Winston, born in Port Morien, was predeceased by his mother Catherine Nesbitt in childhood, his father Hugh Smith and very close Cousin Sara Tomada. Winston was a devoted husband of 53 years to Chrissy (Cressie Fowler), a wonderful father to his children, Cathy (John) Neary, Darryn Smith, and Cecil (Lisa) Smith, and a loving and proud 'grampie' to Gabrielle, Drew, Mark, and Colby, whom he adored greatly. Winston had great pride in his birth town of Port Morien and shared this pride in great stories about the community. Winston started his working career on horse and buggy making deliveries for Hopper’s Grocery Store store in Port Morien. Winston had a great sense of humour and would often say his family was so poor growing up that they could not afford a middle name for him. Winston had the great fortune to enjoy 22 years of retirement following a lengthy career with City Printers and enjoyed playing cards and crafting, and watching hockey and baseball. Winston had an enormous capacity for creativity, turning everyday objects into art. Winston was an avid baseball player in his youth. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Patten Funeral Home, there will be no visitation, a private family service will be held at a later date. You will forever be missed. Donald John Roper Born In: Glace Bay Passed in: Reserve Mines Passed on: February 19th, 2016 It is with profound sadness that we the family of Donald John Roper announce his passing at his residence on Friday, Feb. 19, 2016, at the age of 72. Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of Ann Catherine (MacIntyre) Roper and the late Donald Smith Roper of Bridgeport. He was a longtime resident of Reserve Mines and was a member of St. Joseph’s parish. In his early years, Donald worked for Eastern Bakeries and Kenmount Ford. He later worked in construction and formed his own company; Roper Construction, then D. Roper Services. Donnie had been involved in volunteer organizations throughout his life, such as the Dominion, Reserve, Gardiner Kinsmen Club, where he had served as president. As well as his mother Ann; Donald is survived by his daughter Donna and son-in-law Barry Rogers; his two precious grandsons, Zachary and Lucas Rogers; who will miss their wonderful poppa terribly. Poppa treasured the times he spent with his boys whether riding on the motorcycle or fixing things in the garage. He will also be sadly missed by brothers, Ernie (Norma), Glace Bay, Doug (Brenda), Camrose, Alberta; brothers in-law, Tommy Reid, Amherst, Brian (Mevy) Reid, Glace Bay, Jim (Sonia) Reid, Arichat, Keith (Jan) Reid, Etobicoke, Ont.; sisters in-law, Margie Brufatto, Dominion, Viola (Greg) O’Leary, Reserve Mines, Diane (Terry) Roberts, Mira, Anita (Tom) McMullin, Lingan and Melissa Villa, Glace Bay. Also surviving are aunts, Lena Sweeney, New Waterford and Calista Poirier, Dominion. 'Uncle Donnie' will be deeply missed by numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Besides his father, Donald Smith Roper, he was also predeceased by his loving wife of 48 years, Norma (Reid), infant daughter, Ann-Margaret, brother, Wayne, brothers in-law, Jimmy Villa, Richard Brufatto and sister in-law, Karen Reid. Visitation for Donald will be held Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2016 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A funeral mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2016 in St. Joseph’s Church in Reserve Mines, with Fr. Daniel Boudreau officiating. A luncheon will follow in the church hall. Interment will be held at a later date in the parish cemetery. Donations in Donnie’s memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Canadian Diabetes Association. Joseph ‘Joe’ Anthony Dziubek Born In: Whitney Pier Born: March 17th, 1939 Passed in: Whitney Pier Passed on: February 19th, 2016 It is with sadness we announce the passing of Joseph Anthony Dziubek on Friday Feb. 19, 2016 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Whitney Pier on March 17, 1939, Joe was the son of the late Stephen and Anne (Yokubowski) Dziubek. Joe spent all of his life in Whitney Pier and was very proud of his Polish Heritage. He was employed with Nova Scotia Power from 1956 until his retirement in 1999. Joe made many friends along the way most notably, Gary Murphy, Donald Durling and Howard Buckland, whom he spent a lot of quality time with after retirement. Most of all, Joe enjoyed spending time with his brother, Frank, going to hockey games and tending to the gardens in Boulardrie. He will be missed by all who knew him. Joe is survived by his brother, Frank; sister-in-law, Donna (Farrell); niece and goddaughter, Shauna Dziubek and other nieces, Stephanie (Kevin) Murphy and Sherry (Logan) Anderson. Joe is also surived by his grandnephews, Stephen, Landon, Avery and Keaton; grandnieces, Shealynn, Hanna and Lily; as well as many cousins and good friends. Visitation for the late Joseph ‘Joe’ Anthony Dziubek will be held today (Monday) at the Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service to celebrate the life of Joe will be on Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2016 at 11 a.m. in the Pier Community Funeral Home, All Faith Chapel with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. Following the service light refreshments will be held in the funeral home reception area. Interment will take place at Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Joe may be made to the St. Mary’s Polish Church Fund or SPCA - Cape Breton Branch. We would like to thank Palliative Care Unit staff of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Dr. Janusz Wawrzyszyn, Dr. Mark Sampson and Dr. David Wong, for the care given to Joe during his illness. Burgess Havelock Jr. Penny Born In: Sydney Mines Born: May 26th, 1969 Passed in: Sydney Passed on: February 17th, 2016 It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Burgess Havelock Penny Jr. who passed away Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2016 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Sydney Mines on May 26, 1969, he was the son of Burgess Sr. and the late Alice Penny. Burgess was a jack of all trades, from mechanics to renovations and construction. He took great pride in the seemingly impossible projects he took on, but with skillful hands he always had beautiful results. He could always be found with his Tims, a smoke and a long-winded war story. Burgess was a wild soul who loved his near and dear greatly. Burgess is survived by his wife Jennifer Hill; devoted partner Amanda Watson Dominix.; children, Burgess Penny, Alana Penny, Star Penny, Nicolas Watson Penny; stepchildren, Andrew Dominix, Sabin Dominix, Seth Domini; his father Burgess Penny Sr.; biological mother, Patricia Penny; brothers and sisters, Alice and Simon (Chicken) Feit, Jonathan Penny, Russell MacLellan (Nicole Anthony), Brenda McAdam, Kathleen (Nikki) Serroul, Joey Serroul, and Jean Penny; close friends, Mary and Dave Fitzgerald and many nieces and nephews. Besides his mother Alice Penny, Burgess was predeceased by his biological father Joseph (Noonie) Serroul, brothers, Robert Penny and David MacLellan in infancy and brothers-in-law, Billy McAdam and Danny Dunphy. Josephine Aubry Born In: Sydney Mines Passed in: Sydney Passed on: February 14th, 2016 We regret to announce the peaceful death of Josephine (King) Aubry, 82, on Feb. 14, 2016 at Celtic Court, Sydney. Born in Sydney Mines, Josephine was a daughter of the late Annie (Bragg) Riddle and Chesley King. Josephine lived and worked in Los Angeles for 40 years, returning home to Cape Breton to retire in 1991. She was a survivor, having battled breast cancer twice. Josephine is survived by her daughter, Marie MacLeod; granddaughter, Crystal Melvin; sisters, Peg Fiefield, Sackville, N.S., Margaret (Don) Young, Sydney Mines, Elizabeth Weaver, Dartmouth, Phyllis Hillier, Sydney Mines, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by brothers, Percy, Harry, Chesley, Ernie and two brothers in infancy, as well as friend and companion, Merv Stagg. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2016 at the John J. Nugent Firemen’s Center, 1 Elliott St., Sydney Mines with reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Sydney Mines Food Bank, the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of choice.
