Cape Breton Deaths February 04, 2009 Wednesday John (Jack) Tutty Glace Bay, N.S. 1917-2009 - With heartfelt sadness, we announce the passing of John Tutty, on Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2009, at home, surrounded by the love of his family. After 91 years of devotion to his family and friends, Jack passed as quietly and peacefully as he lived. Jack was born at Sydney, Dec. 13, 1917. He was the eldest son of James E. Tutty and Phoebe Sams. His proudest accomplishment was his service to his country as a member of the Cape Breton Highlanders overseas during the Second World War. Jack was a member of Branch 3 legion, Glace Bay. Over the years he participated during poppy campaigns, burial committee, social committee and as flag bearer for various ceremonies. Jack loved to dance and have a beer with his buddies at the legion. Jack was a very quiet and unassuming man of tremendous strength. In his youth he enjoyed the tranquility of fishing, hunting and gardening. Jack was truly a "Jack of all trades." He was a capable shoemaker, bricklayer, mechanic, carpenter, plumber and gardener. He took great pride in being self-sufficient and never wanted to be a burden on anyone. Jack had a wonderful sense of humour and his smile touched the hearts of all those who knew him. He was employed with Dominion Tar and Chemical, Hulford and as a miner with Devco. Jack worked in No. 4 (Caledonia), No. 20 and No. 26. Jack is survived by son, Jackie (Judy), Glace Bay; daughter, Brenda (James) Wheelhouse, Sydney; and three grandchildren, Brianna (Tutty), Michelle and Jonathon (Wheelhouse). Jack is also survived by sisters, Cora (Mrs. Harris Anthony), Ontario, and Shirley (Mrs. Gerald Brufatto), Glace Bay; and brother, Ken (Victoria), Glace Bay; plus numerous nieces and nephews. Full-time attendants also became family over the past three years, Sheila Parson, Jacqueline LeMoine, Gina Cox and Connie Carrigan. Jack will also be sadly missed by his two cats, K-2 and Hobo. Jack was predeceased by his soulmate of 59 years, Alice Adshade. Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by sisters, Olive (Mrs. Ruben MacIntosh), Dolina (Mrs. Austin Kiley), Rita (Mrs. Harold O'Keefe), Anna (Mrs. Headley Penny), and brother, Melvin. Visitation will take place at Patten Funeral Home, 71 Union St., Glace Bay, Thursday, Feb. 5 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held at St. Paul's Presbyterian Church, Glace Bay, Friday, Feb. 6 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Michael Henderson officiating. Interment at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens. By request, family flowers only. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul's Building Fund or charity of choice. Online condolences can be sent to patten@seaside.ns.ca. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Dolina 'Doll' MacAulay 83, Toronto - Dolina 'Doll' Louise MacAulay, died Jan. 31, 2009, in Toronto, Ont., at the age of 83. Doll was one of 19 children born to Dan K. MacLeod and Nellie MacLeod. She was born Aug. 28, 1925, in New Waterford. Dolina married Philip Daniel MacAulay in February 1949 to whom she bore four children. While pregnant (and with three small children), Dolina lost her husband and father in a tragic accident. She was left to raise her children alone, with the help of the good people of New Waterford, to whom she was forever grateful. She was predeceased by brothers, Chester, Alex and Frank (among others) and survived by sister, Mary, brother, Russell (Nipper), nieces and nephews, Shelly, Kenny, Russell, Danny, Dorothy, Florence, Alex, Lucy, Kao, Loraine, Heidi, Melissa and Russell. Doll is survived by her children, Daniel and wife, Esther, Chester and wife, Hanna, Louise and husband, Tom and Philip and wife, Susan, Norma, Mickey; her grandchildren, Kim, Kyle, Michael, Darryl, Christopher, Stephen, Christopher, Daniel and Heather; great-grandchildren, Lukas, Kayla, Shauna, Briana, Devon, Kiarra, Kolton, Austin and Conner; and her cat, Peaches. Dolina was an exceptional person in every way, a woman who by all accounts could light up a room by simply being in it. To have loved, and been loved, by someone as special as you was truly a privilege. Rest in peace, your work is done; we'll be fine. Born in New Waterford, he was a son of the late Michael and Leona (Copan) MacLellan. He was a member of the Parish of St. Leonard, St. Joseph Church, New Victoria, and was an employee of Devco for 33 years. He was an avid hunter with a passion for old cars and trucks. Surviving are daughter, Tracey (Greg) MacLellan, New Waterford; sons, Jason (Melanie), at home, Bill (Shirley), New Waterford; brothers, Martin, Ontario, Sandy, New Waterford; sisters, Jean Murphy, Leona Harte, Noel Hogan, Diane MacLean, all of New Waterford, Norma Ransom, Dartmouth, Jennie Crandell, Kentville; grandchildren, Josie and Ryan, Emma and Gregory. Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of Lloyd 'Lee' and Marilyn (Young) Bennett. Darlene was employed with the Halifax School Board. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Besides her parents, Darlene is survived by her sisters, Raylene Bennett, Sydney, Cheryl (Frank 'Oakie') O'Connell, Halifax; brothers, Buddy (Nancy), New Waterford, David (Linda), Ottawa, Kelly, Alberta; as well as several aunts, uncles, and her nieces and nephews, Michael, Jennifer, Christopher, Joshua, Jillian, Kyle, Janel and Kobi. McGuire St. Petersburg, Fla. - It is with great sadness we regret to announce the death of Rita A. McGuire at the Northside Hospital, St. Petersburg, Fla., on Feb. 1, 2009, where she was a longtime winter resident. Born in Pictou, N.S., she was the daughter of the late Matthew and Mary Anne (Walsh) Hersey. Rita was predeceased by her husband, Franklyn, infant son, Frank, sisters, Anne, Mary and brother, Dennis. Rita was an educator for most of her life beginning her 40-year teaching career in a one-room school on Pictou Island. She later moved to Cape Breton with her husband, living in Glace Bay, then moving to Sydney, spending the summers overlooking the Bras d'Or. She began teaching at St. Michael School, River Ryan, then becoming principal. As her career progressed, she became elementary curriculum supervisor for the Cape Breton Victoria School Board until her retirement. Rita is survived by her special friend, Angus; daughters, Maureen (David) Baillie, Glace Bay, and Franceen (Philip) Romney, Mahone Bay; grandchildren, Kate and Ross Romney, for whom Rita held a special place in her heart. Maureen and Franceen would like to especially thank Gordie and Bonnie MacDonald, Kay MacKinnon and Gloria Gillis for all the love and care that they showered on their mother. Cremation took place in Florida. A memorial service will be held in Lourdes parish, New Glasgow, at a later date. 'Glennie' MacDonald 55, Sydney - It is with great sadness that we, the family of Glen S. 'Glennie' MacDonald announce his recent, sudden passing. Born July 10, 1953, to Elaine (Stephens) Lilly and Parker MacDonald (Jan MacDonald), both formerly of Sydney, Glen lived most of his life locally as a proud Cape Bretoner. A graduate of Sydney Academy, Glen achieved success with the pre-tech program at the then College of Cape Breton and was previously employed as a labourer and a taxi driver. Passionate about music, Glen taught guitar locally, inspiring others to play. The quieter side of Glen saw him enjoy reading, hunting and fishing. Family and friends will miss his wit and dry sense of humour, as Glen always appreciated a good laugh. Many were attracted to his genuine personality and his sincere acceptance of others, as he had a gift for making others feel at ease. Glen will be remembered and missed dearly by his mother and father; sisters, Phyllis 'Bipsy' MacDonald, Proctor, B.C., and Brenda MacDonald, Kamloops, B.C.; nieces, Chelsea, Julia and Leah; nephew, Patrick; grandmother, Dorothy Stephens; aunts and uncles; remaining family members and friends. He was predeceased by his sister, Dorothy Elaine who died at birth. Also mourning is Glen's beloved and trusted friend, Carmel MacLeod. A memorial service will be held in late spring.
