Cape Breton Deaths January 24, 2009 Alice Josephine Peters 84, Mira Road - Alice Josephine Peters, 84, of Mira Road, passed away Thursday, Jan. 22, 2009, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by her family. She was the daughter of the late Joseph I. MacGillivary and Gertrude (Jackson) MacGillivary of Gabarus. Alice's mother was one of the Pier 21 children who immigrated to Canada from Birmingham, England. Alice was a member of the former St. John's Anglican Ladies Guild, Club 55 and enjoyed playing 45s wherever there was a game. She attended and enjoyed the VON day program for seniors. Surviving are her four daughters, Anne Stone (Harvey) and Brenda Carson (Jerry), Mira Road, Judy MacLellan (Pat), East Bay, and Alison Locke (Glenn), Mira Road; five sons, Fred (Evelyn), Tom (Debbie), Gordon (Phyllis), George (Sheila), all of Mira Road, and Terry (Debbie), Hillside Road. Alice is also survived by 26 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Gertrude 'Girlie' MacKenzie and Florence 'Sis' Crooks, Halifax; only cousin, Frances Pushie, Sydney; family friend, Maurice MacNeil and everyone who considered her a "second mother." Alice was predeceased by her husband, Robert A. 'Barney,' sisters, Erna Ferguson and Adelaide Burns, brothers, Hardy and Lloyd. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Alice will be remembered for her unconditional acceptance of everyone and her house was "home" to many. Her favourite saying was "We are only going this way once." Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Saturday 7-9 p.m. and Sunday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held at Church of Christ the King, Trinity Avenue, Monday, 3 p.m., with Rev. Fred Rhymes officiating. Interment in Hardwood Hill Cemetery. Following the service, a meal and fellowship will be held at the Mira Road fire hall. Memorials may be made to the Church of Christ the King Memorial Fund, the VON Day Program for Seniors or a charity of one's choice. Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Dan and Agnes (McSween) Campbell. Ronald was employed with the Royal Canadian Military as an engineer for 28 years and served in Egypt and Lebanon on peacekeeping. After retiring he served as commissioner. Ronald was a member of St. John's Church. Ronald is survived by his wife, Barbara; daughter, Brenda Diane (Ray), Glace Bay; sons, Ronald A. (Mary), Glace Bay, Francis (Carla), Glace Bay, and Stephen (Elizabeth), Sydney; sister, Florence (John Penny), Glace Bay; brother, Gordon (Laura) MacDonald, Glace Bay. Also surviving are grandchildren, David, Derrick Keith, Sean, Megan, Alison, Stephen and Perreeza; great-grandchildren, Liam, Haley, Katelyn, Haley and Brenda. Ronald was predeceased by sisters, Catherine 'TB', Jessie, brothers, Dan 'Dick', John 'Dewey', Stephen 'Ginn'. Cremation has taken place, visitation for the late Ronald Campbell will be held Sunday, Jan. 25, 2009, from 7-9 p.m. at Patten Funeral Home, 71 Union St., Glace Bay, 849-7520. Online condolences may be e-mailed to patten@seaside.ns.ca. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Anthony Gary Basso 54, Dominion/Calgary - It is with deep sorrow that we, the family of Anthony "Gary" Basso, announce his passing on Jan. 22, 2009, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Glace Bay on March 8, 1954, he was the son of Antonio "Tony" Basso and the late Leta (Melanson) Basso. Gary joined the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in December of 1973 and was posted to Alberta, where he served until joining the Calgary Police Service in 1980. Gary enjoyed the many years he spent with family and friends in Calgary until his retirement in 2006. From the time he was young until the day of his passing Gary was a sports enthusiast. He was an avid golfer, baseball player and hockey player, but most of all he enjoyed the company of his family and many amazing friends while doing what he loved. While living in Calgary for many years, Gary never forgot his Cape Breton roots and loved to spend his summer vacations on Dominion Beach and sharing great memories with his lifelong buddies. Gary is survived by his father, Tony Basso, Dominion; his children, Daina Basso, Courtenay, B.C., Gary Basso (Halifax), Angela Thompson, Katie (Fraser) Rasmussen, and Alix Basso, all of Okotoks, Alta. Also surviving are his brother, Glenn (Susan) Basso, New Waterford; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Gary was predeceased by his mother, Leta Basso. A special thank you to the staff at the Cape Breton Cancer Centre as well as the Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for their amazing care and kindness that will never be forgotten. Born in New Waterford, he was the son of the late James and Annie (Campbell) Rich. Ron was a coal miner for 30+ years with Devco and he enjoyed walking with his buddies, as well as listening to his fiddle music. Ron is survived by his sons, Brad Rich and Keith (Dayle) Rich, both of Glace Bay; grandchildren, Allison, Cameron and Ty; and his companion, Valerie. Ron is also survived by his brother, Wayne (Mitchie); and sisters-in-law, Carmel Rich and Theresa Rich; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. He is survived by three daughters, Aline (Brian) Keys, Fredericton, N.B., Denise (Mike) Nichols, South Carolina, Gisele (Gaston) Doucet, Cheticamp; three sisters, Henriette Chiasson, New Waterford, Zabeth Deveaux and Therese LeBlanc, both of Cheticamp; seven grandchildren, Jason Keys, Kevin Deveaux, Guy Doucet, Joshua Keys, Tina Bolden, Glen Doucet and Alison Keys.
