Cape Breton Deaths January 23, 2009 Gordon Calvester Francis 1915-2009 Glace Bay - With sadness and loss, we regret to announce the passing of Gordon Calvester Francis, 93, of Glace Bay. Gordon passed away Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2009, at Seaview Manor. Gordon was the youngest of nine children of Whilhelmena and Jacob Francis of Christ Church, Barbados, W.I., and immigrated to Canada in 1953. He was a self-employed carpenter who applied his trade in the local area of Glace Bay and Sydney. Gordon was a Christian man and a member of The Gospel Hall, Whitney Avenue, Sydney. He expressed his faith through singing hymns as he worked and visiting the sick in local hospitals. As Gordon aged, he was afflicted with glaucoma, which eventually blinded him. In later years, complications from a cerebral bleed and other afflictions, confined him to Seaview Manor where he was popular among residents and staff. Gordon is survived by his wife, Anita (Braithwaite); daughters, Jacqueline Marlyn (Oswald Roberts), Wendy, Angela and Karen (Menjeste Kebede), all of Toronto; sons, Leroy (Anne), Toronto, Mike, Calgary, and Gordon Jr., Glace Bay; grandchildren, Myles Roberts, Vancouver, Catherine Roberts, Toronto, Mark and Craig (Ruby) Francis, Toronto, Nile and Lela Kebede, Toronto; and great-grandchildren, Ella and Owen Francis, Toronto. Besides his parents, Gordon was predeceased by all his siblings. Appreciation is expressed to the staff of Seaview Manor and the Glace Bay Health Care Facility for the kindness, care and attention extended to Gordon during the past few years. Visitation for Gordon Francis will be held Monday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Tuesday at the Sydney Gospel Hall, 255 Whitney Ave., Sydney, 902-539-8661. Interment will in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney. Online condolences to the Francis family are available through www.vjmcgillivray.ca. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Elizabeth Ann 'Beth' MacDonald Sydney Mines - It is with deep regret that we announce the sudden passing of Beth MacDonald, 49, at home on Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2009. Born in Sydney Mines on April 4, 1959, she was the only child of Earl and Ruth (Garnier) MacDonald. She was an adherent of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Sydney Mines. Beth was educated in the public school system in Sydney Mines, graduating from Memorial High School in 1977. From there she attended Dalhousie University for two years, followed by attendance at UCCB, where she earned a diploma in chemical technology. She was an avid reader and a diligent gardener. She spent many hours tending her gardens and taking care of the many birds that lived there. At her request, there will be no visitation or funeral service. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of J. M. Jobes Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. The burial will be held at a later date. God called an angel to His side. Irene was born in L'Ardoise, Richmond County, Cape Breton on Sept. 27, 1919. She moved to Glace Bay, N.S., and lived there for 64 years. Irene and her husband, Neil, moved to Fredericton, N.B., in May of 2002 to be closer to her family. Irene is survived by her beloved husband of 69 years, Neil, Fredericton; daughters, Alice (Don) Gardiner, Halifax, Anne (Michael) Skinner, Halifax, and Ruth (Ernest) McCallum, Fredericton; sons, Gordon (Dale) Johnson, Halifax and Roy (Chris) Johnson of Moncton. Irene had nine grandchildren, Lynn, Donna, Michael, David, Sandra, Kerri-Lee, Steven, Andrew, Loren and Derrick. She also has 10 great grandchildren and two step great-grandchildren. Visitation/funeral will be held at Glace Bay, c/o Curry's Funeral Home in the spring, at a date to be announced. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Donald Roy Collinge - It is with deep regret we announce the passing of Donald Roy Collinge on Jan. 13, 2009, at the age 75, after many long months battling heart disease. He leaves behind his loving wife and companion, Barb Bryant; children, David (Linda Milligan), Gwen (Chris Dickell), Steven (Mary Collinge), Lisa Cukler, Paul, Gary (Theresa), Wayne and Kathryn; brother, Robert (Marion); sisters, Florence (Scotty), Gwen (Donald); grandchildren, Thane (Marcia), Brian, Kevin, Carla, Steven, Angela; great-grandchildren, Taylor, Tyler, Kira and Wyatt; and five step-grandchildren who loved him.
