Cape Breton Deaths January 09, 2009 Friday Stephen Humeniuk 86, Whitney Pier - Stephen 'Big Steve' Humeniuk, a lifelong resident of Whitney Pier, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2009, at Taigh Na Mara Nursing Home. He was the son of the late Michael and Pauline (Kosovich) Humeniuk of Kiev, Ukraine. 'Big Steve' worked at the Sydney Steel Plant open hearth department for 44 years. He was a member of the Cape Breton Highlanders; Branch 128 Whitney Pier legion. He was awarded several medals and honours after serving overseas. 'Big Steve' was recognized by the King's Order on April 4, 1946 for distinguished service. He also received the 1939-1945 Star, the Italy Star, the France and Germany Star, the 1939-1945 Canadian Volunteer Award, the Dutch Medal of Remembrance and a gold medal in recognition of 250 years of responsible government in Nova Scotia (October 2008). He was a member of Holy Ghost Ukrainian parish. He was an avid sports fan and had a passion for darts in his later years. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Rose (Hoysa); his five children, daughters, Shirley Ings, North Sydney, Donna (Edgar) Barrington, Portage; sons, Steve (Betty), Sydney River, Wayne (Monica), Winnipeg, and Danny (Cathy), Cleveland, N.S.; his sister, Kay Francuz, Guelph, Ont.; brothers, Tony (Pauline), Sydney, John (Evelyn), Sydney River, and Bill (Freda), Hamilton, Ont. 'GeeGee' is survived by grandchildren, Stephen Ings, Shauna Munro, Troy and Tiffany Barrington, Jocelyn, Krista and Vanessa Humeniuk, Craig, Dayna and Kyla Hominick, Julia, Kevin and Laura Humeniuk; great-grandchildren, Zachary and Noah Ings, Nila and Elise Munro and Amelia Hominick. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Annie (Bobby) Bobyk, his brother, Peter (Rita) Humeniuk and brother-in-law, John Francuz. Recently he was predeceased by his special son-in-law, Harold Ings, North Sydney. Visitation for the late Mr. Humeniuk will take place at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Sunday, Jan. 11 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Panachyda will take place at 7:30 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated Monday, Jan. 12 at 11 a.m. at Holy Ghost Ukrainian Church with Fr. Roman Dusanowskyj officiating. Burial to take place at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens. Donations may be made to the Holy Ghost Ukrainian Church Fund. Online condolences may be sent to twcurryparkviewchapel@ns.sympatico.ca or www.mem.com. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Catherine Marie McKinnon 63, Sydney, N.S. - It is with broken hearts that we, the family of Catherine Marie McKinnon, announce her peaceful passing on Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2009, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by her loving family. Born in New Waterford, Aug. 22, 1945, she was the daughter of the late John A. and Mary C. (Thomas) McKinnon. Cathy was the owner and operator of J & K Hairdressing, Victoria Road, Whitney Pier, and was a hairdresser for approximately 45 years. She loved her family and was involved in all activities with her nieces and nephews. She enjoyed walking and spending time at her cottage in Gabarus. Cathy is survived by five brothers, Donald John, Scotchtown, Alex (Joan), Angus (Joanne), both of Hamilton, Ont., Archie (Marie), New Waterford, and Robert (Betty Ann), Sydney Forks; five sisters, Joanne (Alonzo) Nearing, Albert Bridge, Marion (Tommy) Williamson, Mary Warren, both of Scotchtown, Rita (William) Moore, Lingan, and Ernestina (Hughie) MacArthur, Sydney. She is also survived by 18 nieces and nephews and 16 grandnieces and nephews, whom she cherished. Cathy had four godchildren, Scott Warren, Kurt Nearing, Sandra Prince and a special godson, Charles (Buddy) Boudreau. She will be sadly missed by her family, friends, clients and her two closest, friends, Kay Boudreau and Florence Hasiuk. She was predeceased by her parents. There will be no visitation by her request. Cremation has taken place under the direction of McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford, 862-7500. A funeral mass to celebrate Cathy's life will be held Monday, Jan. 12, 2009, at 11 a.m., in the parish of St. Leonard/St. Michael Church with Fr. Doug MacDonald officiating. Burial to take place in the parish cemetery at a later date. Following mass, a luncheon will be held at the KOC, Plummer Avenue, New Waterford, all are welcome. To send online condolences to the family go to www.mclellanfuneralhome.com. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Caridi Ernesto Pozzebon 86, New Waterford - With great sadness we announce the passing of Caridi Ernesto Pozzebon on Jan. 8, 2009, at New Waterford Consolidated Hospital. Born in New Waterford, Sept. 22, 1922, he was a son of the late Giovanni and Guiditta (Razzolini) Pozzebon. Caridi was a member of the Parish of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Church, New Waterford. He was well known, having operated a restaurant (Dagwood's), a poolroom and driving taxi. Caridi also worked as a carpenter and was a member of the Carpenter's Union, Local 1588. In his later years, he ran a sharpening business. A devoted husband, father and grandfather, Caridi's passing will leave a large void in the lives of his wife, children and family members. Caridi is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Mary Margaret McCann, better known as 'Blondie'; two sons, Gary (Patricia), Gardiner Mines, Ernesto (Cindy), New Waterford; six grandchildren, Mark, Jasmine (Michael), Chris (Becky), Giovanni, Jennifer Ann, Carmen; three great-grandchildren, Emily, Gavin, Lily; one sister, Ernestine Nearing, New Waterford; as well as several nieces and nephews. Caridi was predeceased by a son, Vernon, who died in infancy, sisters, Inez and Secundina, brothers, Ernesto and Gino. Visitation will be held Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral mass of celebration for Caridi will take place Monday, Jan. 12 at 2 p.m. in the Parish of St. Leonard, St. Michael Church with Fr. Doug MacDonald officiating. A luncheon will follow at the Carmel Centre with interment in Mount Carmel Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Parkinson's Society of Canada, Maritime Region or a charity of choice. Your loving smile, your gentle face, No one can fill your vacant place. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ John Frederick O'Neil 1960-2009 Glace Bay - It is with deep sorrow we announce the untimely passing of John Frederick O'Neil, 48, of Currie Street, Glace Bay, who passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2009, at the Glace Bay hospital following a courageous battle with cancer. John was the son of Gaffy and Elaine (Clements) O'Neil of Port Morien. John is survived by his loving wife, Cathie (Napier) O'Neil; his beloved daughters, Natasha (Paul) Boutilier, Georgetown, Ont., Elisha (Jason MacDonald), Glace Bay; loving stepson, Anthony Napier, at home; treasured grandchildren, Blake, Madison and Elice; his loving sisters, Cheryl (Jamie) Anderson, Black Brook, Rhonda (Stewart) MacPherson, Waddens Cove, and Joanne (Barry) MacLeod, Glace Bay. He is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews, all close to his heart. A truck driver by trade, John was happiest when at the wheel of any vehicle. Until his illness, he was employed at M & B Wholesale in Glace Bay. John loved hunting, fishing, the woods, his backyard fires and especially the bungalow. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 55 and the mixed dart league at Port Morien. John was predeceased by his first wife, Brenda Lee (White) O'Neil in 2003 as well as his grandparents, dear aunts and uncles. Visitation today (Friday) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Curry's Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay. Legion members will meet at 7 p.m. and Fr. Conrad Edwards will conduct a vigil service at 7:15 p.m. The funeral mass will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, Port Morien, Fr. E-mail condolences to jmcurry@ns.sympatico.ca. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Lynda Diane Boutilier 1973-2009 Glace Bay - It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of a wonderful, daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece and friend. Lynda Boutilier, age 35, of Glace Bay, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2009, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, with her loving family at her side. Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of Henry and Cynthia (Fletcher) Boutilier. Lynda was employed at various jobs in the Halifax area before becoming a library technician with the Halifax Regional School Board. She moved to Edmonton in September 2007. After only four short months in Alberta, Lynda was diagnosed with breast cancer and she returned home to Glace Bay in January 2008 to continue treatment and to be with her family and friends. Lynda enjoyed a full life with reading, camping outdoors, belly dancing and her cats. She had a warm, generous heart and a beautiful smile. Besides her parents, Lynda leaves to mourn, her sisters, Michelle (Robert Sealey), Halifax, Mary Elizabeth (John Robert Gazzola), at home; her two cats, Gypsy and Cedric and the family dog, Hunter; grandparents, Anna Fletcher and Henry and Joyce Boutilier. Also, aunts, uncles, cousins, especially, Aunt Barbara Jean Gillis, who nursed us all this past year with Lynda's illness. Lynda was predeceased by her maternal grandfather, Russell Fletcher and cousin, Daniel Delmaire. In honouring Lynda's wishes, cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009, noon until 2 p.m. with a memorial service to follow at 2:30 p.m. both in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home & Chapel, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay, with Nancy Whitney, DLM officiating. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery at a later date. Family flowers only please. Annie was a resident of Seaview Manor Nursing Home, Glace Bay. Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Lena (Odo) Kowalski. Annie was the last surviving member of her immediate family. In her younger years, Annie was an avid skater and bowler. Forever known for her quick wit, Annie will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by her two special nieces, Paula Morrison and son, Samuel, Glace Bay, and Cathy Morrison (Sheldon), Glace Bay; special nephew, Jamie (Shelley); children, Bryson and Kaylia, Calgary, Alta. Annie is also survived by half-sisters, Sharon (Benny) Bennett, Beverley (Tommy) Wadden, both of Glace Bay; and special family member, J.B. Morrison. Besides her parents, Annie was predeceased by her sister, June Morrison and her husband, Sammy, brother, Ralph Kowalski. The family of Annie Kowalski would like to thank the staff of Seaview Manor, 3rd Floor West at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex and Dr. Cadegan for the compassion and care over the years. There will be a private visitation and funeral for Annie Kowalski. Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Interment will take place at St. Anne's Cemetery at a later date.
