Cape Breton Deaths January 21, 2009 Nancy Marie Jefferson 67, Sydney - It is with heavy hearts that we, the family, announce the passing of Nancy Jefferson on Jan. 19, 2009. Nancy died peacefully at home after her courageous battle with cancer. Born in Iowa, she was the eldest daughter of the late Ellen and James Idleman. Nancy was employed at Maple Leaf Gardens, where she met many great friends for 17 years until moving to Truro in 1990. During her time in Truro, Nancy and Bill were loving foster parents to a number of children from the Truro area. Nancy was a well respected lady who touched the hearts of everyone she knew. Nancy is survived by her loving husband of 47 years, Bill; children, William, Halifax, Coleen Cipak (Wendell Greer), Sydney, Paul, Halifax, Andrew, Alberta; and four grandchildren, Ashley, Stephen, Jorden and James. She is also survived by her sister, Kathy Turrentine, California; brothers, James, California, and David, Wisconsin. Besides her parents, Nancy was predeceased by her two sisters, Mary and Judy. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Cape Breton Palliative Care Society. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Thursday, Jan. 22, 2009, at 1 p.m. one hour prior to the memorial service at 2 p.m. at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Sheldon Chant officiating. Online condolences may be sent to our webpage at www.chantfuneralhome.com. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Daniel Frederick Briand Peacefully in his own home, Daniel Frederick Briand passed away on Monday, Jan. 19, 2009. - Dannie was predeceased by his beloved wife and best friend, Diddie. Loving father of Frances and her husband Michael. A blessing to his grandchildren, Erin, Trevor and his wife, Sarah and his great-granddaughter, Lauren. Dear brother of Mayme and her husband the late Donald Clare. Predeceased by his sisters, Rita and Florence and brother, Leo. Sadly missed by many nieces and nephews in Ontario, Quebec and Nova Scotia. Dannie was born in L'Ardoise, N.S., and served with the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War. After the war, he was employed by the steel company in Sydney, N.S. In 1961, he was transferred to Domtar in Trenton, Ont., where he worked until his retirement. He was an active member of St. Peter's Church for over 40 years. Dannie will always be remembered as a kind, gentle and humble man who cared deeply for his family and friends. Visitation will be held today (Wednesday) from 7-8:30 p.m. at Rushnell Funeral Centre, 60 Division St., Trenton. Online condolences at www.quintefuneralcentres.com. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Annie MacDonald 1928-2009 Port Morien/Glace Bay - We are sad to announce the passing of Annie MacDonald, age 82, formerly of Port Morien and a resident of Victoria Haven Nursing Home, Glace Bay. Annie passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, Jan. 18, 2009, at Victoria Haven. Born in Easington Colliery, England, she was the daughter of the late Stephen and Annie (Goodrum) Metcalfe. Annie came to Canada at the age of three and lived most of her life in the Port Morien area. She was a member of St. Paul's Anglican Church, Port Morien. Annie will be sadly missed by her sons, Sheldon (Donna), Halifax, James, Hamilton, Ont.; and brother, John (Jean Ann), Port Morien. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Sharon, Russell, Amanda and Nicholas and five great grandchildren, Charles, Trevor, David, Curtis and Chelsey. Besides her parents, Annie was predeceased by her daughter, Beverly, son-in-law, Henry and daughter-in-law, Patricia, five brothers, William, Stephen, Arthur, Thomas and Allan, two sisters, Elsie and Frances. In honouring Annie's wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Interment will take place at a later date.
