Cape Breton Deaths January 06, 2009 Tuesday Herbert Joseph Black 66, Sydney River - Herb is survived by his loving wife, Stephanie (Melnick) Black, and their children, Michael, Halifax, Krystyna, at home. He is also survived by his son, Paul, Sydney, Wayne (Mary T.), Halifax, Jean (Darryl) Magura, Toronto, and his granddaughter, Ella Magura. Herbie passed away suddenly at home Monday, Jan. 5, 2008, in his sleep. He was born in Sydney, July 18, 1942. Predeceased by parents, Alberta (Gillis) and Herbert Black. Herbie was employed with Independent Auto Appraisal Ltd. Previously employed with Breton Auto Appraisal. Previous co-owner of BlackWorth Auto service manager for Cape Breton Chrysler for many years. Herbie, being an automotive mechanic, was also a jack of all trades, as he will be remembered being very willing to lend anyone a hand at anytime. He enjoyed his daily walks with his dog Sassy. He was under the false impression that he was a good tarabish player on his regular Thursday night game. Herbie is survived by 13 siblings, Carol (Ken) Williston, Halifax, Janet (Buddy) Demers, Belmont, Mass., Tony (Carol), Westmount, Mary (Steve) Barrett, Enfield, Alberta (Ralph) Mozvik, Sydney River, Alan (Linda), Sydney, Terrance (Linda), Sydney, Joe (Kathy), Sydney River, Brian (Janice), Sydney, Cathy (Peter) Miller, Enfield, Robert (Jean), Sydney, Anne Marie (Dave) Livingstone, Halifax, John (Darlene), Halifax. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and his special aunts, Sara Black and Helen MacNeil. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial donations be made to St. Mary's Polish Church, Whitney Pier. Visitation will take place Wednesday, Jan. 7 at the S.W. Born in Bras d'Or, he was the son of the late Ella Petrossie, who died when he was an infant. He was raised by his aunt, Mary O'Neil, who raised him as her own son. He was a member of St. Joseph parish, Bras d'Or. Erwin worked for the Canadian Coast Guard for many years until his retirement in 1993. He loved listening to fiddle music and spending time with family and friends. Erwin is survived by his wife, Mary Agnes (Young) Petrossie, Bras d'Or; daughter, Ella (Steve) Devoe, Barrie, Ont.; sons, John (Diana), Bras d'Or, Calvin (Helen), Barrie, Ont., Lee (Cara), Bras d'Or, and Chris (Dawn), George's River. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren. Besides his mother, Ella, and Aunt Mary, he was predeceased by a brother, Roger Verding. Mick was employed at Sydney Steel for over 30 years as a welder. He was a passionate member of the Local 1064 Steelworkers Union where he served for many years. As a youth he was an avid sportsman and a valuable player on the Sydney Millionaires Hockey Club. Born March 5, 1931, in Sydney, C.B., a son of Peter and Mary (O'Connor) Drohan. Besides his wife Pat (Young), he is survived by three sons, Michael (Colleen Kelley), Gary (Jan Leonard) and Robert; and daughter, Michelle (Scott Allison), all of Halifax; one sister, Bonnie (Gordon MacDonald); and brother, Johnnie (Marie), both of Sydney; seven grandchildren, Peter, Luke, Isabelle and Molly Drohan, Sam, Ben and Grace Allison. He was predeceased by sisters, Betty (Royal), Annette (Parrish), Delores (MacDonald), Irene (Lewis), Mona (Kanchuk), brothers, Charlie (Bride), Tommy (Elizabeth), Raymond (Margie) and two brothers who died in infancy. Miss Lewis was born on Aug. 10, 1915, in Edwardsville, Cape Breton, the daughter of William and Mary Joseph McGillivray Lewis. She moved to New York City to be with her sister, Eleanor. She was trained as an LPN and worked well into her 70s for many prominent families in New York City. In 1995, Miss Lewis moved to Ogdensburg and resided with Tom and Donna Luckie. She enjoyed children, cats, horseracing, politics and baseball. She was a parishioner of St. Mary's Cathedral in Ogdensburg and very strong in her faith. Born in New Harris on Dec. 17, 1913, Dollie was the daughter of the late Catherine (Gunn) and Kenneth Angus MacKenzie. She resided in Boulardarie for 51 years. Dollie always enjoyed visitors in her home, where you were always served a good cup of tea and some of her beautiful baking. Dollie is survived by her 'special' niece, Elma and husband Jerry Maugher; grandniece, Bonnie and grandnephew, Paul, who with their love and watchful eye, allowed her to remain in her own home. Also surviving are sister, Sadie Hoover, Ottawa; niece, Lynne and nephew, David; brother, Kenneth (Marjorie) MacKenzie, Baddeck, N.S.; and nieces, Margo and Sylvia; sister-in-law, Margaret MacLennan, Florence; and nieces, Betty, Linda and Kathy. Besides her parents, Dollie was predeceased by her husband, James F., brothers, Johnnie, Harry, Wilfred and nephew, David. Predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Bertha in 2007. Survived by his two sons, Ralph and Donnie, Toronto, and their families; and his sister, Gwen (Nelson) MacLeod, Baddeck. Bobby was a faithful volunteer in his community through The Beaches Lions Club for 20 years, receiving numerous awards for his dedication, including the Melvin Jones Award and International Volunteer of the Year Award in 2001, presented by the United Nations General Assembly. Chilliwack Progress Chilliwack, BC Saturday, 27 Dec 2008 HENRY, Blair Alexander - Blair Alexander Henry, born July 15th 1963 in New Waterford, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, passed away peacefully on December 27th 2008 with his wife by his side. Blair is survived by his loving wife of 20 years, Kelly, 2 sons Keith and Jordan, mother Rose, brothers Joe, Angus, Lester and Shawn, sisters Francis (Allie), Rose (Fred), father and mother-in-law (Stan and Jean Striker), brother and sisters-in-law, and many nieces and nephews. Blair was predeceased by his father Raymond Ignatious Henry. Blair proudly served his country in the Armed Forces for 12 years before changing careers and coming back to Agassiz with his family. Blair worked for the Coast Mountain Bus Lines in Vancouver. He also was a tour bus driver with Quick. This was one of the many jobs he loved to do, as you all know Blair enjoyed meeting and socializing with people. In April 2000, Blair became a Correctional Officer working at both Kent and Mountain Institutions. He proudly called his fellow co-workers his brothers and sisters. Blair was a true family man. He could usually be seen at the hockey rink or at Cadets with his boys. He will be sadly missed by everyone who knew him. A Memorial Service will be held Tuesday, January 6th 2009 at 11:00 a.m. from the Agassiz Agricultural Hall - 6800 Pioneer Avenue, Agassiz, B.C.
