Born in Sydney, Johnnie resided in Edmonton, but, his heart was always in Cape Breton. Johnnie was predeceased by his wife, Francine Washbrook; also by parents, Betty and Edward Dawe; sisters, Lillian and Linda. Johnnie is survived by children, Matthew, Jay and Cindy of Edmonton; sisters, Elizabeth Tuppert (Rick) of Dartmouth, Diane Hansen (Roddie), Debbie Moore (Dan) of Mira, Patrica of Sydney; brothers, Wilfred, Joe (Susan) of Sydney; nieces, nephews and grandnieces. William 'Bill' Bramwell Born In: Glace Bay Passed in: Sydney Passed on: March 2nd, 2016 We, the family of William 'Bill' Bramwell, regret to announce his passing on March 2, 2016 at Harbourstone Enhanced Care Center. Born in Glace Bay, he was the son the late William and Eva (Smith) Bramwell. Bill was a hard working man who loved his family dearly, he served in peacekeeping missions overseas in Cyprus, Bill was also a coal miner, bus driver, and a friend of Bill W. He also greatly enjoyed hunting, fishing, a good game of Tarabish, he was also a wonderful baseball player and coached for many years and cheering for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Bill is survived by his children, Mark (Alice), Rachelle (Mike), Greg (Cathy), Michael (Silvia) and Shelley; grandchildren, Nikki, Ashley, Natalie, Adam, Gregory, Brandon, Jayden, Nathan, Samantha, Bailey, Jessica, Sarah, and Coady; great-grandchildren, Emma, Jayce and Hunter; siblings, Kent (Ronnie) and Linda Aucoin. Besides his parents, Bill was predeceased by his wife, Nora and brother, Terry Bramwell. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the wonderful staff of Harbourstone Enhanced Care Center, for all their care and compassion they showed Bill during his time there. Ethel 'Bernice' Stewart Born In: Glace Bay Born: July 10th, 1935 Passed in: Glace Bay Passed on: March 3rd, 2016 It is with heartfelt sadness that we the family announce the passing of Ethel 'Bernice' Stewart on March 3, 2016 at the Glace Bay Hospital, with loving family at her side. Born in Glace Bay on July 10, 1935 to the late Everett and Lena (Buchanan) Grant. Bernice was a graduate of the 1957 class at the School of Nursing in the Glace Bay General Hospital. Her career led her to the Sunny Brook Hospital in Ontario. She worked there for 10 years. While in Ontario she fell in love with another Cape Bretoner, Angus and then together returned to Glace Bay. Bernice then began and finished a 37 years career at the Glace Bay Hospital. For many years she was a member of the Glace Bay Ladies Auxiliary, the Alumni. She volunteered at the gift shop at the hospital where she was the treasurer for numerous years. Where she found the most pleasure in life, was spending time with her granddaughter, Ava. Bernice is survived by her daughter, Jennifer (Troy); son, Stephen (Deborah); granddaughters, Ava, Jennifer and Lacey; great-grandchildren, Adelina and Madelyn and sister, Mary-Ellen (Al). Beside her parents, she was predeceased by husband, Angus; sisters, Martha and Rhoda; brothers, Billy and Everett. Visitation for Bernice will be held on Tuesday, March 8, 2016 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Patten Funeral Home, 71 Union St., Glace Bay. Michael Hugh Gouthro Born In: North Sydney Born: July 7th, 1959 Passed in: North Sydney Passed on: March 6th, 2016 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear father, grandfather, brother and friend, Michael Hugh Gouthro, age 56, on Sunday, March 6, 2016, at the Northside General Hospital, following a brief battle with cancer. Born in North Sydney, on July 7, 1959, he was the son of the late Hilton Charles and Theresa Lorraine (MacLean) Gouthro. Michael worked in construction and was a member of Local #92 Labourer Union in Ft. McMurray for over 35 years. He was a very kind hearted person, always lending a helping hand to others. He was a great fan of the Toronto Blue Jays, loved going fishing, was the official score keeper at family washer toss games and was a volunteer at Our Lady of Sorrows Parish and ballfield. Mike loved spending time with family and friends, telling stories and having a laugh. The most cherished in his life were his daughter, Sheila and grandkids, Coen “Little Buddy” and Jada “Little One”. He is survived by his daughter, Sheila (Dwayne Green), Ft. McMurray; grandchildren, Coen and Jada; brothers, Ricky (Mary), Joey, Tim, all of North Sydney, Sheldon, Halifax; sisters, Rosemary (Hector Campbell), Sydney Mines and Michelle (Jonathan MacDonald), Long Island and by several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents, Mike was predeceased by his brother Johnny 'Max' and nephew John Edward. Visitation for Mike will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Jake Andrea officiating. Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Vera Moore of Sydney. She is survived by her loving husband, Kenneth Tarr; siblings, Irene Moore and Derek Moore of Sydney; several brothers and sisters-in-law and nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by the center of her life her twin sons, Philip Robert Tarr and James Franklin Tarr, as well as mother and father-in-law, Frank and Vivian Tarr, Sydney. Cheryl’s life was dedicated to caring for her family as well as her cats, Lucy, Benny and Tiger. Even many stray and feral cats in the neighborhood were attracted to her door because of her loving kindness to them. Cheryl’s kindness and compassion was extended to all she met who were in need and she would do whatever she could for them. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of… Victor Herbert Jones Born In: Glace Bay Passed in: Sydney Passed on: March 4th, 2016 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Victor Jones, age 79 of Gordon Street, Glace Bay on Friday, March 4, 2016 at the Cove Guest Home in Sydney, surrounded by his family. Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Fitz and Frances Albertha (Williams) Jones of Barbados. Victor was employed by Devco for 36 years, most recently as a supervisor, retiring in 1992. He was a member of St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Glace Bay. Victor was an accomplished athlete in his youth, excelling at track and field, rugby and hockey. He was very active in the community and served on various boards including, Glace Bay Central Credit Union, Cape Breton Regional Housing Authority, N.S. Black Cultural Centre, N.S. Human Rights Affirmative Action Committee and the Miner’s Museum. Victor is survived by his two daughters, Lorna Jones, Sydney, Valerie Murphy, Glace Bay; one son, Victor Jr., Calgary, Alta.; grandchildren, Nicole Jones, Victoria, B.C., Victor Murphy, Glace Bay, Damien Johnson, David Jones, Glace Bay and Breigh Jones, Ontario. Victor is also survived by his sisters, Francina 'Mig' (Samuel Taylor), Charleston, South Carolina, Hilda (late Joseph Williams), Teaneck, New Jersey, Violet King, Glace Bay and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Georgina (McCarthy) Jones in 1996 and three brothers, Norman, Leonard and David. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral service officiated by Rev. Edda Grace Ferguson Born In: Sydney Passed in: Colchester Passed on: March 4th, 2016 Edda Grace Ferguson, age 87, Truro, and formerly of Sydney, passed away peacefully on March 4, 2016, in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Sydney, she was a daughter of the late Edward and Grace (Jackson) Phillips. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be Friday from 6-8 p.m., and funeral service will be Saturday at 2 p.m., both in First United Church, Truro, Rev. Valerie Kingsbury officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Old Barns Cemetery. Dorothy Anne Vardy Born In: Louisbourg Passed in: Sydney Passed on: March 2nd, 2016 We, the family of Dorothy Anne Vardy, 73, of Louisbourg, regret to announce her passing on Wednesday, March 2, 2016, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Louisbourg on July 17, 1942, she was the daughter of the late Alexander and Hildegard (Kehoe) MacKeigan. She is survived by her three children, Curtis, Dexter, Cavelle (Frankie); granddaughter, Alexis; brothers, George and Raymond. Besides her parents, Dorothy was predeceased by her husband, Sam; her sister, Monica and her brother, Allison. Dorothy was an incredibly shy person, who was most happy when being kind to animals. As she would have wanted there will be no visitation or funeral service. Cremation has taken place. Burial will be held at a later date in Stella Maris Parish Cemetery. Sarah Ellen 'Sally' Campbell Passed in: Sydney Passed on: March 3rd, 2016 It is with great sadness the Ridout and Campbell families announce the passing of Sarah 'Sally' Ellen Campbell, age 71, on March 3, 2016 at the Cove Guest Home, Sydney. Truly blessed, Sally was surrounded by her daughters, family and the many caregivers who loved and cared for her. She is survived by and will be lovingly remembered by her daughters Carol (David) Boutilier, Corinne (Chad) Gracie and Cheryl (Frank) Rubia, as well as her five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; brothers, Fred (Barb) Campbell, William (Harriett) Campbell; sister Claudia (Robert) Buchanan and her best friend/cousin Judy Campbell. Sally was predeceased by her infant daughter Cathy and parents, Josiah and Annie Campbell. She was very creative at knitting, painting and gardening, which she won many awards. She was a talented singer and loved karaoke. Now she’s singing with the angels. Following her wishes, there will be no visitation. A Celebration of Life and interment at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens will be announced at a later date.
