Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late James A. and Jennie (McEwan) Boozan. Mick was a coal miner for 31 years. He was an avid bowler, baseball player and in later life a golfer. Mick enjoyed working with stained glass and sitting on the front deck reading. In his youth, for several years, Mick was a member of the Canadian Armed Forces. His grandchildren were his pride and joy; especially his great-grandson, Beau Aubrey. Mick is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Eleanor (Martin) Boozan; daughter, Lori (Terry); son, Carey (Valerie); sister, Audrey Burke (Pat); brothers, Billie (Ann), Andy (Yvonne) Boozan; brother-in-law, Lloyd Layes; two grandchildren, Carey (Kaite), Whitney (Daniel); great-grandson, Beau Aubrey, nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Mick was predeceased by five sisters, Margie Turner (Hardy), Mary Kilgar, Edie Hogg, Jean Williamson and Alma Layes. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Thursday morning from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at 11 a.m., all in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay, Fr. Jake Andrea officiating. Raymond Eric MacAskill Born: March 22nd, 1945 Passed in: Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada Passed on: March 19th, 2016 We, the family of Raymond Eric MacAskill, of North River, most recently of Sydney, regret to announce his passing on Saturday, March 19, 2016, at the Halifax Infirmary. Born March 22, 1945, he was a son of the late Duncan and Christine (MacDonald) MacAskill. Until retirement, Eric was employed with Fisheries & Oceans. An avid outdoors man, he enjoyed fishing and hunting. Eric is survived by his sons, Raymond (Danyelle), Sydney, Robert (Nadine), New Minas, David (Jeanette), Saint John, N. George Skinner Burt Born In: Boxey Nfld Born: August 24th, 1921 Passed in: Sydney Passed on: March 19th, 2016 It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of George Skinner Burt, age 94, beloved husband for 73 years of Sadie Burt, on Saturday, March 19, 2016 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Boxey, Nfld., Aug. 24, 1921, he was the son of the late Thomas and Phoebe (Skinner) Burt. George spent his younger years on the sea. He worked as a fisherman, sailing aboard fishing boats, supply vessels, and with the Merchant Marines for a period of time during the Second World War. George worked at the Halifax Shipyard for a short time before moving to North Sydney and finding work at the steel plant in Sydney, where he remained for nearly 40 years until his retirement. George was a man of great strength and faith who never gave up. He was a devoted husband and loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was an active member of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church in North Sydney and a former member and Past Grand Master of Fulton Orange Lodge. He is survived by his wife, Sadie (Burton) Burt; by his three daughters, Evelyn (Doug) Schaller, Margaret (Don) Cowan, Susan (Fred) Rahey; his two sons, George (Donna) Burt, Tom Burt (Margaret); by his 11 grandchildren Christine Elliott, Ian and Colin Cowan, Vaughn, Leah and Lina Burt, Rebecca and Stephen Rahey, Michael, Daniel and Katherine Burt; five great-grandchildren, Gemma, and Evan Deal, Ocean Cowan, Kinsley and Kaelyn Burt; by his two sisters, Susanna Blagdon, Vera (Edwin) Bruce and several nieces and nephews. Born in Sydney Mines on Aug. 2, 1923, he was the eldest son of the late Peter and Anne (Goodwin) Romeo. Frank proudly served with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders in France during the D-Day invasion at Juno Beach. He retired from the Canadian Coast Guard College as supply officer after 38 years of public service. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Bessie (Serroul); daughters, Patricia (Bill), Connie, Barbara (Raymond) and Norma; sons, Frank (Carla), Terry (Wanda), Ronnie (Tammy) and Peter (Mark); 14 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He is also survived by brothers, Angus (Eileen) and Stanley (Bernice); sisters, Pauline, Ethel, Lauretta (Ken), Theresa (Scott) and Marguerite; brothers-in-law, John and Russell; sisters-in-law, Eileen, Madonna and Marie. Ronald George Edwards Passed on: March 21st, 2016 Passed peacefully March 21, 2016 at Beach Grove Home of Ron Edwards of Cornwall, age 85 years. Beloved husband of Barbara (nee Saunders) and loving father of Kirk (Sharon), Sonia MacVicar (Scott), Troy, Perry (Karen), Wade (Debbie) and Tania MacCormick (Mike). Ron will be lovingly remembered by 13 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and his sister, June Burke. He was predeceased by his parents, George and Georgia Edwards; son, Dean and brother, Paul. Ron had a long and successful 45 year retail career with S.S. Kresge and Kmart, managing stores across the country. His longest tenure as at store 5405 in Sydney, N.S., where he had built one of the more successful stores in the company. He was known for walking his store constantly and being accessible and available to his staff and his customers. In addition to business Ron was a man of faith and was involved in his church, both in Sydney at Faith Baptist and in Charlottetown at Grace Baptist. He served as deacon, preached and gave witness to his faith every day of his life. Ron was a loving husband, brother, son and father. He mentored and guided his children in line with his faith and values. He will be loved forever and sorely missed. A longtime respected resident of Scotchtown, Joseph was the son of the late Louis and Anthonia (Horwath) Van Doninck. Joe was a retired coal miner and veteran of the Second World War. Survived by children, Louis (Gloria), Joseph (Rose), Francis Martin, John (Dolores); sister, Norma Drapeau; brother, Bernie; 16 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Joe was predeceased by his wife, Tillie (Bourgeois); stepson, Harold Penny (Marcella); stepdaughter, Jean Penny Knapman; sisters, Annie, Lily; brothers, Frank and John (MacDonald); sons-in-law, John Martin and Bob Knapman. Born in North Sydney, on May 10, 1962, he was the son of Georgina (MacInnis) Nichol, North Sydney and the late William Nichol. Phil was a well known resident of North Sydney and was often spotted downtown and at Tim Hortons. He enjoyed attending Crossroads in Sydney and was a member of Holy Family parish in Sydney Mines. Besides his mother, Georgina, he is survived by his brother, Bill (Debbie) Nichol and his sister, June Nichol, both of North Sydney. There will be no visitation by request.
