Simone Roach - 93 yrs Henry MacLeod - 86 yrs Gloria Jean McNeil Born In: Bridgeport Passed on: June 29th, 2016 It is with heavy hearts that we, the brothers and sisters of Gloria, announce her passing on Wednesday, June 29, 2016. Born in Bridgeport, she was the daughter of the late Neil and Mary Bell (McDonald) McNeil. After graduation from St Michael’s High School she attended Normal College and began her teaching career at St Anne’s School, Glace Bay. Her entire professional life was spent at St Anne’s School. She was a firm believer in lifelong education. She loved to take courses at Xavier Jr. College and later at CBU. She enjoyed the courses not only for the educational benefits, but also for the people she met. She was a member of Immaculate Conception parish and at one time taught religious education at St. Eugene’s parish. Her lifelong service to her family and her students was done in joy. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by two brothers, Dan (Fox) and Archie McNeil; the love of her life, OReste Pontello. She is survived by three brothers, Doug (Mary Jessie) McNeil, Stevenville, Ont., John (Butch) Fort Erie, Ont., Greg (Janet) McNeil, Bridgewater; two sisters, MaryLou (Vince) Browner, Glace Bay and Anna Lee McNeil, Baddeck; special cousin, Rev Neil McDonald; two sisters-in-law, Theresa McNeil and Martha McDonald. Visitation with the family will be 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 7, followed by a funeral mass at 11 a.m., all at Immaculate Conception Church, Bridgeport. The interment will follow in St Eugene’s Cemetery. Gloria’s brothers and sisters would like to express their thanks to all members of Alderwood Guest Home for their support and care provided to Gloria during this journey. Simone Roach Born In: New Waterford Passed in: Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed on: July 2nd, 2016 Sister M. Simone Roach, 93, a Sister of Saint Martha, died at Bethany, the Motherhouse, on July 2, 2016. She was in the 69th year of religious life. Born in New Waterford, N.S., Sister Simone was one of 11 children of the late Simon and Mary (MacInnis) Roach. Sister entered the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Martha in 1945, and made her perpetual profession of vows on August 15, 1950. Prior to entering the Congregation she graduated from St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing, Glace Bay, N.S. After her profession of vows Sister Simone spent most of her life ministering in the field of Nursing Education. In Nova Scotia, she served at St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing in Glace Bay, St. Martha’s Hospital School of Nursing and the Nursing Department of St. Francis Xavier University, both in Antigonish. She served, also, at St. Augustine’s Seminary, Scarborough, Toronto School of Theology, Toronto, St. Bonifice Hospital, Winnipeg, and Catherine Labouré School of Nursing, Boston, MA. In 1980-81, Sister was Scholar in Ethics at Harvard Divinity School in Cambridge, MA, and visiting professor in the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Toronto. She served 1981-85 as a member of the General Council of the Congregation. In 1996 established the Congregation’s Heritage Department at Bethany. Her gifts as writer, author and speaker, particularly on topics of Ethics and Caring, continues to contribute greatly to education in the health care profession. A graduate of St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Sister furthered her studies in administration and clinical supervision at the University of Toronto and received a Master of Science in Administration Nursing Education at Boston University. In 1970 she received her Doctorate in Higher Education from the School of Education at Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C. In 2011, McMaster University, Hamilton, Ont., conferred upon Sister Simone the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, in recognition of her influential work on the study of caring in nursing practice across the globe. Sister Simone was appointed to the Order of Canada in 2010 for her contributions as a leader in nursing education and for establishing the first Code of Ethics for nurses in Canada. Sister Simone is survived by one sister, Ellen Smith, Florida, and by one brother, Bernard, Gloucester, Ont. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by sisters, Catherine Roach, Sarah Gillis, Sister Mary Celesta, Sister of Charity of Halifax and brothers, Henry, Angus, David, Father William ‘Bill’ and Thomas. The remains will be resting at Bethany, beginning Tuesday, July 5th at 1:15 p.m. A Celebration of Vigil will be held on the same evening at 7:30. Liturgy of Christian Burial will take place on Wednesday, July 6th at 2 p.m. in Bethany chapel. Arrangements are under the direction of Curry’s Funeral Home of Antigonish. Henry MacLeod Born In: Boston MA Born: February 26th, 1930 Passed in: Sydney Passed on: June 28th, 2016 It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Henry MacLeod, at the age of 86. Henry passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 28, 2016 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born on Feb. 26, 1930 in Boston MA, he was the son of the late Donald and Catherine MacLeod. The family moved to Plaister Mines in 1931, where Henry was raised. Later he married and lived in North Sydney with his wife and two children. Henry worked at Marine Atlantic and National Sea. Henry is survived by his wife, Norma Jean (Carmichael); daughter, Katherine Mary (Kathy); grandson, Andrew; granddaughters, Darrian and Danielle and brother, Kenny. Besides his parents, Henry was predeceased by his son, Darryl; brothers, Donald, Harvey, Winston and his sister, Margaret ‘Peggy’. Service will be held at the Alderwood Rest Home on Tuesday, July 5th at 2 p.m. with Rev Allison Etter officiating with a private burial afterwards at the Highland Cemetery on Plaister Mines Road. Donations can be made in his memory to The Heart and Stroke Foundation or to the Alderwood Rest Home in Baddeck. Services will be under the direction of MacAskill Funeral Home, Baddeck.
