Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Monday and funeral service 2 p.m. Tuesday, all in the Mattatall-Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young St., Truro. Rev. Gary Yetman will officiate with a reception to follow in the funeral home. Burial will take place at a later date in Middle Road cemetery, Debert. Born in North Sydney he was a son of the late William and Olive (Voutier) Hatcher. Austin was employed for over 40 years with H.B. Nickerson and Sons, maintenance department and he enjoyed very much the camaraderie of his friends and co-workers at the fish plant. He made several trips to Halifax to visit his son and family, who enjoyed and appreciated the time they spent together. Austin often spoke about the highlights of a recent vacation he spent with his brother Harold in Newfoundland. Austin was a life-long member of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church. Surviving are his son, Austin (Susan McCowan) Hatcher, Halifax; three grandchildren, Felicia, Kira and Vance; by a great grandson, Darian; one brother, Wilson (Doris) Hatcher, Georgetown, Ont.; two sisters, Eileen Hatcher, Brampton, and Beryl (Robert) Fiegehen, Port Dover, Ont. Austin was predeceased by his wife, Ann (Ginter) Hatcher, one daughter, Linda, two brothers, Frank and Harold Hatcher, one sister, Shirley. Visitation will be held 2-4 p.m. Tuesday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral service will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday from St. John the Baptist Anglican Church with Rev. Gloria McClure Fraser officiating. Online condolences may be sent to info@wjdooley.com. ___________________________________________________________________________ Henry Alexander 'Beer' MacKinnon, Glace Bay Born in New Waterford, Nova Scotia, Canada, - It is with great sadness, we announce the death of Henry Beer MacKinnon, who passed away quietly at the Glace Bay Hospital on Friday, Feb. 20, 2009. Born in New Waterford, he was the son of the late Neil and Mary (Gillis) MacKinnon. Henry will be fondly remembered by all who knew him, as he touched so many with his sincere good nature and storytelling. In New Waterford, he was known as the social taxi driver who owned and operated Service Taxi. Formerly a resident of New Waterford, Henry resided in Glace Bay over the past several years with his lifetime soulmate, Grace Read. Henry played an important role in the lives of Graces two children, Bobby Read and the recently deceased, Lynda Strosja along with their children, Beverly, John, Billy, Robert Read and Angela, Travis and Shane Strojsa. Eleven great-grandchildren enjoyed Henrys warmth and tales from near and afar. Henry is survived by his last remaining sibling, Theresa (Sharkey MacDonald), New Waterford. Henry was predeceased by his siblings, Flora Ryan, Anna McNeil, Bernie and Lawrence MacKinnon. He always shared a special bond with his brother Lawrence and if their combined stories could have been documented it would for certain be on the best-seller list. Visitation will be held Wednesday, Feb. 25 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. The funeral mass will be celebrated Thursday at 10 a.m. in the Parish of St. Leonard, St. Michaels Church, River Ryan. Interment will be held at a later date in St. Marys Anglican Cemetery, Glace Bay. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Henrys name to the Breast Cancer Society in memory of Lynda Strojsa. Visitation will be held in the family residence with the time to be announced. The funeral mass will be held in the Parish of St. Leonard, St. Michael Church. McGillivray Funeral Home in New Waterford and will be announced at a later date. ___________________________________________________________________________ Mr. Edward Matheson, Whycocomagh Born in East Lake Ainslie, Nova Scotia, Canada, February 21, 2009 - Alexander Edward Matheson, 92, Whycocomagh Portage, died Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009, in Alderwood Rest Home, Baddeck. Born in East Lake Ainslie, he was a son of the late Dan and Margaret Mary (MacLean) Matheson. Edward was a retired farmer. He was a former employee of Devco Oyster Farm, Estmere; a former employee of Little Narrows Gyspum and a member of Little Narrows Presbyterian Church. He leaves to mourn three nephews, four nieces and two cousins. Edward was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was predeceased by half brothers, Farquer, Alex and Murdoch, half sister, Christena. Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Whycocomagh. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday from Little Narrows Presbyterian Church, Rev. Adam Lees officiating. Burial in Little Narrows Cemetery at a later date.
