Cape Breton Deaths January 31, 2009 Gertrude Frances Copley 79, New Waterford - Gertrude Frances 'Gertie' Copley passed away peacefully on Jan. 30, 2009, at the Maple Hill Manor, New Waterford. Born in Inverness, she was the daughter of the late James Hughie and Margaret (Dunn) Coady. Gertie met Paddy, they married and settled in New Waterford. At one time she was an employee at the Maple Hill Manor, which she enjoyed. They had no family of their own but knew what children liked very well. Her door was always open and she welcomed you with open arms and a big smile. She enjoyed company, card games, bingo, dances, telling stories and jokes. She lived the last years at the Maple Hill Manor where she was well cared for. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her. She is survived by her loving husband, Paddy; sister, Mary (Michael) Stewart, Southwest Margaree; and brother Johnny, Margaree Forks; several nieces and nephews and grandnieces and nephews, as well as great-grandnieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was also predeceased by her brother, Joseph in infancy, niece, Camilla and nephew, Alex. Visitation for Gertie will take place at McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford, 862-7500, Monday, Feb. 2, 2009, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. and a funeral mass to celebrate Gertie's life will be held Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2009, at 2 p.m. in the parish of St. Leonard/St. Michael's Church with Fr. Doug MacDonald officiating. A luncheon will follow at the KOC, 3236 Plummer Ave., New Waterford, and all are invited. Burial in St. Agnes Cemetery will take place at a later date. To send online condolences to the family go to www.mclellanfuneralhome.com. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Dr. Mohammed (Moe) Shaikh July 25, 1931-Jan. 30, 2009 Sydney Mines - We regret to announce the death of Dr. Mohammed Baqar Shaikh, which occurred on Friday, Jan. 30, 2009, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Moe passed away peacefully surrounded by his family after a brief illness. Born in Poona, India, he pursued a career in medicine. His career took him many places over the years, and finally led him to Sydney Mines, Cape Breton. He established a practice in Sydney Mines, and worked for 30 years as a general practitioner in the community. As well as practising medicine, he will be remembered for his love of cooking, socializing and a good game of bridge. He was an enthusiastic sports fan (any sport!) He is survived by his wife, Marilyn; sons, Bazil in India, Stephen (Cathy) McGee, daughters, Bernadette (Joe) O'Connell, Yasmin (Mike) Shaikh; stepchildren, Nancy Skinner, Sharon (Scott) MacDonald, Sean Skinner; son-in-law, James Murphy; grandchildren, Krista, Aaron, Angela, Sandy, Stephanie, Scott, Dylan and Sophie; great-grandchild, Tristan. He is also survived by brothers, Zafar and Zabair Shaikh, sister-in-law Tasneem Shaikh and nephew, Waseem. Mohammed was predeceased by his parents, a brother and sister, and his wife of 30 years, Hermine Shaikh. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends. There will be no visitation. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2009, at 2 p.m. in St. Pius X Church, Main Street, Sydney Mines, with Fr J. J. MacDonald officiating. A reception will follow the service in the parish hall. In lieu of flowers, donations in Dr. Shaikh's memory may be made to the Northside Hospital Foundation, or to a charity of one's choice. Born in Sydney, N.S., she was the daughter of the late George and Margaret (White) Gushue. Bernice worked at the Oneida silverware plant in Niagara Falls for years until she retired. During her lifetime, Bernice enjoyed attending church, playing the piano, skating and spending time with friends. She always had a smile and a joke for everyone. Bernice is survived by her loving husband of 56 years, Art Fifield; her beloved daughter, Lori Morrison (Jim) and her cherished grandson, William Morrison. She is also survived by her brothers, Ron Gushue (June), Jim Gushue (Ellen) and her sister and best friend, Anna Hayes. She will be greatly missed by her sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law and many nieces, nephews, and greatnieces and greatnephews in Nova Scotia and Ontario. Besides her parents, Bernice was predeceased by her brothers, Cyril, Michael 'Mickey' and George 'Jr.' Gushue and sisters, Theresa Tonet and Madelyn Sheppard. Visitation for Mrs. Fifield was held Friday at the Patterson Funeral Home, 6062 Main St., Niagara Falls, with the funeral mass being held today (Saturday) at 10 a.m. at the church of Our Lady of the Scapular. Beloved husband of Chantal. Cherished father of Jacob. Loving son of Barbara and John Bagnell. Dearest brother of Stephen. Loved son-in-law of Connie and Richard St. Laurent. He was predeceased by his parents, Mary Adeline (Burke) and John Murdock 'Murray', two brothers, Raymond Malcolm and Michael Garfield, as well as one sister, Genivieve. He is survived by his son, George, Sydney, N.S.; and his daughter, Brenda McMullin, Orangeville, Ont.; one sister, Grace Mackesey, New Waterford; and four brothers, Earl, Baddeck, N.S., Lester, Halifax, N.S., George, Peterborough, Ont., and Daniel, Brampton, Ont. The family wishes to thank Dr. Jeff Nichols of Woodstock for the care he has given Ernie over the past years. A private family service will be held at a future date. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Brenton Arnold MacDonald 80, Long Beach, Port Morien - Brenton MacDonald, age 80, of Long Beach Road, Port Morien, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 29, 2009, at his residence. Born on Aug. 20, 1928 in Port Morien, he was the son of the late Archie and Mildred (MacDonald) MacDonald. Brenton served in the Canadian Air Force and later became a commercial airline pilot as well as an aircraft maintenance engineer. He worked all across Canada. He also belonged to the Atlantic branch of the Aircraft Engineers Association. Before becoming involved in the airline business, Brenton also worked in the coal mines. He is survived by one sister, Mae Kelly, Long Beach; two brothers, Angus (Edna), Long Beach and Archibald John 'A.J.', Massachusetts, U.S.A. Brenton is also survived by two nieces, Heather Lynn Ozon, Westmount, Jennifer MacDonald, Massachusetts; and two nephews, Brenton Kelly, P.E.I., and David Kelly, Newfoundland. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home in Glace Bay. A private interment will be held at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens at a later date.
