Cape Breton Deaths February 03, 2009 Tuesday Mary Victoria (McKinnon) Burton 92, Sydney Mines - After being with us for 92 years, Mary left us suddenly on Jan. 31, 2009, to join God, and her husband John Thomas Burton, who was killed in action Aug. 9, 1944. Mary also joins her father, Edward McKinnon, mother, Ellen Booker (Alderson) McKinnon, brothers, Charles, Edward, John, Neil (Eleanor Robertson), George (Muriel Fifoot) and Alvin, sisters, Isabel (Robert Potter) and Bernadette (John LeBlanc), her son, Daniel and her infant daughter, Mary. Mary was born in Sydney Mines, Sept. 19, 1916, and was baptized in Immaculate Conception parish. She was 16 when she graduated from Grade 12, Sydney Mines High School, her first job being one of the first clerks for the new Princess Credit Union, salary $ 0.00. Mary was involved with the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 8 Ladies Auxiliary. She spent the last of her working years at the Northside General Hospital, in the laundry department. During her employment with the Northside General Hospital, Mary thoroughly enjoyed representing her local union at the Cape Breton Labour Council. Mary was an active member of the Seniors and Pensioners Club, Sydney Mines. She lived her faith and attended both Immaculate Conception parish and St. Pius X parish. Mary spent the last years of her life at the Miner's Memorial Manor, where she was affectionately known as 'Little Mary' by the staff, whose kindness and care allowed Mary to enjoy life fully to the very end. Mary leaves to mourn her sons, John (Lorraine Boyd), Daryl (Wallina Finlayson), both of Sydney Mines, and Charles (Linda Porter), Ontario; her daughter, Ella Marie (William) Murphy, Ontario; sister, Juanita (Robert) MacDonald, Ottawa; brothers, William (Veronica), Ontario, and Leo (Marjorie MacDonald), Sydney Mines. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Darlene, Derrick, Vaughan, Sheldon, Blair, Glenn, Lisa, Chris, William, Johnny and Christeen; and many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Visitation for Mary Burton will be held in the J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines, Wednesday, Feb. 4 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral mass celebrating her life will take place Thursday at 10 a.m. in St. Pius X Church, Main Street, Sydney Mines, with Fr. J.J. MacDonald officiating. A reception will follow in the parish hall. Donations in Mary's memory may be made to the Alzheimers Group at the Miner's Memorial Manor in Sydney Mines. Online condolences may be sent to the family at jmjobesfuneralhome@ns.aliantzinc.ca. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Neil Charles MacKinnon 63, Sydney - With heartfelt sadness, we announce the passing of our wonderful father, grandfather, brother, uncle and brother-in-law, Neil Charles MacKinnon on Monday, Feb. 2, 2009. Born in Sydney, April 8, 1945, he was the son of the late Hughie and Mary MacKinnon. In his earlier years, Neil was a member of the Canadian Armed Forces. Later, he was employed at the Sydney Steel Plant in the blast furnace department, retiring due to ill health. Neil was predeceased by the 'love of his life,' Carol Ann (Foley) MacKinnon. They spent many happy times with family and friends at their Lake Ainslie trailer. Neil was a beloved father to his two children, son, Steven (Darlene) MacKinnon and daughter, Wanda (Kevin) Hewer. He was a cherished grandfather to his six grandchildren, Kevin Charles 'K.C.', Erica, Erin, Samantha, Kitana and Jonneil. He is survived by three sisters, Hazel (Wayne) Ellis, Mary (Paul) Ley and Patsy (Bernie) MacNeil; and his two brothers, Michael (Myrtle) MacKinnon and Peter (Debbie) MacKinnon. Neil is also survived by many nieces, nephews and extended family. The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the wonderful staff of MacDougall Court at the Harbourstone Enhanced Care Facility who treated Neil and the family with such care and respect. Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Wednesday, Feb. 4 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at Holy Redeemer Church, Thursday, Feb. 5 at 2 p.m., with Rev. Errol MacDonald officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Holy Redeemer Building Fund or the Alzheimers Society. Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Louis and Lillian (Churchill) Turner. Wayne enjoyed long walks, family gatherings and spending time with friends. He had a great sense of humour, kind to everyone and loved joking around with his brothers. He will be sadly missed by all. Wayne is survived by his longtime companion, Joan LeVangie; two sisters, Sandra Adams, North Sydney, Lana Nicholson, Victoria Road; three brothers, Louis (Colleen) Turner, Calvin Turner, both of Point Edward, Roy (Marnie), Mornville, Alta.; as well as several nieces and nephews. Born in Sydney Mines, a graduate of UCCB and Acadia University, he was the son of Agnes (Sutherland) McInnis and the late Larry McInnis. Sean is survived by his partner and best friend of 23 years, Debbie MacInnis, Halifax; his mother, Agnes McInnis, Sydney Mines; his sister, Anne Christene (Neil) Whitfield, Belleville; and brothers, Lawrence (Lynne), Markham, Brian (Gena), Kentville, and Terry (Cathy), Ottawa. Sean was a much-loved uncle who will be greatly missed by his nieces and nephew, Christian, Jim, Darby and Shane MacInnis, Markham, Morgan, Laura and Kyly Whitfield, Belleville, Erin and Sarah MacInnis, Kentville, Meghan and Bridget McInnis, Ottawa, and Keith Kowalczyk, Howie Centre. Anne was born in Whitney Pier, and was the daughter of the late Neil and Annie (Morrison) MacDonald. She was a registered nurse and worked in Montreal, California, Sydney and Halifax. She is survived by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by sisters, Margaret Wilson, Evelyn, Kaye MacKillop and Raye, brothers, Peter and John Allan (in infancy). She was the last surviving member of her family. Cremation has taken place. A private family memorial service will be held in Sydney at a later date. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Helen Gertrude Kincade 1920-2008 - Daughter of the late Walter and Alice Warren, Sydney. Passed away Jan. 28, 2009, in Vancouver, B.C. Helen was predeceased by her husband, Bob, two sisters, Vivian Gordon and Norma Reeves, both of Sydney. Helen is survived by her daughter, Alice Mann (Jim), nieces and nephews in Nova Scotia. Helen was a gracious lady loved by all. Helen is survived by her daughter Alice Mann (Jim); Peter, Katherine and Jennifer MacPhee and their families, and nieces and nephews across Canada. Helen was a gracious lady, loved by all who knew her. She was a bridge player extraordinaire, active in the Kappa Sigma fraternity Wives and the Naval Officers' Association Wives at HMCS Discovery. Knox United Church was her place of worship for 50 years. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm, Thursday, February 5, 2009 at Knox United Church, 5600 Balaclava Street, Vancouver.
