Born June 17, 1941, in New Glasgow, he was a son of the late Ernest and Dorothy (Holloway) Wadden. Growing up in the small town of Abercrombie, Darryl enjoyed life in the country along with his closest friends - his siblings and cousins - after which, he moved to Westmount at age 12. As a teenager and young adult, hockey was Darryl's passion, where he played defence for Westmount teams at all levels growing up. Darryl retired from Sydney Steel, where he worked in the general office and was a rail inspector. Darryl formed many lifelong friendships during his time at Sydney Steel. After receiving his first pay cheque in 1961, Darryl walked into McKnight's Music Store on Charlotte Street and purchased a Gibson J45 acoustic guitar, which he played right up until his final days. Darryl played many shows around Sydney with his band, the Four Yachtsmen, in the 1960s and 70s. Throughout the 1980s and 90s, Darryl recorded a large selection of albums, many of which featured country and Cape Breton themes. Thousands of his albums were purchased at the Red Barn Gift Shop in Baddeck, by tourists from across North America and the rest of the world. Even in his later years, Darryl was young at heart and kept active. He continued playing music, loved playing XBox, was active in softball, attended many dances, frequently sang at the Sydney Boardwalk and performed karaoke throughout Sydney. In addition to his many friends in Westmount and surrounding areas, Darryl developed many close friendships in Membertou and within the Filipino community in Sydney in his later years, often forged by a shared love of music. In his final months, Darryl could not say enough amazing things about the staff of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, who did wonders for his physical and emotional well-being. Darryl was a member of Westmount United Church. Darryl is survived by his son, Brent (Michelle Morrison), Sydney and brother, Donald (Dollores), Port Hope, Ont. Besides his parents, Darryl was predeceased by his sister, Dottie Ponee.
