MacIntosh, Everett - published February 12, 2009 Donald Collier, North Sydney Born in Sydney Mines, Nova Scotia, Canada, - It is with heartfelt sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Donald 'Donnie' Collier, 80, beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother on Thursday, Feb. 12, 2009, at the Northside General Hospital. Born in Sydney Mines, he was the son of the late George and Annie (MacPhee) Collier. Donnie was employed for 25 years with the Woolco department store in Sydney River until his retirement. An Elder and faithful member of St. Matthew Wesley United Church, he was a member of the church choir and charter member of the Mens Club, and was also a former scout leader. His greatest joy was spending time with his family. Donnie is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Thelma (Riggs) Collier; one son, Ken (Thea) Collier, North Sydney; two daughters, Sandra (Roger) Gallant, Porters Lake, Judy (David) Horne, Dartmouth; his four grandchildren, Christopher (Danielle), Jeffrey, Theresa, Chantel; three great-grandchildren, Chantal, Brendan, Bentley; and one sister, Sheila (Charlie) Bashow, Timberlea. Visitation for Donnie will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Saturday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral service to be held 2 p.m. Sunday at St. Matthew Wesley United Church, North Sydney, with Rev. David Luker officiating. Burial will take place in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney. Online condolences may be sent to info@wjdooley.com. ___________________________________________________________________________ Eileen (Gouthro) Curtis, North Sydney Born in North Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada, - It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of our mother, grandmother and sister, Eileen Curtis age 90 a resident of the Northside Community Guest Home and formerly of Ingraham Street, on Thursday, Feb. 12, 2009, at the guest home. Born in North Sydney, she was the daughter of the late William and Theresa (MacLellan) Gouthro. Eileen was employed for many years with the cleaning staff at the Clansman Motel . She was a member of St. Joseph Church, North Sydney and the North Sydney Senior Citizens and Pensioners Club. She is survived by a daughter, Linda (Donald) Stewart, Merigomish, N.S.; a son, Patrick Curtis, Moncton; a stepdaughter, Bernice (Simon) Fraser, North Sydney; two stepsons, Bernie (Joan) Curtis, Ball's Creek, N.S., Bruce Curtis, Texas; a brother, Frank (Marion) Gouthro, North Sydney. Also surviving are nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Gordon L. Curtis; a son, Blaise; sister, Dorothy Lambert; two brothers, Aubrey Gouthro and Bert Gouthro in infancy; step-daughter, Shirley Cox. Visitation for Eileen will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today (Friday) in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral mass 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Church with Rev. Online condolences may be sent to info@wjdooley.com. ___________________________________________________________________________ George Dyer, Sydney Born in Cornerbrook, Newfoundland, Canada, - George Dyer, 78, MacLeod's Hill, Sydney, passed away Thursday, Feb. 12, 2009, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Cornerbrook, Nfld., George was the son of the late Henry and Mae (Decker) Dyer. He retired from Irving Oil Ltd. after 23 years of service. Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth (MacEachern); daughters, Linda and Susan (Wayne), Sydney and Evelyn (Marc), Quebec; sons, George (Melanie) and David (Debbie), Sydney; sisters, Beulah (Donald) MacRury, Sydney and Hazel (Jim) Walters, Bras D'or; brothers, Gordon (Bride), Sydney and Fred (Lillian), Halifax; 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. George was predeceased by his son, John and sisters, Evelyn and Ruby. Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Monday 7-9 p.m. A memorial service will be held in the chapel on Tuesday 2 p.m., with Pastor Ron Coole officiating. Formerly from Glace Bay, she leaves behind a sister, Jenny Munden; a brother, Arthur Berrigan and a niece, Genny Janes. Cremation has taken place. Interment will take place at a later date. ___________________________________________________________________________ Milledge 'Joe' Peach, Glace Bay Born in Port Morien, Nova Scotia, Canada, - We the family are broken hearted to announce the death of our dear husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend on Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2009 at Taigh Na Mara Veterans Home, his home away from home for the past three years. Joe, affectionately known as the "Mayor of Morien" was the son of the late Fredrick Peach and Susan (Martell) Peach of Port Morien. In his early years, he fished with his father before joining the Canadian Armed Services. Following the end of the Second World War, he returned to fishing and worked in construction with M.R. Chappell's in Sydney. In 1958 he began working with the Devco Railway (Bridge and Building Department) where he retired after 28 years. Joe's favorite pastime was singing at any and all occasions. He was honoured in 2004 by St. Paul's parish, Port Morien for over 50 years service as a choir member. He was an honorary member of the Coal Town Chorus and a member of the former "Morien Mello Tones." Joe was also an honorary member of Branch 55 Canadian Legion, Port Morien and a long time member of the Port Morien Red Cross. Left to mourn is his wife of 62 years, Joyce (Smith) Peach; his only daughter, Norma; sons, Claude (Donna), Millage (Phyllis), Stanley (Karen) and Fraser (Brenda); seven grandchildren, Tracey, Norma Dee, Terry Lee, Bonnie Jean, Jamie, Joel and Shea and 10 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by brothers, Melvin (Helen), Ted (Helen), Leroy (Barbara) and his sister, Alice; special God-daughter, Mary (Strutters) MacLeod and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Robert, Lewis, Gordon, George, Aulay and Turner; sisters, Frances, Sarah, Beatrice and step-granddaughter, Jackie Kennedy. Visitation will be held on Saturday, Feb. 14, 2009 from 2-4 p.m. and from 7-9 p.m. at Patten Funeral Home, Union Street, Glace Bay. Funeral service to be held on Sunday, Feb. 15, 2009 at 2 p.m., St. Paul's Anglican Church in Port Morien with Reverend Vernon Reid officiating. There will be a reception to follow at the Port Morien Legion, Community Center. Family flowers only, in lieu of flowers memorials may be placed in Joe's memory to St. Paul's parish, Port Morien, the DVA Veteran's Comfort Fund, or the Alzheimer's Society. ___________________________________________________________________________ Babs Rogers, Sydney Born in Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada, - Babs Rogers, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2009, at the Cove Guest home, Sydney. Born in Sydney in 1918, she was a lifelong resident of Westmount. Babs graduated from Sydney Academy and continued her education at Teacher's College. A teacher who dearly loved her students, she taught in Westmount and surrounding areas. Babs was a very active person, participating for most of her life in badminton, golf and many other sports. With her partner, Alaire Kerr, she won numerous badminton tournaments. In her later years, she enjoyed travelling with family and friends. Babs is survived by her devoted husband of 65 years, Paul; daughter, Lynne Dunn, Saint John, N.B.; son, John (Janice), Lunenburg, N.S.; daughter-in-law, Claire, Blackett's Lake; seven grandchildren, Natalie, Jill, Craig, Paul, Stephanie, Deanna and Adrian; four great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son, Dell; parents John and Lenora Jane MacPherson; sisters, Jessie, Abbie, Dot, Aggie and Beta. Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Friday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held in the chapel on Saturday 2 p.m., with Rev. Thomas Whent officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Society.
