Born in St. John’s, N.L., on Dec. 10, 1922, Carrie was the eldest child of the late Eli and Mary (Lush) Head. Carrie was a member of the Salvation Army, Sydney. Until her admittance to hospital, Carrie was a very active member of her community, still driving her car, living independently in her home and doing the things she loved: reading, quilting, crocheting, baking, preserving, attending Home League and visiting with her friends and family, who meant so very much to her. She will be missed by all who knew her. Carrie is survived by her daughter, Irene (Brian) Rush, Charlottetown, P.E.I.; sons, Edward (Ann), New Waterford and Robert ‘Robie’, Sydney; grandchildren, Jennifer, Charlottetown, P.E.I., Michael Rush, Fort McMurray, AB, Wendy (Todd) McSavaney and Janice (Jason McKinnon), both from New Waterford and great-grandchildren, Rileigh, Vancouver, B.C., Taylor and Morgan Rush, both from Charlottetown, P.E.I., Ceilidh, Brooks, Alberta, Holly and Ryan McSavaney, Alex, Sarah and Theo Thorne, all from New Waterford. She is also survived by three sisters, Nita (the late Paul) Taylor, Frostproof, Florida, Rebecca 'Beck' (Wilson) Hamlyn, Mt. Thom and Linda (the late Major Harry) Zimmerman, New Castle, Ont.; three brothers, Wallace (Loretta ‘Etta’) and Tom (the late Rose), both from New Waterford, and George (Wendy), Abercrombie; brother-in-law, Frank Grant, Pictou; as well as many nieces and nephews. Carrie was predeceased by her husband, Edward Sterling Thorne, Sept. 23, 2000, and seven sisters, Letty Pearl and twins, Mary and Beatrice, all in infancy, Annie and her husband, Gordon Davis, Hilda, Pearl Grant and Dorothy ‘Dot’ and her husband, Kitchener ‘Kitch’ Golding. Visitation for the late Mrs. Carrie Thorne will be held at the Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street) on Tuesday, March 15, 2016 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service to celebrate the life of Carrie will take place on Wednesday, Mar. 16 at 11 a.m. in The Salvation Army Sydney Community Church, Sydney, with Major Kent and Dena Hepditch officiating. Following the service a reception will be held in the church hall. Interment will take place in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney, at a later date. Bertha Anna (Capstick) Kanarie Born In: Capstick Victoria County Born: August 7th, 1925 Passed in: Capstick Passed on: March 12th, 2016 We, the family of Bertha Kanarie, 90, are saddened to announce her sudden passing on Saturday, March 12, 2016, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Capstick, Victoria County, on Sept. 7, 1925, she was the daughter of the late W.J. Duncan and Margaret M. (MacDonald) Capstick. A graduate of Normal College in Truro, she taught for 30 years in various schools in Northern Victoria County. She was active in St. Margaret’s Parish and her community. She is survived by her son Ronald, Capstick, and daughter Pauline (Albert) Zwicker, Prime Brook; granddaughter Dr. Deborah Zwicker (Todd Clements) and great-grandson Alexander Clements. Also left to mourn are her brother Ernest (Marie) Capstick, Capstick, and many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Joseph Kanarie, and brothers Ronald, Dan R., and Duncan B. Capstick. Visitation for Bertha Kanarie will be held on Tuesday, March 15, 2016, from 12-2 p.m. in St. Margaret’s Church, St. Margaret’s Village, followed by a funeral mass celebrating her life at 2 p.m. with Fr. Lazarus Guira officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery, at a later date. Jessie Theresa MacIntyre Born In: Glace Bay Passed in: Glace Bay Passed on: March 11th, 2016 It is with sadness we announce the passing of a wonderful lady. Jessie MacIntyre, formerly of Cottage Street, Glace Bay passed away at Taigh Na Mara Nursing Home on Friday, March 11, 2016. Jessie was a resident of Taigh Na Mara for several years. Born in Glace Bay, Jessie was the daughter of the late Roderick and Sadie (McInnis) MacIntyre. Jessie was a long time member of St. Anne's Church. She was a well respected school teacher having taught at St. John's School retiring after many memorable years. She was a very caring and loving person. She was thought of as a second mother to Bernadette Gilmet and her children, Denise, Leigh Ann and Bernie. Jessie will be sadly missed by her sister, Sister Mary MacIntyre, Caritas Residence, Halifax. Besides her parents, Jessie was predeceased by her sisters, twin, Betty and Bernice. There will be no visitation for Jessie. Cremation has taken place under the care and guidance of Curry's Glace Bay Funeral Home, 775 Main St. A funeral mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. on Thursday, March 17, 2016 at St. Anne's Church, Glace Bay with Fr. Christina Mary Hurley Born In: New Waterford Passed in: New Waterford Passed on: March 11th, 2016 It is with heavy hearts that we, the family, announce the passing of Christina Mary Hurley on Friday, March 11, 2016 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Born in New Waterford, she was the daughter of the late James and Margaret (Smith) Hannah. Christina loved to cook. She worked at the Maple Hill Manor and the Braemore Home and also was a member of the Pensioners Club and Victoria Mines Community Center. She was survived by her husband, James; sons Blaise, California and Ryan (James), Calgary; brother Walter (Ruth), Winnipeg. Besides her parents, Christina was predeceased by her sister, Joan Meers and nephew Jimmy Meers. Cremation has taken place. A chapel service will be held on Tuesday, March 15, 2016 at 3 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Carol Gillard officiating followed by a luncheon at the Army, Navy and Airforce, Smith Street. James Harold 'Hal' Dorrington Passed in: Truro, Canada Passed on: March 10th, 2016 James Harold 'Hal' Dorrington, 83, passed away peacefully March 10, 2016 in the Mira Long Term Care Centre, Truro. Hal, as he was known by everyone, was a man of God and loved his Lord. He was ordained a minister of St. Phillip’s African Orthodox Church, Sydney and was a member of Zion Baptist Church, Truro where he was part of the Men's Brotherhood. Hal enjoyed music and loved to sing. One of Hal's proud moments was when he was a member of the Zion Baptist Church Quartet and represented Nova Scotia in our Nation’s Capital on Parliament Hill as part of the Canada Day Festivities hosted by Alex Trebek. Hal was best known around the town of Truro for his gift of music accompanied by his trusted guitar. An avid fisherman, Hal enjoyed fishing the brooks of Nova Scotia. It was there that he found his peace and enjoyment. Throughout his life, Hal was employed with the Sydney Coke Ovens and was a Chef at the former Keddys Inn, Truro and later on as a building Superintendent. Hal was always willing to help whenever he could, often providing drives for those who had no other mode of travel. Hal was a beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend and he will be missed by all who knew him. Hal leaves behind siblings, Henrietta Hines (Et), Betty Tynes (Bet), Osbin Paris (Honky), all of Truro, Arthur Dorrington (Art), New Jersey, Yvonne Spencer (Vonnie), Peggy Este, Gladys Innis and Arden Innis, all Ontario. Children of his immediate family, William Dorrington (Billy), PEI, James Dorrington (Jim), Nunavut, Tracey Dorrington-Skinner, Truro, Lizette Dorrington (Denise), Krista Borden, British Columbia and Kim Tynes, Halifax; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews. Hal was predeceased by the parents who raised him, William and Mabel Dorrington, mother, Marion (Pratt), wife, Dorothy, sister, Emily, brother, Murray Frederick Horace (Diddle) and Douglas. The family would like to thank the staff of the Mira Long Term Care Centre for their exceptional care and support to Hal. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 16 from 1p.m. until time of memorial service at 2 p.m. all in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro.
