Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late James and Marie (Boone) Thomas. He was employed with the DEVCO Railroad Company until his retirement. Mark enjoyed darts and out socializing with a crowd. He and Leona loved dancing, they would light up the dance floor. Mark enjoyed watching Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy each night. He is survived by his daughters, Linda (Cecil) Hodder, Catalone, Jennifer Thomas (Cory), Reserve Mines; grandchildren, Brad (Wanda) Blunden, Mira, Celia, Colleen (Durrell MacLeod) and Patrick Hodder, Halifax; great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Easton Blunden, Mira, Darius and Damien MacLeod, Halifax; brother, Aubrey Thomas, Alberta; brother-in-law, Blaise (Anne) Cooke, Chickopee. Mass., several nieces and a special nephew, Allan (Sharon) Cooke. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his loving wife, Leona (Cooke) Thomas; sisters, Gloria Burta, Rosie MacKenzie and Elizabeth MacNeil; brothers, Pete, Jimmy, Sandy, Bill and Terry; sister-in-law, Catherine; brothers-in-law, Eric and Bill. Cremation has taken place. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of … Joseph William 'Billy' Perry Born In: Glace Bay Passed in: Glace Bay Passed on: March 27th, 2016 It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Joseph William Perry, age 58, on Sunday, March 27, 2016 at his residence. Born in Glace Bay, Billy was the son of the late Jack and Doris (Clyburne) Perry. Billy was recently employed at Home Hardware, Glace Bay, where he enjoyed meeting people and helping customers. Billy had a kind and compassionate heart and was always there to lend a helping hand. He had a passion for carpentry and painting and possessed a great ability to fix things. Billy also had a great love for animals. Billy was a kind and loving husband, father, brother and friend. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Pam (Gilmet) Perry, son, Garrett (Erin), daughter, Sarah McLeod (Joey), brothers, Wayne Perry (Darlene), Glace Bay, Robert Johnson (Sandy), Jerry Monroe, both in New Glasgow, sisters, Barbara Allison (Francis), Margie Cann (Everett), both in Glace Bay, Beth Cunningham, Diana Fraser (Clarence), both in Stellerton, Mary Dye in Toronto, many nieces, nephews, best friends, Kevin and Maureen Murray and family and Hector and Darlene Debison and family. Also surviving are Billy’s in-laws, Karen Kennedy (Peter), Sam Gilmet (Wendy), Bobby (Christie), Helen Toomey (Gerald), Darleen Gilmet, Mike Boone and his furry little companion, his dog, Tyson. Besides his parents, Billy was predeceased by his in-laws, Sam and Olga Gilmet, Walter Gilmet, Joey Gilmet, Linda Boone and Janet Gilmet. According to Billy’s wishes, cremation has taken place. John Robert Walter Mahoney Born In: Sydney Born: April 29th, 1953 Passed in: Sydney Passed on: March 27th, 2016 Say not in grief ‘He is no more”, but live in the thankfulness that he was. -Hebrew Proverb It is with broken hearts that we, the family, announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather and brother, Robert Mahoney, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney on March 27, 2016, with his family by his side. Born in Sydney on April 29, 1953, Robert was the son of the late John Richard & Deloris (Woodill) Mahoney. Robert was a well known business man, and during his lifetime owned and operated several businesses such as Quicky Sign Rentals, Armour Guard, Tri-M Rentals; but took great and personal pride in JR Mahoney Ltd. Over the years Robert became the face and driving force behind JR Mahoney Ltd. Robert was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, the Dobson Yacht Club and one of the founding members of The Cape Breton Poker Run. He supported organizations such as School Breakfast programs, Drug Awareness programs and Children’s Christmas Dinners. Robert enjoyed recreational activities such as boating, hunting & spending time at his cottage with family and friends. Robert is survived by the love of his life, Lana (Campbell) Mahoney,Howie Center; daughter, Amanda (Kevin) Lacroix, CFB Greenwood; son, Jonathan (Rebecca) Mahoney, Howie Center; grandchildren, Olivia, Sophia, Connor and Mason. Mark Christopher Holloway Passed in: Sydney Passed on: March 28th, 2016 We regret to announce the sudden passing of Mark Christopher Holloway, 37, on Monday, March 28, 2016 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. He is survived by his wife, Diana (MacLellan) and stepchildren, Michael and Alyssa. Born on April 29, 1979, he was the son of William and Bernice (Cousins) Holloway; also survived by brother, Billy (Nikki) and Noelle MacDonald (Marvin); paternal grandmother, Mary Holloway; special friends, Donald Frances and Lloyd Marsh, a number of nieces and nephews and aunts and uncles. In his younger years he was very active in sports and was an outdoor enthusiast. He loved hunting, fishing and camping. Chris loved to cook and followed his passion by cooking in several restaurants over his life. He had a love for life. Chris was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Charles and Mary (Pero) Cousins and paternal grandfather, William Holloway. A wake will take place on Thursday, March 31 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Fillmore & Whitman Funeral Home. John Norbert Schmid Born In: Sydney Born: June 7th, 1944 Passed in: Dartmouth Passed on: March 21st, 2016 It is with great sadness that the family announce the passing of John Norbert Schmid on March 21, 2016, at Dartmouth General Hospital, with his loving wife Corinne at his side. John was born in Sydney June 7,1944, the son of the late George and Henrietta (Tobin) Schmid. He graduated from Sydney Academy, St. Xavier University and TUNS as an architectural and environmental designer. His career with contract work was varied and very interesting from studying the effects of workers in isolation in Labrador to working as a liaison and supervisor when building high rises in Calgary for The Chandler Kennedy Architectural Group of New York. John's passion was art and he was an accomplished artist painting in oil and acrylic. He sold his work in painting, photography and sculpture at local shows and shops. He shared his love of fine food, wine, art, renovating older homes and travel with his wife of 12 years. John is survived by his wife, Corinne (MacDonald); her daughters, Kara (Peter Campbell), Amy LeMoine (Daniel Morrison), Meaghan LeMoine (Shane Ballard); as well as grandchildren, Adam, Reg and Grace Campbell, Johnny LeMoine and Everett Ballard. He was a much-loved brother of George (Elaine) Schmid, Theresa Brenner of Ontario and Walburga (John) Belliveau of British Columbia. He was much loved by his nephews, George Colin Schmid and Michael Belliveau and nieces, Cindy Hunt, Helen Brenner, Anita Fisher and Shiloh Belliveau. His trips to visit his first cousins Hans Peter, Bernard and Rita in Germany will also be missed by them. John will be especially missed by his sister-in-law, Glenda and brother-in-law, Daniel McKeough, with whom many holidays and celebrations were spent. John served many years as treasurer, director and historian of his beloved C.B. Canoe and Geographical Society. They will raise a tribute to him in their own way. John had a wide circle of close friends who will truly miss him. A celebration of John's life will take place Friday, April 1, at 4 p.m. at United Heritage Church, 500 Charlotte St. with Rev. Rosemary Godin officiating. Family flowers only please and if one wishes an act of kindness or donation to your favourite charity can be made in his memory.
