Al was born in Glace Bay, NS (Cape Breton) on December 19, 1928 to the late Arthur and Annie Treige. He enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces for active duty in WW2 and later re-enlisted with the Special Forces in the Korean War. After his discharge in 1953 he worked as an underground miner in the coal mines near Glace Bay. In 1956 he was recruited by Steep Rock Iron Mines to work as an underground miner until the underground operation shut down. During his first year in Atikokan he met and married Elsie Bebee. He then worked for Oglebay Norton Co. at Canadian Charleson open pit mine and when they closed he worked as an industrial millwright at Caland Ore until its closing in 1980. In his later years he worked as administrator of the Atikokan Native Non-profit Housing until his retirement in 2004. Al loved sports of every kind and was a team member in many. He will be remembered for his fair play with hockey in Atikokan as a player, coach, convenor, minor hockey executive member and #1 fan. He also enjoyed his bingo adventures and other travels, including the Neumann farm in Busby, AB. His trips to visit family on Cape Breton Island and the lobster feasts were a highlight in his life. The days of old in Atikokan were spent with his large extended family playing cards, listening to music and enjoying conversations around the dinner table on special occasions. Al is survived by his wife Elsie Treige of Devon, AB, children Ken (Fay Roblin) Treige of Atikokan, Wendy Warren and Robin Neumann, both of Devon, AB, grandchildren Aimee, Sarah (Simon), Jayke, Derek, Ian, Nicole and Kelly, and siblings Hattie Treige, Muriel Turner, Mary Shepherd and Daniel Treige, all of Glace Bay. He was predeceased by his father Arthur in 1976, mother Annie in 1961, brother Joseph in 1940, son-in-law Jeff Neumann in 2003, mother-in-law Mary Bebee in 1992 and father-in-law Ken Bebee in 2000. A military service to celebrate Al's life was held on Friday, October 21 at the Royal Canadian Legion Br 145 with Rev. Gord Waldie officiating. Interment is at Little Falls Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the AGH Extended Care Wing or the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation, Critical Care Unit, 98 Oliver Rd., Thunder Bay, ON P7B 6V4.
