Cape Breton Deaths January 30, 2009 Alice Josephine MacDonald 94, East Margaree/Glace Bay - Its is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Alice MacDonald. Mom went to be with her Lord and Saviour on Jan. 29, 2009, at Sacred Heart Community Centre, Cheticamp, after a brief illness. Born in Halifax, Alice was the daughter of the late Thomas Amelius and Agnes (Willox) Roberts. Alice was blessed with a wonderful sense of humour that she maintained to the end. She was a faithful loving wife, a nurturing mother, an adored grandmother and great grandmother. She was a good friend and neighbour. She treasured her fellowship at Shores Acres Assembly in Burlington. She maintained her strong faith, and it helped her in her darkest hours. She enjoyed music, singing and playing the piano. She also had fond memories of singing in Knox United Church choir. She was an avid traveller, having made trips to Africa, England, U.S.A. and parts of Canada. Alice was a strong proponent of education for herself and her family. She touched the lives of all those who knew her, even if it was only for a brief time. Alice is survived by her daughters, Lillian (Frank) Stiller, Ontario, Sharon (Robert) Millar, Ontario, Alice (Marc) Brindeau, South Africa, Jean MacDonald, Kentville, Margaret (George) Blois, Margaree, Doreen (Rev. Dr. Peter) Barnes, Ottawa; daughter-in-law, Marguerite MacDonald, Hubbards; and two sons, Harvey, Ontario, Daniel (Victoria) MacDonald, Bridgewater. Also surviving are stepbrothers, Alex (Kay) Johnston, Buffalo, Rev. Alan Johnston, Burlington; and one stepsister, Mae (James) MacKinnon, Ottawa. Alice also had 27 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Alice was predeceased by her husband, Archibald Alexander MacDonald in January of 1972, son, Robert MacDonald, daughter, Agnes MacDonald, brothers, Henry and Samual Roberts and stepbrother, Daniel Johnston. Visitation will take place Sunday, Feb. 1 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral service will be held Monday at 2 p.m. in St. Paul's Presbyterian Church, Glace Bay, with Rev. Michael Henderson officiating. A reception will follow at the church. Interment will be held at Greenwood cemetery at a later date. "Well done, good and faithful servant" ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Faith Sharon (Williams) Carter 62, Sydney Mines - It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Faith Sharon (Williams) Carter on Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2009, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by the people most important to her . . . her family. Faith was born in Alberton, P.E.I., on Aug. 7, 1946, to George and Elsie (Tarr) Williams. Raised in Alberton and Sydney Mines, she was always an "Islander" at heart. Faith was a member of Trinity Anglican Church in Sydney Mines. She was an active member of her community and was a founding member of Northside Future, a group dedicated to improving the Northside after the closure of the coal mines. Faith was an avid horsewoman and could be found every morning at the Northside Downs. Her love of harness racing was honoured when she was inducted into the Cape Breton Horseman's Association Honorary Hall of Fame. Faith is survived by her loving husband of 35 years, George; and by her three daughters, Sharon (Marc) Munroe, Shannon and Sandi (Paul) Barnes. Her greatest joy was found on the smiles of her grandchildren, Alyssa, Jordan, Courtney and Cate. Faith is also survived by her sister, Debbie (Bud) MacIntosh; brother, George (Robin) Williams; sister-in-law, Marg (Dave) Matthews; brothers-in-law, Donnie (Ann), Robert (Judy), Brian (Eileen), Terry (Isabel) and Ronnie (Jennifer); nine nieces, seven nephews and several grandnieces and grandnephews. She was predeceased by her parents, George and Elsie (Tarr) Williams, sisters, Ella Jane and Ada Glos, brother, Kenneth David, mother-in-law, Elizabeth and father-in-law, George Sr. Visitation for Faith Carter will be held in the J.M. Online condolences may be sent to the family at jmjobesfuneralhome@ns.aliantzinc.ca. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Michael Charles 'Charlie' MacMillan 60, North Sydney - It is with broken hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Charlie MacMillan in a skiing accident on Monday, Jan. 26, 2009, while vacationing in British Columbia with his daughter. Born in North Sydney on Dec. 25, 1948, Charlie was the son of the late Norman and Frances (Young) MacMillan. After attending school in North Sydney, he went to Xavier College in Sydney and later attended Saint Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, graduating with a bachelor of arts degree in 1973 and bachelor of education degree in 1974. While at St. FX, Charlie co-captained the X-Men varsity hockey team where he excelled at right wing. A well known and beloved teacher he began his career at Fairview School. In 1979, Charlie accepted the position of radio and television broadcasting teacher at Memorial High, a position he held until his retirement in 2004. An avid sportsman, Charlie enjoyed playing hockey, skiing and touring on his motorcycle. He loved the water and was happiest while sailing with his friends and family on his cherished "Hi Lady." Left to mourn his passing are his beloved wife of 35 years, Diane (MacNeil); his daughter, Dr. Lindsay, Toronto; and son, Michael (Holly), North Sydney. Charlie is also survived by sisters, Mary Ann (Leo) Doyle, Kay (Mac) Batherson, Marg (Dave) Ratchford, brothers, John C. (Karen), Normie (Linda), Malcolm (Linda), all from the Northside, and Dennis (Mary Beth), Moncton; sisters-in-law, Joan Edwards, Sydney Mines, Barbara (Frank) Viva, Toronto; and numerous nieces, nephews and many friends. Born in New Warterford, she was a daughter of the late Patrick and Julie Anne (Hogan) Wilson. Mary was a member of the Parish of St. Leonard, St. Michael Church, River Ryan. She enjoyed her trips to the casino and loved reading, knitting and singing. In earlier years, she also loved to dance. Mary was known to have a green thumb and could make any flower come to life, especially her favourite, lilacs. Surviving are daughters, Barbara (William) Healey, B.C., Annabelle (Lloyd) Montgomery, Alberta, Mary MacMullin, Sydney, Ronda (William) Doyle, Ontario, Cora MacMullin, New Waterford; son, Michael MacMullin, New Waterford; brothers, Charles Hogan, Wilbert (Eileen) Smith, both of Scotchtown; sister, Margaret Harte, New Waterford; numerous precious grand- and great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; special friends Margie Harte, Patricia Gatza and Tanya Dauphney. Born in Port Elgin, N.B., she was the daughter of the late William Cecil and Doris (Babineau) Legere of Moncton, N.B. She was a certified nursing assistant and practised her nursing skills in many provinces throughout Canada until her retirement in 1989. She was the loving wife of the late Elias Sonny Jamael and a gentle mother to her children, Frances (Mitchell Ettinger), Digby, N.S., Susan (David Shipp), Calgary, Alta., Mary Ann, Riverview, N.B., Matthew (Jackie), Cold Lake, Alta., and Carolyn, Portage, N.S. She is survived by brothers, Roy (Suzanne) Legere, Quebec, Joey (Jeanne) Legere, N.B., and Paul-Emile (Nancy) Legere, N.B. Nanny leaves behind nine loving grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles; and two very special canine companions, Holly Berry and Kayla. She was predeceased by her grandson-in-law, Cpl. Dustin Wasden. Cremation has taken place and a memorial mass will be held at St. Mary's Church, East Bay, Saturday, Jan. 31, 2009, at 10 a.m., Fr. Born in Glace Bay, Mabel was the daughter of the late John James and Maria Jane (Yorke) Allison. Mabel had a strong faith which she carried throughout her lifetime. She was a member of St. Anne's Church, Glace Bay. Mabel was a quiet woman who enjoyed the simple pleasures of life and will be remembered for her compassionate nature. She is survived by one daughter, Ann (Roland) Coombes, one brother, James (Teresa), and two sisters, Viola and Camella (Mrs. Alex MacDonald), all of Glace Bay. Also surviving are Mabel's grandson, James Coombes, Glace Bay; several nieces and nephews; and one special niece, Mary Brennan, Glace Bay. Mabel was predeceased by three sisters, Allie, Rita, Mary, two brothers, Frank, Stephen and a brother and sister in infancy. Private family visitation only at V.J. Online condolences to the family can be expressed at www.vjmcgillivray.ca. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Kevin Patrick MacInnis 52, Port Hood - Kevin Patrick MacInnis, 52, of Port Hood, passed away on Jan. 26, 2009, in Windsor, Ont., after a courageous battle with cancer. Kevin was cheerful to the end and died peacefully with family by his side. Born in Little Judique, he was a son of Sadie (MacIsaac) MacInnis, Port Hood, and the late Hugh MacInnis. Kevin was a member of the UA Local 682 Plumbers and Pipefitters of Sydney. He was employed as a welder and worked on construction sites across Canada. He was one of only a few Maritimers chosen to work on the natural gas line to Maine. He was held in high regard by his fellow workers and was an asset on every job where he was employed. Kevin always enjoyed getting back to Cape Breton and spending time outdoors and on his boat. He is survived by his loving wife, Donna (MacDougall), Redford, Mich.; much-loved sons, Ryan, Chase and Jamie; as well as their mom, Karen. He is also survived by his mother, Sadie MacInnis, Inverary Manor; sisters, Tootsie MacDonald, Margie MacInnis, Anne (Jack) MacDonald, Port Hood, Marie (Carmen) Campbell, Rosie (Sandy) MacNeil, Louise (Neil) MacNeil, Mabou, Ellen Macdonald (Kenny Gillis), Judique, Gena MacIntyre, Dartmouth; brother, Brian MacInnis (Arlene Duncan), Stoney Creek, Ont., and half-sister, Agnes (MacDonald) Burns, Halifax. Kevin was an uncle and a great-uncle to many nieces and nephews with whom he kept in touch, often through his "late night" phone calls. He will be missed by each and every one of them.
