Born in Sydney, Eddie was the son of the late Bill and Katie (MacNeil) Blanchard. Eddie lived a simple life. He worked at Sydney Steel, coke ovens until his retirement at the age of 65. Eddie loved fishing and cooking especially, spaghetti and meatball for his family and friends. Eddie had a special bond with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, when they needed a drive; Poppy’s Taxi was always available. He will be remembered by his family and friends for being caring, loving and most of all, for being very special. Eddie is survived by his spouse, Kay Ongo; children, Gerard (Will), Mark (Rita), Bonnie (Terrance), Joe (Tevis), Shane and Sylvia (Pat); grandchildren, Matthew (Erica), Michael, Ashley (Justin), Tyler, Andrew, Justin, Chris, Cory, Jordan, Kayla, Britany, Daniel, Michelle (Jason), Devin, Savannah, Lance, Tanya (Ryan), Kyle (Darlene), Wayne Joe, Ashley Washbrooke and many great-grandchildren; sisters, Thelma Blanchard, Pearl Dawson, Mary Rose, Theresa Vanechuck and Louise Prestara; brother, John Blanchard; as well as several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Eddie was predeceased by his son, Wayne, grandson, Ryan and brothers, Bill, Tommy and Joseph. Visitation for the late John Edward ‘Eddie’ Blanchard will be held at the Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street) on Tuesday, March 8, 2016 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, March 9, 2016 at 10 a.m. in Holy Redeemer Church, Whitney Pier, with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. Following the mass a reception will be held at the Pier Community Funeral Home, Whitney Pier. A private family burial will take place at a later date. Ethel 'Bernice' Stewart Born In: Glace Bay Born: July 10th, 1935 Passed in: Glace Bay Passed on: March 3rd, 2016 It is with heartfelt sadness that we the family announce the passing of Ethel 'Bernice' Stewart on March 3, 2016 at the Glace Bay Hospital with loving family at her side. Born in Glace Bay on July 10, 1935 to the late Everett and Lena (Buchanan) Grant. Bernice was a graduate of the 1957 class at the school of Nursing in the Glace Bay General Hospital. Her career led her to the Sunny Brook Hospital in Ontario. She worked there for 10 years. While in Ontario she fell in love with another Cape Bretoner, Angus and then together returned to Glace Bay. Bernice then began and finished a 37-year career at the Glace Bay Hospital. For many years she was a member of the Glace Bay Ladies Auxiliary, the Alumni. She volunteered at the gift shop at the hospital where she was the treasurer for numerous years. Where she found the most pleasure in life, was spending time with her granddaughter Ava. Bernice is survived by her daughter Jennifer (Troy), son Stephen (Deborah), granddaughters Ava, Jennifer and Lacey, great-grandchildren Adelina and Madelyn and sister Mary-Ellen (Al). Besides parents, she was predeceased by husband Angus, sisters Martha and Rhoda, brothers Billy and Everett. Visitation for Bernice will be held on Tuesday, March 8, 2016, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Patten Funeral Home, 71 Union St., Glace Bay. Funeral service will held on Wednesday, March 9 at St. Paul’s Prebyterian Church on Brookside Street, with Rev. Allan MacLellan officiating. Donations may be made to St. Paul’s building fund. Olive (Stevens) Hulford Born In: Sydney Born: March 16th, 1930 Passed on: March 3rd, 2016 The children of Olive Louise (Stevens) Hulford of Sydney River wish to share the news of the peaceful passing of our dear mother on Thursday, March 3, 2016; her loving son Tom was at her side. Olive was born in Sydney on March 16, 1930; she was the daughter of the late Naomi (Pitcher) and Benjamin Stevens. Olive was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. In her early years, she worked for the 'Telephone Company' and Woolco department store and spent many years as a stay-at-home mom. Our mother was an expert seamstress, quilter, and baker; she loved exercising, gardening, camping, bowling, playing darts and curling with our dad. A long time member of the Sydney River United Protestant Church, mom was past-president of the United Church Women’s UCW Guild. Olive is survived by her devoted children Catherine (Reg) Johnston, Glace Bay, Thomas 'Tom' B. Hulford, Howie Center and Janis (Cliff) Seville, St. Albert, Alberta and her brother John (Olga) Stevens, Sydney. She was very proud of her grandchildren Erin Johnston (Darren Sillers), Alison Johnston (Chad Greaves), Taya (Chad) Alexander, Curtis Seville, Justin Seville, Jay-Anne (Greg) Trela, Chrysten (Ken) Jennings, all of Alberta; Ryan Hulford and Thomas W. (Andrea) Hulford of Halifax and 10 great-grandchildren in Alberta. She is also survived by her honorary daughter Mary Doncaster, her very special companion George Anderson and several nieces and nephews. Our mother was predeceased by our dad, her loving husband of 55 years, George T. Hulford in 2005, as well as her parents and mother and father-in-law Annie (Baxter) and George W. Hulford. She was also predeceased by her dear sisters Marion (John) Sheppard, Lillian (Ralph) Frost, Eva (Lloyd) MacPhail and Marie 'Queenie' (Donald) Morrison, two sisters in infancy, Muriel and Evelyn Stevens, brothers George (Millie) Stevens, Donald Stevens, Harold Stevens and sister-in-law Margaret 'Peggy' (Douglas) Farquharson. Mom was recently predeceased by her best friend, Betty MacIntosh. Special thanks are extended to the staff of the Cove Guest Home for their wonderful care of our mom. There will be no visitation. A memorial service and celebration of our mother’s life will be held at a later date. Memorial donations can be made to the United Protestant Church, Sydney River UCW Guild or the Cove Guest Home. Rev. 21:4 Sarah 'Sally' Crawford Born In: Birch Grove Passed in: Tower Road Passed on: March 3rd, 2016 It is with great sadness that we the family announce the passing of 'Sally' Crawford of Birch Grove Road (formerly of Campbells Lane) on March 3, 2016 at the Cove Guest Home surrounded by her loving family. Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Ellen (Rideout) Campbell. She enjoyed singing and loved her gardening, she took great pride in both. She is survived by her husband James, daughters, Corinne, Cheryl and Carol Anne, stepdaughter Elizabeth, stepsons Kenn and James, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, siblings, Fred, William and Claudia. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by daughter Cathy. As per Sally’s wishes there will be no visitation or service, cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Patten Funeral Home. Burial will take place in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens at a later date. Donations in Sally’s memory can be made to the Alzheimer’s Society.
