Brophy - 56 yrs Michael Joseph Penny - 95 yrs Leonard Michael “Len” MacMullin - 68 yrs Elizabeth June “Betty” McCormick Whitney Pier It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of Betty McCormick, 70, on Sunday, Nov. 6, 2016 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Sydney, Betty was the daughter of the late Vincent and Margaret Martha (Peters) Brophy. Betty was a devoted catholic and member of Holy Redeemer parish. In her earlier years, Betty worked for the Kmart Canada leaving after 15 years of service to take care of her ailing father, Vince. She was a loving and caring lady and will always be remembered for being everyone’s mother. To Betty family was always the most important thing in life and she would never see another person go without. Betty is survived by her loving son, Colin and precious daughter in-law, Tracy Sampson. She is also survived sisters, Patsy (Walter), High River, Alberta and Jeanie, Maine, USA; brothers, Tommy (Janet), West Haven, Connecticut, Terry, Sydney Mines, Donnie, Sydney, Bobby (Mable), Courtney, BC, and Vince, New Hampshire; many nieces, nephews and “Nanny’s Baby”, Sampson. Besides her parents, Betty is predeceased by her husband, Joseph Sylvester McCormick; sister, Judy; brother, Frank and nephews, Frank M and Tommy Jr. As per Betty’s wishes there will be no visitation for cremation has taken place. Memorial service for the late Betty McCormick will be held at the Pier Community Funeral Home, All Faith Chapel on Wed., Nov. 9, 2016 at 10 a.m. with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. Following the service a reception will be held in the funeral home reception area. Burial will take place in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Betty may be made to Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton. Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of Darcy Rideout in conjunction with the Pier Community Funeral Home. EMMA GILLIS Born In: NEW WATERFORD Passed in: NEW WATERFORD Passed on: November 6th, 2016 It is with heavy hearts that we, the family of Emma Gillis, announce her passing on Nov. 6, 2016 at New Waterford Consolidated Hospital. Born in New Waterford, she was a daughter of the late Allan and Mary Agnes Graham. Mom dedicated her life to her five children and spoke of them with great pride. She had a wonderful sense of humor that she shared with everyone she met. Mom was an avid Blue Jays fan and at the age of 92, still enjoyed watching them play. Surviving are her children, Heather McKenzie, Norma Gillis, Gwendolyn (Alex) Gouthro, Angus (Elaine) Gillis, all of New Waterford and Bruce (Wanda) Gillis, Mira; sister, Doleena Syms, New Waterford; brother, Bernard Graham, Sparwood, Alberta; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Emma was predeceased by sisters, Mayme, Gertie, June and Noreen; brothers, Bobby, Billy, Charles, Dougie, Richard and Lester. There will be no visitation or funeral service. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. Michael Theodore 'Teddy' MacNeil We regret to announce the passing of Michael Theodore (Teddy) MacNeil, 71, on Friday, November 4, 2016, at home, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Bay St. Lawrence on October 1, 1945, he was the son of the late John James (Johnny) and Jane (Janie) MacNeil. Teddy was a pipefitter at Union Local 682 for many years of his life. He also worked for the Dept. of Public Works for many years. He will always be remembered for his love of fiddle music, his easy going personality, and his willingness to help others at any given time. He also loved playing cards, socializing, and had a passion for sports, especially the Toronto Blue Jays and Maple Leafs. “I will always remember how many nights I spent at the trailer watching hockey, playing cards, and spending quality time together. He was a second father to me for sure, and I’m glad I got to spend the last five days of his life with him.” Grandson, Samuel MacNeil. Teddy is survived by his children, Tracy Fraser, Johnny MacNeil, Troy MacNeil and Francis MacNeil; 5 grandsons and his only granddaughter, Ava Marie MacNeil, who held a special place in his heart up until his last breath. He is also survived by brothers, Wendell MacNeil (Winkie), Francis Leo MacNeil (Fanny), John Thomas MacNeil (J.T. BlackJack), Murdoch Cleitus MacNeil (Keiths), and 10 nieces and nephews. Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late and Ted and Mary (MacDonald) Snow. He was a member of St. Theresa’s parish, Sydney. Joe was a quiet man who loved his work serving the public at Agnew Surpass; his days as a youth in Big Pond and his times on the Bras d’Or with his family. In winter time, Joe provided outdoor skating for the entire neighbourhood with his ice making skills. He is survived by his wife, the former Theresa ‘Tessie’ Wall; daughter, Trina; son, Joseph; sisters, Doreen (Lorway) MacDougall, Joan Butts, Carolyn (Dennis) Murphy, Theresa Gilliard; brothers, Teddy Snow, Brian (Cindy) Snow; aunt, Ruby Skinner; brother-in-law, Donald ‘Brother’ MacNeil and by numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sisters, Ann Marie MacNeil and Jean Snow; sister-in-law, Rhoda Snow and brother-in-law, Max Gilliard. There will be no visitation for the late Mr. Snow. RUTH ANN MACKINNON CORBETT It is with much sadness that we, the family of Ruth Ann (MacKinnon) Corbett, announce the sudden death of Ann, on Tuesday, Nov. 1 in Brantford, Ontario. Just four weeks ago her and her husband, Jim spent some time with her sisters and staying at her sister, Phyllis Jackman’s home. Ann is survived by her husband, Jim; sisters, Phyllis (Art) Jackman and Shirley (Hamilton) MacNeil; brothers, Bud (Joan) and Ralph (Helen) MacKinnon and sister-in-law Joan Corbett. She was predeceased by her parents, Anita and Jim MacKinnon of North Sydney and her only son John David. She will be laid to rest alongside her cherished son in Thornton, Ontario on Tuesday Nov. 8, 2016.
