Cheryl 'Bobbi' Edwards age 69, passed away in Sydney at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital on Saturday, Feb. 20, 2016, surrounded by love and holding the hands of her children. Born in Sydney, Aug. 17, 1946, Bobbi was one of 16 children born to Margaret (O’Neil) and Walter Henick. She worked all her life as a hair stylist and at the age of 61 our adventurous mother took a civilian job supporting our troops on the Kandahar base in Afghanistan. From there she experienced many parts of the world and returned to Cape Breton to open her home and heart to foreign students. Left to mourn are her four children, Kelley, Albert ‘Puds’ (Judy), Tonya, and Tara (Will MacDonald), as well as her grandchildren, Courtney Johnston, Robyn Edwards, Roy-Jordan Dinham, Justin and Hannah Pearo and Jaiwei Liu. Her loss is also deeply felt by her companion, Charlie Livingstone and her many ‘international children’ who shared her home and love, Sofia Almanza, Thomas Onizuka, Mused (Sebastian) Manjon, Yuto Kobayashi and JeeSung (Tommy) Park. She is survived by 14 siblings, Donna Gabriel (Ron), Jenny McCarthy (Pat Riley), Judy Boudreau (Wayne), Liz Melski, Walter, Shaun, Greg, Mike (Delores), Kevin, Valerie MacLeod (Dave), Barbara (Paul Floyd), Robert, Ronnie (Wanda) and Glen (Kim) and her 36 nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her father, Walter; sister, Verna; in-laws, Ronald (Butch) Melski and Brenda Costigan; her nephew, Connor Mclellan and beloved family dog, Chekhov. She was fiercely proud of her children who were the focus of her life. Her kindness and humour will be greatly missed by the very many who knew and loved her. Bobbi was a firecracker, a fiercely independent spirit, and despite hard times she persevered and had a light and happiness that could not be surpassed. She was taken too soon. Funeral arrangements are being handled by S.W. Chant and Son Funeral Home at 564 Alexandra St, with visitation on Friday, Feb. 26th from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral mass will be held at Holy Redeemer Church on Victoria Road on Saturday, Feb. 27 at 10 a.m., followed by a reception to celebrate her life at the Polish Village Hall. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to help a refugee family. Bobbi’s time in Afghanistan made her very sympathetic to the ordeal of those affected by the war. Verne Marie Beaton Born: February 17th, 1938 Passed in: New Waterford Passed on: February 22nd, 2016 It is with heavy hearts that we, the family of Verne Marie Beaton, announce her passing on Feb. 22, 2016 at home, surrounded by her loving family. Born on Feb. 17, 1938, she was the daughter of the late Patrick and Bertha (Winstanley) Maddin. Verne’s career began at the Sydney Naval Base, New Waterford Consolidated Hospital and she retired as long-standing secretary from Central and St. Agnes elementary schools. Verne was most content and happiest at home with her family. After she retired, she enjoyed travelling with family. She was a keen card player and will be missed by her club members, Lorraine, Verna, Ann and Joanne. Her greatest life accomplishment was that of wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. She taught her children by example, strong values, importance of family, faith, hard work, kindness, tolerance, generosity, forgiveness and love. Verne is survived by her daughters, Donna (David) Simms, Valerie (John) Williams, Marlene Beaton and son, Donnie (Wendy) Beaton; sister, Patricia Cooke, Medicine Hat; grandchildren, Danielle (Robert) Boudreau, Haley (Tyler) Reginato, Hilary and Laurel Williams, Tylor (Shaylin) White, Jared Beaton, Cole MacNeil; great-granddaughters, Layton, Faye; chosen grandson, Jonathan MacLeod and best friend, Joanne MacQueen, as well as many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by the love of her life, husband Donnie in 2004; brother, Sam Maddin and granddaughter, Jennifer Williams. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Verne’s life will be held on Feb. 24, 2016 at 10 a.m. in the Parish of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating, followed by a luncheon in the parish hall Convent Street, all are welcome. Interment in Mount Carmel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the palliative care or Children’s Wish Foundation. “If a woman’s life is measured by the love for her family and theirs for her, Verne’s life was immeasurable. “ Carol Noel Colello Born In: Sydney Born: December 22nd, 1955 Passed on: February 20th, 2016 The family of Carol Noel Colello regret to announce the passing of our beloved daughter, sister and aunt on Feb. 20, 2016. Born in Sydney on Dec. 22, 1955, she was the daughter of Lillian and the late Nicholas Colello of Westmount. She was also a longtime resident of Whitney Pier. Carol was the kindest, most thoughtful and selfless person you could ever meet. Her love for her family and friends was only rivalled by her love of sports. She never missed a Cape Breton Oilers game and loved to cheer on the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles, Toronto Blue Jays and Montreal Canadiens. She was an accomplished bowler and competed regularly in Special Olympics. Carol is survived by her mother, Lillian; sisters, Gina and Kim (Michael) MacGarvie, Westmount; brother, Nick, Westmount; nephew T.J. (Natalie), Sydney; niece, Jessica, Westmount; and grand-nephews, Gabriel and Nolan. She also had a special place in her heart for her uncle, Henry (Rick) Guerra, Laval, Que., and his family, as well as the staff members of the former Italian Village Pizzeria. Carol was predeceased by her father, Nick, who is now by her side forever. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. Hazel Helen Herney Born In: Sydney Passed in: Sydney Passed on: February 21st, 2016 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of a loving mother, sister, grandmother and friend, Hazel Helen Herney of Eskasoni, who passed away peacefully on Sunday, Feb. 21, 2015 in the Palliative Care Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, at the age of 68. Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Simon and Ann P. (Denny) Cremo. Hazel loved driving and cruising around Cape Breton and making her yearly pilgrimages to St. Anne de Beaupre and Chapel Island Mission. She also worked as a medical driver for 17 years along with receptionist for Drs. Virick and Jody Kingston. She is survived by one daughter, Melinda (Mrs. Marcus Simon); four grandchildren, Julianna (Louis), Keeley, Keyanna and Kellee; three great-granddaughters, Carley, Cameryn and Carmen and a brother, Cyril Matthew Cremo. Also surviving are godchildren, Darren, Kirk, Stanley, Patrick, Jean, Glynis, Layla, Nancy Mae, Sherman, Clifford, Leta and Elizabeth, many nieces and nephews; best friends, Kat, Nora, Annie and Baby and special friends, Auriel, Payson, Jacob, Cady and John ‘Ding’. She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas Noel; a sister, Mary Josephine; nine brothers, John G., Lee Harvey, Simon Peter, Noel, Leo Joseph, Clifford A., Peter Joseph, Michael Joseph and Clifford Joseph and godchild, John Herney. Mary Ellen 'Nellie' Acker Born In: New Waterford Passed in: Glace Bay Passed on: February 22nd, 2016 The family are saddened to announce the passing of Mary Acker, age 99 of Seaview Manor, Glace Bay on Monday, Feb. 22, 2016 at the Glace Bay Hospital. Born in New Waterford, she was the daughter of the late William and Mary Ellen (Madden) Burns. Mary was a devout catholic and member of the former, St. Leo’s Church, Stirling. She loved life and lived it to the fullest. Mary also loved her family dearly. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Mary is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth 'Betty' Campbell, Glace Bay, Margaret (Wally) Blanchard, P.E.I., one son, Bill (Beverly) Acker, Halifax, nine grandchildren, many great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Mary was predeceased by her husband, George Acker, a daughter, Georgetta, Ontario and her siblings. Visitation will be held Wednesday evening from 6-8 pm in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral mass, officiated by Fr. Norman MacPhee is Thursday 10 a.m. in St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay followed by a reception in the church foyer. Interment in the parish cemetery at a later date. No flowers please.
