Pottie, Henry E - published February 19, 2009 ___________________________________________________________________________ Harry Balcom, Westmount Born in Paradise, Nova Scotia, Canada, - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Harry Franklyn Balcom, 91, of Westmount. Frank passed away peacefully, at home, on Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2009, with his son, John by his side. Born in Paradise, Annapolis County, he was the son of the late Harry and Emily (Ernst) Balcom. A veteran of the Second World War, Frank served overseas with the Royal Canadian Air Force and was a former member of the RCMP. In 1950, he moved to Cape Breton with his family as field manager of the Fuller Brush Company. Frank later worked as a sales representative for Canadian Scholarship Trust Plan and Heritage Scholarship Foundation. He was an avid hunter and salmon fisherman. He enjoyed gardening and loved his raspberry patch. Frank was a former member of St. Aidan’s Anglican Church, Westmount, a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 126 and a 50 year member of the East Gate Lodge # 127. Surviving are his four children, Joan Gillis, Halifax, Ann (Dave) Benedict, Sydney Forks, John, Westmount and Rick (Rena), Shelburne; grandchildren, Paul, John D. (Michelle), Kent (Robyn), Cheryl, Ryan and Brendan; great-grandchildren, Hayley, Archie, Royce, Hana and Austin. He is also survived by his brother, Edward (Hattie) Balcom of Paradise. Frank was predeceased by his wife, Betty (October 2008); brothers, Eugene, Russ, Aub, Don, Norm and Al; granddaughter, Nancy Nicole; son-in-law, Danny Gillis. Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Sunday, Feb. 22 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., with a Masonic service at 6:45 p.m. A funeral service will be held at the Church of Christ the King on Monday, Feb. 23 at 11 a. m., with Rev. Fred Rhymes officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of one’s choice. Condolences may be sent to the family at sydneymemorialchapel@ns.sympatico.ca ___________________________________________________________________________ Judith Hogan, New Waterford Born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada, - Judy Hogan, 64, of Thompson Street, New Waterford, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2009, at home. Born in Glace Bay, she was a daughter of the late Thomas Owen ‘Ted’ and Eva (Martin) Warner. Judy was very active in the community and offered her volunteer services for several charities over the years. She was a former member of the Kinettes and active president of the K40 and the St. Agnes, St. Vincent de Paul Society, New Waterford. Surviving are her children, Paul (Evelyn), Glace Bay, James, Red Deer, Alta., Ralph (Noreen), Mississauga, Ont., Francie, Red Deer, Alta., Lynda (Wayne) Webber, Whitehorse, YT; brothers, Gerry (Mary), Mira, Ralph (Karen), Brooklyn, N.S.; sister, Lynda (Kevin) Murrant, Glace Bay; grandchildren, Samantha, Eric, Austin; great grandchild, Madison. Judy was predeceased by her companion, Jerry Hogan. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25 at the Salvation Army Citadel, New Waterford, with Captains Cyril and Eliza Keats officiating. Online expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.vjmcgillivray.ca. ___________________________________________________________________________ Sidney Ingram, North Sydney Born in Burgeo, Newfoundland, Canada, - It is with heavy hearts we announce the sudden passing of Sidney Ingram, age 76, of Georges River, on Thursday, Feb. 19, 2009 at the Northside General Hospital. Born in Burgeo, Nfld., he was the son of the late Fred and Fanny (Harris) Ingram. He was a retired fisherman, who was formerly employed at H.B. Nickerson & Sons and later as the skipper of his own boat, the Derek & Sheri. Sid, a devoted Christian, was known by many for his strong faith, love for God and kindness to others. He was a member of the Pentecostal Church most of his life and attended Grace Fellowship Church in Sydney Mines. Surviving are his daughters and sons, Cindy (Paul) Hawkins, Lawrencetown, Paul (Rebecca) Ingram, Lower Sackville, Cherri Ingram, Eastern Passage and Joel (Cristen) Ingram, Lower Sackville; his grandchildren, Crystal and John Hawkins, Jessica, Jeremy and Shannon Ingram, Logan and Jamie Lee Bissett and Brennan, Nicholas, Logan, Caleb and Joshua Ingram. Also surviving are his brothers, Fred Ingram, North Sydney, Howard (Freda) Ingram, Port Aux Basques, his twin brother Edward ‘Ned’ (Stella) Ingram, North Sydney and his sisters, Phyllis Eccleston, Michigan, Marie Keeping, North Sydney and brother-in-law Gordon Cluett, North Sydney and also his dear friend Marleen Williams. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Jessie (Cluett) Ingram; two brothers, George and Winston Ingram; brothers-in-law, Arthur Keeping and John Eccleston and sister-in-law, Susan Cluett. Visitation for Sid will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today (Friday) in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday from Grace Fellowship Church, Sydney Mines with Pastor Richard Barnes officiating and burial in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney. Online condolences may be sent to info@wjdooley.com. ___________________________________________________________________________ Ruth Kelly, Middle Musquodoboit Born in New Waterford, Nova Scotia, Canada, - Ruth Elizabeth Kelly, 85 of North Sydney and more recently of Braeside Home for Special Care, Middle Musquodoboit, passed away February 18, 2009, in Braeside. Born in New Waterford, she was a daughter of the late Frederick and Jean (Murphy) Gregor. In her younger years, she had received a business certificate from Mt. Allison University as a secretary, but chose not to work outside the home. She enjoyed the outdoors, especially walking and skating, had great interest in artistic painting and was an avid reader and bridge player. Surviving are son, Harry (Valda); granddaughters, Alanna and Allison; great grandson, Cameron and sister, Shirley Harvey. She was predeceased by brothers, Harry and Fred; sisters, Vera and Doris. Cremation has taken place. A funeral service will be held in St. James United Church, Upper Musquodoboit, at a later date. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney. Memorial donations may be made to St. James United Church, or a charity of choice. Arrangements are under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. ___________________________________________________________________________ Henry Pottie, Glace Bay Born in Hawker, Richmond County, Nova Scotia, Canada, - It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce the peaceful passing of Henry Pottie, on Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2009, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex, surrounded by his family. Born in Hawker, Richmond County, he was the son of the late Fred and Lillian (Rhyno) Pottie. Henry was a resident of Taigh Na Mara, Glace Bay. He was a veteran of the Korean War and later was employed with many companies in Ontario before retiring. Henry is survived by his daughter, Charlotte ‘Cookie’ (Fred) Boudreau, Hamilton, Ont.; three grandchildren; as well as two brothers, Raymond (Tena), Westmount, Arthur (Marg), Chilliwack. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his stepmother, Dorothy (Sullivan) Pottie and brother, Amedie (Sheila) Pottie. Visitation will take place Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009 from 7-9 p.m. and Sunday Feb. 22, 2009 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 23, 2009 at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home Chapel. Interment to take place in Holy Rosary Cemetery, Westmount.
