Born in the Gaspésie, Québec, she was the daughter of the late Lloyd and Elizabeth (Dufresne) Davis. Shirley received her education at B.A. Dalhousie University,1989; B.Ed. Mount Saint Vincent University, 1991; M.Ed. Mount Saint Vincent University 1997 and M.Ed. Mount Saint Vincent University 2001. Shirley moved to Bathurst, N.B. in 1964 where she began her married life with her husband Bryce Coffin. This is where they raised their four daughters and made life-long friendships. In 1979, she moved to Nova Scotia with her family where she continued her post-secondary education. Shirley had a passion for teaching. She became a dedicated, caring and concerned educator. Besides her enthusiasm for learning, she had a passion for music, dance, song, literature, travel and the sun. She was respected and loved by her family, friends, co-workers and students. She spent her last days at home surrounded by her loving husband of 44 years and family. As Shirley often said, "Carpe Diem", (Seize the day). Survived by husband, Bryce Coffin; daughters, Tina (Robert) Crowell, Shelley (Joe) Rudderham, Susan Coffin (Robert Kenney), Natalie (Bill) Muise and 11 grandchildren; also many cousins, aunts and uncles. To everyone who cared for Shirley in one capacity or another, to everyone who sent cards, phoned, made meals "Thank You/Merci Beaucoup". Visitation will be held February 18, 2009, 7-9 p.m. at T.K. Sophie was predeceased by her husband, Michael; sister of the late Katie, Mary, Helen, Ann, Charlotte, Minnie, Pauline and her brother, Johnny. Survived by her sisters, Eva Kandravy and Olga Simko of Montreal and her brother, Peter Bachansci of Miami, Florida. She will be remembered by her many nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place in Montreal, burial and services will take place at a later date in Sydney, N.S. ___________________________________________________________________________ George Dyer, Sydney Born in Cornerbrook, Newfoundland, Canada, - George Dyer, 78, MacLeod's Hill, Sydney, passed away Thursday, Feb. 12, 2009, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Cornerbrook, Nfld., George was the son of the late Henry and Mae (Decker) Dyer. He retired from Irving Oil Ltd. after 23 years of service. Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth (MacEachern); daughters, Linda and Susan (Wayne), Sydney and Evelyn (Marc), Quebec; sons, George (Melanie) and David (Debbie), Sydney; sisters, Beulah (Donald) MacRury, Sydney and Hazel (Jim) Walters, Bras d'Or; brothers, Gordon (Bride), Sydney and Fred (Lillian), Halifax; 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. George was predeceased by his son, John; sisters, Evelyn and Ruby; half-sisters, Mabel and Agnes; half-brothers, Aubrey, Ross and Alistair of Newfoundland. ___________________________________________________________________________ Ramona Gillis, Glace Bay Born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada, - It is with sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Ramona Marie Gillis, 72, of Victoria Street, Glace Bay on Sunday, Feb. 15, 2009, at her residence. Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Donald and Donelda (Webb) MacIntyre. Ramona was very musically inclined and loved to play the fiddle, piano and guitar. She was a life-long member of the Coal Town Chorus. She wrote a book of poetry and was a songwriter. She thoroughly loved music. She was a member of Branch 3 Legion. She also was involved in the St. Anthony’s St. Vincent de Paul. Born in New Waterford, she was the daughter of the late Robert ‘Bob’ and Frances (MacLennan) Jardine. Joyce worked for many years for the Town of New Waterford and Community Services in New Waterford and Glace Bay, where she retired in 2005. She was a member of Calvin United Church, New Waterford and her favourite past times were spending time with her grandchildren at her cottage in Mira, attending horse races and hosting Sunday dinners. Raised and educated in North Sydney, she was the eldest daughter of the late William and Mary (MacDonald) Batherson. Mary and her husband raised their two daughters in Sydney Mines, where she was active in the Immaculate Conception CWL, the Red Cross and the Canadian Cancer Society. In addition to her volunteer commitments, she was an avid bowler at the St. Mary’s Hall Lanes, and a member of a ladies social group. At the age of 43, Mary began a new adventure, moving with her family first to Pennsylvania, and subsequently to Yonkers, New York, and Michigan a number of years later. It was during this period when she once again demonstrated her resiliency, re-entering the work force after a 25 year absence working at Gimbal’s Department Store, and later for the American Cancer Society. She loved gardening, swimming, and working with ceramics, and relished vacations spent visiting family in Ottawa, Ont., Halifax, and Cape Breton. After many years away, she and Louis returned to Nova Scotia, retiring in Halifax. Mary will always be remembered for her ready smile, big blue eyes, and friendly manner, but her loving kindness, and love of family truly defined who she was. Surviving are her daughters, Theresa (Tess Cuthbertson), Smith, Halifax; Mary Lou (Barry) White, Eastern Passage and their sons, Jamie (Marzena) White, Ottawa, Ont. and their children, Emily, Nathan, Joshua; and Christopher (Crystal) White, Dartmouth; brother, Blaise Batherson, Michigan/Florida; 14 nieces; seven nephews, and their families; sisters-in-law, Mona (Walsh) Batherson, Muriel (Dixon) MacDonald, Judy Curts and many special friends and neighbours. Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Edward Fanning and Madeline Cullen. She was a member of Sacred Heart Mission parish, Marion Bridge. Ann was very involved in the church and a very active fundraiser both for the church and in the community. Her door was always open and if you were ever in need of a pair of warm knitted socks or a hot cup of tea, Ann was the one to go to. She was dearly loved and will be sadly missed by her loving husband of 60 years, Lawrence; daughters, Lynda (Calvin) Eddy, Beverly (Ernest) Mugridge, Anita (Charles) Foley, Nancy MacInnis; sons, Lawrence William (Barb) and Robert Phillip. Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Murdock and Margaret (MacIntyre) MacKinnon. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish, Sydney. James was a kind and friendly man. He was employed with the Department of National Defense as a painter until his retirement. James was an avid reader and loved music, animals and was an avid collector. He is survived by his sister, Mora (Kenny) Hawley, Sydney and by numerous nieces and nephews. A special thank you to James’s caregiver, brother-in-law, Kenny Hawley. Born in New Waterford, Nov. 22, 1944, Ronald was the only son of the late Rannie and Mary Blanche (Muise) Muise. He was a member of the Parish of St. Leonard, St. Agnes Church, New Waterford. Ronald is survived by two sisters, Emily Sampson, Anita Campbell, both in New Waterford; and one niece, Ronda (Glen) Chiasson, Antigonish. Besides his parents, Ronald was predeceased by two brothers-in-law, Andrew ‘Brother’ Sampson and Dan Campbell. There will be no visitation, cremation has taken place. Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late James and Cassie (Cameron) Walsh. Ma was the backbone of the family, always available with a warm welcome, a listening ear and wonderful words of wisdom and advice for all of us. You could be sure their door was always open and the teapot was always on. From the comfort of her rocker with dad always beside her, she made each and everyone feel welcome in her home. Lou is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, Alphonse. She will be sadly missed by her six daughters and four sons. Born in New Waterford, she was a daughter of the late George and Martha (Bresson) Cecchetto. Clara was a member of the Parish of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Church and the New Waterford Lioness Club. She worked in the meat department at the CO-OP in New Wateford. Clara was an avid bowler and dart player. She also loved ice skating and playing cards. Clara has many happy family memories from Lake Ainslie that she holds close to her heart. Online expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at: www.vjmcgillivray.ca. ___________________________________________________________________________ Brendan Peck, Sydney Mines Born in Sydney Mines, Nova Scotia, Canada, July 28, 1925 - We regret to announce the passing of Brendan Peck, 83, of Sydney Mines, on February 13, 2009, at the veteran’s wing of Harbour View Hospital, Sydney Mines. Born in Sydney Mines, he was the son of the late Joseph L. and Loretta (MacDonald) Peck. He was a member of Immaculate Conception parish, Sydney Mines. Brendan served overseas with the Canadian Navy from 1939 – 1945. He saw action in Ireland, Scotland, and England. He was stationed aboard the destroyer Esquimault, which was later torpedoed off Halifax during the Second World War. He moved to the United States in the 1950s and was employed throughout his life as a harness horse trainer. He worked for Hall of Famers - Saunders Russell, Joe O’Brien, Stanley Dancer, Del Miller, and Clint Hodgins. Brendan is most remembered during his harness racing career as a trainer with the Bill Haughton Stables. His biggest accomplishment was taking the race mare Keystone Pioneer to the International Trot in Sweden. He is survived by his brother, Bernie (Grace); sisters, Marie Hartigan, Joan (Leonard) Ryan, and Helen (Wayne) Middlecamp; cousins, Irenaeus (Paul) Sullivan and Ray MacDonald (Elizabeth); many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by one brother, Gerard. There will be no visitation. Anna Cecilia (Merlin) Reid of Chapel Hill Estates, Rothesay, N.B. passed away surrounded by her loving family on Sunday, Feb. 15, 2009 at the Saint John Regional Hospital at the age of 92 years. Born in Glace Bay on August 4, 1916, daughter of the late Edward and Agnes (Layes) Merlin. Left to cherish her life are her sons, John Joseph (Marilyn) of New Waterford, Aubrey of Rothesay, N.B., Michael (Linda) of Quispamsis, N.B., Edward (Nancy) of Edmonton, Alta.; daughters, Pauline (Anthony) Niedzielski of Cape Breton and Heather (Pat) Oakley of Saint John, N.B.; one sister, Rita of Glace Bay; 19 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren. Besides her parents, Anna was predeceased by her husband, John Joseph (1977); daughter, Jane and grandchildren, Reginald, John Francis, Mary Cecelia (1964); as well as daughter-in-law, Sandra (1988); brother, Cecil; sisters, Dorothy, Ruby, Marguerite and Mildred. Devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend, Anna was wonderful mother and cook she was active in home and school and with the C.W.L. Those who knew her, will miss her terribly. Born in Sydney Mines, Clarence was the son of the late Bond and Myrtle (Snow) Rideout. He was a member of the Salvation Army. He was a retired coal miner, having worked in the Prince Mine for over 21 years. He is survived by his loving wife, Ruth (Dawe) Rideout; daughters, Debbie (James) Hardy, Georges River, Carol (Bert) Sullivan, North Sydney, Ruth Ann Rideout (Steve Wells), Sydney, and Darlene Rideout, (Cliffy), Sydney Mines; sons, Clarence Jr. (Denise), Alder Point, and Brian (Nadine), at home; 12 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Donnie (Dolores), Sydney Mines; sisters, Florence MacLellan and Loretta MacKinnon, both of Sydney Mines, and Bernice, Halifax.
