Cape Breton Deaths January 07, 2009 Eugene Andrew Basso 66, New Waterford - Eugene Andrew Basso, age 66, of Emerald Street, New Waterford, passed away suddenly at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2009. Born Nov. 30, 1942, in New Waterford, Eugene was a son of the late Erminio and Rita (Durando) Basso of Italy. He was a member of the Parish of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Church. Eugene was a proud member of the Canadian Peacekeepers and spent time in Cyprus. After Eugene retired from Devco with many years of service, he joined the commissionaires. At the time of his passing, he was stationed at Victoria Park and will be sadly missed by the boys. Eugene loved the outdoors whether he was fishing, hunting or just hiking in the woods. He was an avid sports fan and loved to watch the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles play. He is survived by two sons, Michael (April) and their daughter, Gina, Coxheath, Terry (Erin) and their daughter, Sasha and son, Tyler, Campbell River, B.C.; one daughter, Shauna and her daughter, Paige and son, William, Edmonton, Alta.; one brother, Gordon, Ottawa. Also mourning Eugene's passing is his loving friend, Margie Borden and her son, John (Leah) Gillis and their daughter, Grace, Halifax, her daughter, Maralyn (Todd) Delaney and their children, Hannah and Ryan, Sydney. Eugene was predeceased by his wife, Paula (MacSween), one sister, Eva and two brothers, Reno and Albert. Visitation will be held today (Wednesday) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral mass of celebration for Eugene will take place 11 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 8, 2009, at the Parish of St. Leonard, St. Michael Church with Fr. Doug MacDonald officiating. A luncheon will be held at the KOC hall in New Waterford, immediately after the funeral mass. Interment will then follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Albert Bridge. Family flowers only please. Online expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.vjmcgillivray.ca. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Daniel Wylie Church Nov. 5, 1946-Jan. 5, 2009 - Daniel Wylie Church of Coxheath passed away on Jan. 5, 2009, after a lengthy struggle with cancer. Dan is survived by his loving wife, Ruth; son, Randy (Tyra) and three very special grandchildren, Wylie, Makayla and Daniel; sister, Jayne Lane and niece Jenna; aunts, June Sanford and Lorraine Mitchell, Ontario; father and mother-in- law, James (Muriel) MacCormack; brothers-in-law, Nelson (Donette) MacCormack and Ross (Edna) MacCormack. Dan also leaves to mourn, Dorothy Lapierre and special friends, Charlie Bonaparte, Maria Sophecleous, Glen Walsh and Debbie MacVicar. Dan enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy at the age of 17, serving in Canada and overseas as a chef. After retiring from the Navy, he also worked for 15 years at the Halifax County Rehab Centre. Both Dan and Ruth retired to Cape Breton, where they enjoyed being together with family and friends. Dan especially enjoyed cooking for family gatherings, camping with Ruth and their grandchildren, cheering on the Toronto Maple Leafs with Jim and most recently, their trips down south. Cremation has taken place. A service in memory of Dan will be held 2 p.m. January 10, 2009 at S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexander St., Sydney. Beloved husband of Mary McIntyre (née Ryan) of Elliot Lake and loving father of Gerry, Donald, Alice Marie, Colleen, Laurie, Charmaine, Joan and Janice. Also survived by 21 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He will be missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives and friends in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia and Ontario. A celebration of his life will be held in Southern Ontario, April 25, 2009. Born in Boston, Mass., she was the daughter of Allan and Annie May (MacDonald) MacDonald of Black River, Inverness. Kay or Rena spent all her adult life in the United States. Surviving are her husband, Don and two sons, Aaron and Greg, all in New York. Also surviving are three brothers, Dougie, Howie Centre, Sander, Sydney, and John, Edmonton, Alta.
