Douglas was a loving, compassionate and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. His family was his greatest passion, his love for them was immeasurable. Douglas took great pride in his children, taking every opportunity to brag about their accomplishments. His granddaughters Kaitlyn, Vanessa and Zoe were referred to as ‘Pappa’s Angels’ and held a very tight spot in his heart. His great-grandson Jayden brought him many smiles and special days. The biggest space in his heart was held by his wife of 50 years, Anna. Douglas and Anna made beautiful memories during their 50 years, either by hosting friends and family at their home for many dinners, or dancing the night away. Douglas and Anna and their children spent many years as ‘campers’ on Ben Eoin Beach. These were among some of the happiest days for Douglas, he made many life long friends on the beach and was affectionately known as ‘Mr. Hayride’ to those who camped there. He was an avid fisherman and hunter in his early years. Douglas also enjoyed his days as a volunteer at Maple Hill Manor. He retired from Devco in 1995, until he no longer was capable due to illness. He is well known for his courageous battle with cancer, first being diagnosed at age 50. To say he was a warrier is an understatement. Douglas fought every diagnosis and treatment head on and with determination. His eternal optimism and courage were his keys to winning each fight. Most will remember Douglas for his infectious smile. Douglas enjoyed meeting and greeting people, never shy to start up a conversation, this often resulting in a new friendship. His warmth and humility touched many, many people. Douglas was often referred to as an ‘inspiration’, ‘hero’, to all he was a friend. Douglas is survived by his loving wife Anna (Comelli); daughters, Andrea (Rick), Shelley (Eldon), Leanne (John); sister Sadie (Dave) McLean, Glace Bay; brothers, Alexander (Ruth), Lake Anslie, Henry (Melita), Jackie (Charlene), Ronnie, George (Cathy), all of New Waterford, Glenn (Evelyn ), Glace Bay; grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Vanessa, Zoe, Lana (Wayne), Fort McMurray, Joshua (Vera), Edmonton; great-grandchildren Jayden, Sky, Ivy and Oliver; special cousin Gloria (Esley) Sweeney, Montreal. Douglas was predeceased by his parents, John and Mary (Copan), brothers, Krystal and John Francis, in infancy and in-laws Beppo and Tanzy Comelli. By Douglas’s request, cremation has taken place and a funeral service to celebrate Douglas’s life will take place Monday, March 28 at 11 a.m. in Calvin United Church with Rev. Duncan Roach officiating, followed by a luncheon at the KOC, Plummer Avenue.
