided in the Kennedy Complex with very supportive neighbours. Gary, in earlier years, served as a regular member with the Canadian Armed Forces. He is survived by his brother, George of Sydney, his uncle, Harold "Chip" McDonald of Reserve Mines, and many other relatives and close friends. Cremation has taken place under the cae and direction of Curry's Funeral Home, Glace Bay. A private burial will take place at a later date.
