Cape Breton Deaths January 13, 2009 Tuesday Margaret Campbell (Townsend) Burchell 101, New Victoria - Margaret Burchell, 101, of Victoria Haven Nursing Home, Glace Bay, and formerly of New Victoria, passed away Monday, Jan. 12, 2009, at Victoria Haven. Born in Glace Bay, she was a daughter of the late John and May (MacDonald) Townsend. Margaret was a member of Calvin United Church and received a lifetime membership award for her service with the UCW. She was an avid Toronto Blue Jays fan who, in her early years, played baseball with the Merry Makers from 1922-1932. Margaret loved to keep active and at one time ran two miles a day and would also skate daily at Waterford Lake. She also enjoyed shopping, the casino, playing poker and going out for supper. Surviving are daughter, Cynthia (Frank) McNeil, sons, Cecil Burchell and Merrill (Barbara) Burchell, all of New Waterford; sister, Thelma Petrie, New Waterford; special nephew, Greg Townsend, British Columbia; three daughters-in-law, Ruth Burchell, New Victoria, Rita Burchell, Halifax, Allene Burchell, New Waterford; 17 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren. Margaret was predeceased by her husband, William 'Billy' Burchell, sons, Russell, Calvin and Roy, sisters, Eva LeDrew, Murial Stubbard, Jean Smith and Edna Budge, brothers, Cecil Townsend and Joseph Townsend. Visitation will be held today (Tuesday) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral service will take place 11 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 14 at Calvin United Church with Rev. Duncan Roach officiating. A luncheon will follow at Calvin Hall. Interment will be in Union Grove Cemetery, Scotchtown. Donations in Margaret's memory may be made to Calvin United Church or Victoria Haven Nursing Home in Glace Bay. Born in North Sydney, Mary was the daughter of the late William and Catherine (Osborne) Dolomont. She was a member of St. Joseph Church, North Sydney, where she taught Sunday school for a number of years and she also volunteered with St. Vincent de Paul Society, and at the canteen in the Northside General Hospital. Mary enjoyed spending her summers camping at Lake-O-Law in Margaree. Mary is survived by her loving husband, Bob Bradbury and her little dog, Ginger; her special nephew and grandnephew, Mick Dolomont and his son, Jonathan; her four sisters, Molly (Luc) Quellette, Frances Sheffield, Bridget (Fred) Fudger, Shirley MacInnes, all of North Sydney; her two brothers, Michael (Linda) Dolomont and William (Sylvia) Dolomont, both of North Sydney; her brothers-in-law, Pat Dooley and Frank Fennell; and also by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters, Theresa Dooley and Joan Fennell, brothers, Jack, Ronald and Jim 'B.J.', brothers-in-law, Jamie MacInnes and George Sheffield, two nephews, Patrick and Jim Dooley and her niece, Michelle Dolomont. There will be no visitation by request. Funeral mass for Mary will be held 10 a.m., Friday, Jan. 16 at St. Joseph Church with Rev. Jim Attwood officiating. Born in Sydney, he was the son of Mrs. Isobel Vassallo, Sydney Forks, and the late Lawrence Vassallo. Joe moved to Hamilton, Ont., in 1971, and worked at Stelco for 32 years. His passion was to return to Cape Breton to retire which he did in March 2008. Joe is survived by his daughters, Kelly, Courtney and son, Daniel, Hamilton, Ont.; and his grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Catherine (Herb) Tucker, Blackett's Lake, Marlene (Edward) Ginter, Sydney Forks, Rose, Edmonton, Alta., June (Paul) Delosh, Hamilton, Ont., Laurie (Jim) Binns, Sydney; brothers, Terry (Crystal), Sydney Forks, Todd (Eleanor), New Glasgow, Rick (Carrie), Terrance Bay; as well as many nieces and nephews; and also left to mourn Joe is his friend, Maureen Cusack. Besides his father, Joe was predeceased by his brother, Stanley. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service beginning at 10 a.m. Memorial service will be held 11 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 15 at the S. W. Born in Rose Blanche, Jessie was the daughter of the late James and Rose (MacDonald) Brown. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was a member of the Northside Senior Citizens and Pensioners Club. Jessie was a member of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, North Sydney, and a member of the ACW. Jessie is survived by her son, Brent (Vera) Courtney, North Sydney; and a daughter, Frances Chisholm, Dartmouth; seven grandchildren, Trena, Lee Scott, Angela, Ricky, Lisa, Erica and Lindsay and nine great-grandchildren, Troy, Max, Sam, Maggie, Courtney, Patrick, Ryan, Mary and Cory and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Eric Courtney, a daughter, Alma Kent, two sisters, Hanna and Ellen and a brother, John. Visitation for Jessie will be held from 7-9 p.m., Wednesday in the W.J. Mrs. Mary Winnifred White, age 62, of Dominion and formerly of Glace Bay, died at the Glace Bay Health Care Facility on Jan. 12, 2009, surrounded by her loving family and friends. Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of Mr. William Wareham and the late Mrs. Janet Wareham. She was employed briefly with Wal-Mart as the Wal-Mart greeter, a job she loved. She was a member of Epworth United Church and the Dominion Pensioners Club, where she enjoyed playing darts and socializing. She is survived by her husband, Donald White, Dominon; her son, Sheldon, B.C.; her daughter, Janet (JB) MacDonald, Glace Bay; two beautiful grandchildren, Kelsie and Emily MacDonald, who were her whole world. Mary is also survived by her father, William Wareham, Glace Bay, and her brother, Jim, Truro. She was predeceased by her mother, Janet Wareham and her son, Donald William White. Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late William Joseph and Margaret Mary MacNeil. Terry was a member of St. Andrew Church, Boisdale. He was employed for many years as a psychiatric nursing assistant at the Nova Scotia Hospital until his retirement. Terry is survived by his loving wife, Anne Marie (MacLeod) MacNeil; children, Nicole MacNeil (Lezin Doucet), Yarmouth, Terry and Emily, at home, and Calum, Red Deer, Alta.; his beloved grandchildren, Jordan and Carmen Doucet; brothers, Laurie (Margie) and Ted (Yvonne), both of Dartmouth, Bob and Dave, both of Glace Bay; niece, Heather and nephew, Ronnie. She fought a courageous battle with breast cancer for nearly six years. She was the wife of Joseph Barry Bartlett. Cherished mother of Deanna (David) Perks, London, and John Joseph Bartlett, Oshawa. She touched so many hearts during her journey and loved so many people, that God needed her to help Him. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Christine Anne (MacQueen) Jacques 56, Quebec - It is with broken hearts the family announces the passing of Christine Jacques on Jan. 10, 2009, at St. Mary's Hospital, Montreal. Born in Sydney, March 7, 1952, Christine was the eldest child of John James and Margie MacQueen, Sydney River. As well as her parents, Christine is survived by her loving husband and best friend, Daniel, sons, Benjamin and Nicholas, all of Ste. Anne-Des Plains, Quebec. She is also survived by her brothers, Gordie (Patsy), Marion Bridge, Ricky (Wilma), Westmount; sisters, Wendy (Greg) Keigan, Westmount, and Sally (Sandy) Mercer, Sydney. Christine also leaves numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends who will miss her dearly. Christine was a registered nurse who worked at hospitals and institutions in Halifax, British Columbia and throughout Quebec. Although she and Daniel made their home in Quebec, they loved to travel and their "surprise" trips to Cape Breton kept them closely connected to her Cape Breton home. Time spent with family and friends was cherished by Christine. Funeral services are to be held Wednesday, Jan. 14 in Ste. Anne-Des Plains with interment in Granby, Que. A memorial service will be held in Cape Breton at a later date. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Buddy Fraser 67, Little Bras d'Or - It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Michael 'Buddy' Fraser of Little Bras d'Or at his home on Jan. 10, 2009. He was the son of the late Willie R. and Rachael Fraser. He will be lovingly missed and remembered by his son, James (Mandi); three grandchildren, Kayla, Angus, Alasdair; brother, John Willie; sister, Sally and Peter Mansfield; his many nieces and nephews, their spouses and children and many, many friends. He was predeceased by brothers, Donald 'Duel', Rannie, Russell and Johnny, sisters, Betty (his twin), Ann, Theresa and Mary. At Buddy's request, there will be no visitation. Born in Whitney Pier, April 25, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Florence (Foster) and William Clifford. She resided most of her life in Little Bras d'Or, where she was involved with the community and was a devoted member of St. Andrew's United Church. She retired from Cape Breton Development Corp. in 1979 and for the past three years, she resided in Parkland Estates, Halifax. She is survived by her son, Matthew, Dartmouth; her daughter, Florence (Don) Miller, Halifax; grandchildren, Shelley Graham, Douglas Todd, Dartmouth, Ross Miler, Florida, and Jeff Miller, Truro; great grandchildren, Nick Graham, Allison and Matt Todd, Dartmouth; sister, Ann Marie (Peggy) Carey, Little Bras d'Or; sister-in-law, Gen Clifford, Sydney; and numerous nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by her husband, Matt in 1941, sisters, Florence King and Dolly Muggah, brothers, Dr. Vincent, Bill, Harry, Ernie and Les. Born in Donkin, Oct. 2, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Marjorie (Andrews) Brann. She is survived by her sister, Mary, Halifax; brothers, Willy 'Hobo' (Lucy), Connecticut, Lloyd (Karen), Glace Bay; sister-in-law, Ruth, Donkin; and many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Edna was predeceased by brothers, Gordon and Wilfred (Buddy), sisters, Loretta and Madge and brother-in-law, Budd Billard. As per her wishes, her body has been donated to Dalhousie Medical Research. Born in Gabarus, he was a son of the late Donald A. and Mary Ann (Nelson) Stewart. For 30 years, Bill worked as an optician in Halifax and Cape Breton. He was a member of the Masonic Thistle Lodge No.36, Port Morien and Philae Shriners. Surviving are his daughter, Dawn (Donald) Hopkins, Port Morien; and grandchildren, Caitlyn Grace and Rebecca Raye. Bill was predeceased by his wife, Alfreda (Leach) in 1988, siblings, Johannes, Evelyn, James, Christine and Leslie. There will be no visitation by request.
